Western Alberta Transmission Line Application
Notice of rescheduled public hearing and community hearing session locations
The process to consider the AltaLink Management Ltd. application requesting approval to
construct and operate the Western Alberta Transmission Line, briefly described below, has now
resumed. The process began in January 2011 when the Alberta Utilities Commission (AUC)
launched an enhanced process, but was suspended at the request of the Minister of Energy. The
Minister requested the AUC resume its consideration of the application and the Commission has
now resumed the process.
The public hearing to consider the Western Alberta Transmission Line application will
commence at 9 a.m. on June 11, 2012, at the Holiday Inn on 67 Street, Winspear room,
6500 67 Street, Red Deer, Alberta.
The AUC requests that anyone who intends to participate in this proceeding and has not
already done so, submit the information outlined below, before April 16, 2012. Please
clearly state Proceeding ID No. 1045 on your submission.
Brief description of the proposed Western Alberta Transmission Line:
The project consists of four main components:
Construction of a 500-kilovolt (kV) alternating current (AC)/500-kV direct current (DC)
Sunnybrook 510S substation, which would contain the north converter station, to be
located in the southwest quarter of Section 36, Township 50, Range 3, west of the Fifth
Meridian and in the northwest quarter of Section 25, Township 50, Range 3, west of the
Fifth Meridian.
Construction of a 240-kV AC/500-kV DC Crossings 511S substation, which would
contain the south converter station, to be located in the northwest quarter of Section 16,
Township 23, Range 27, west of the Fourth Meridian.
Construction of approximately 347 kilometres of 500-kV DC transmission line 1325L
connecting the proposed Sunnybrook 510S substation to the proposed Crossings 511S
substation.
Construction of a 500-kV AC Bennett 520S substation to be located in the southwest
quarter of Section 16, Township 23, Range 27, west of the Fourth Meridian. The Bennett
520S substation will only be required if the AUC approves AltaLink’s preferred route for
the transmission line.
A detailed description of the Western Alberta Transmission Line project is set out in the
application available from the electronic filing services on the AUC website (www.auc.ab.ca).
Hard copies of AltaLink’s application are also available for viewing at the local libraries in the
