Kia ora koutou

Welcome everyone to the 2015 Annual General Meeting of the Western Community Centre. It is my pleasure to present to you my Chairpersons’ report.

On behalf of the WCA Board I would like to extend my utmost gratitude to Neil, our staff and our many volunteers for their continuing hard work and contribution to our community events held daily and annually. For ensuring that the Centre is well resourced and that the community is kept informed of all events and changes that may affect or impact on them or their families. Thank you also, to our Hamilton City Council team, Ioana and Ani, for their hard work throughout the year. As always you are highly considered as part of our Centre family.

To our many funders who constantly recognise and appreciate the work that is completed on a regular daily basis, if it was not for you our Centre would certainly be placed in a more vulnerable environment where service delivery and reaching our most vulnerable would be hugely compromised. This funding can be attributed to the condition of the building, the services we provide and the way Centre Staff manage their community asset. We as a Board would personally like to acknowledge each and every funder for their continued financial support of the Centre.

Again this year our financial report is in good order however I will acknowledge our very small deficit this can be off set by our 15 month financial year ending 2014. I am confident that this can be recovered during this next financial year. Our budgets are set, and our cash flow is managed very well with the assistance of our finance team, accountant and auditors.

I would like to advise you of the Boards intention to plan an extension to the existing building to accommodate the ever growing demand for venue hire and sports venue on this side of Hamilton West. This will require funders that specifically fund building projects including philanthropic donations. This shall include electing a building committee which will be assigned by the WCA Board for this purpose. If you are interested in assisting the coordination of this project we would love to hear from you.

As you will notice the Centre is now semi solar powered this will absolutely reduce our energy cost and self sustain itself in years to come, an overall worthwhile investment. Thank you to Lion Foundation and the Wel Energy Trust.

To Hamilton City Council that allows us to retain our autonomy and which continues to recognise our efforts portrayed toward the West Community. Our partnership will always be important and remain incredibly valuable to the future existence of our Centre.

In closing, I’d like to thank you Neil for your management ethics and passion for the position you hold in this community. To the WCA Board who tirelessly give their time voluntarily to make the West an awesome place to reside and raise their children openly and freely.

I too am dedicated to the community as a whole and will always place the betterment of others before me in order to provide a safe and vibrant environment for all to enjoy. I wish everyone the best for the coming year.

Another great year of Community development and community engagement.

It has been a really exciting year at the centre! The hard work our board/staff and volunteers have put in over many years is really coming to fruition and we are seeing significant positive results. There has been an ever increasing number of days where we run out of space because of the high level of community involvement.

This year we have seen the development of at least 10 brand new initiatives and projects that are now available to our community and the wider Hamilton area. These have been inspired and developed from community members who have come through our doors with an idea.

It is very rewarding to see the community use and access their centre through the many events, programmes, activities, support services, educational and social gatherings that take place each week.

To our funders and supporters, Thank you for partnering with us financially to provide the services and programmes that we strongly believe are making a real positive difference in this community. Thank you to the Hamilton City Council for continuing to support the centre through it’s Multi-Year Community grant allocation. For over 3 decades the Hamilton City Council has invested, partnered and supported us as we continue to do what we do.

To our chairperson and board, Thank you to Jamie Toko who has been a tremendous support to myself and the centre over many years. Jamie gives the centre countless hours being available as Chairperson and through her work as a Justice of the Peace. Your support to me in my role is really appreciated!

Thank you to each board member for their support, encouragement, advice and guidance throughout the year. I have enjoyed working with you all and appreciate that you are all 100% behind our vision. Thank you for the time you take out of your busy lives to support the centre and community.

To our staff and volunteers, Thank you for your commitment and dedication to helping make our part of Hamilton a great place for our families. Thank you for for making the centre a fun and rewarding place to work in and for supporting me in my role.

Throughout the year we have an amazing team of over 250 volunteers who assist the centre in a wide range of roles. We couldn’t do what we do without them!

Amazing projects and accomplishments and we are now powered by Ra.

Looking back on my report to the AGM it’s amazing the projects and accomplishments the Centre has achieved in what feels like such a short space of time. We're now being partially powered by Ra, thanks in part to Maui for slowing the sun down way back, and WEL Energy Trust & The Lion Foundation for funding our amazing solar array. It was awesome to help get this underway and I look forward to seeing the project shine and save the Centre heaps on their power bill, whilst bringing solar into the community for the first time.

One thing all that extra juice will be good for is powering our new computer suite. Thanks to Computers in Homes, and special thanks to Holly Snape, the Centre has a suite of computers which can be made available to the public including training opportunities using supplied self-training programs which come with the computers so people can learn at their own pace anything from CV creation to using TradeMe or Photoshop. It's all about choices, and bridging that digital divide, giving people confidence and autonomous learning.

Along with solar, our push towards a more sustainable centre, both fiscally and environmentally has seen our adoption of Para Kore, a program designed to move marae and organisations towards zero waste. We've installed pig bins, got the worm farm running, split up our recycling better and are really making sure we know where everything goes, as well as teaching all the moko running around about it! And the oldies too! One unexpected bonus is we've started to overflow with worms! As such we've been able to help other people start their own worm farms by providing starter worms cheaply along with some free advice. Squirmingly good!

The Western Community News has been delivered on time and to glowing reviews from the community. We love getting feedback on the best newspaper in the world so keep it coming. And if you have stories or ads let us know!

It's been hard being away while on secondment from the Centre and its great to be back in Nawton. ICAN!

If you have the power to make someone happy, do it!

Another year is now history, but at the same time, I can also say that my mind is full of so many successful memories and stories… that will be with me for the rest of my life. The year started with a huge bang’ - Celebrating NZ’s National "Children’s Day Event" 2015, which was a great success. The ‘highlight' for me was seeing all our YOUTH attend and assist with all the water slides, entertainment, food stalls and the supervision of all the children that attended and assisting with all the whanau where ever needed. This showed a great sense of commitment from the students to us (Western Community - Nawton) as they showed that they were ‘keen’ to give up their ‘free’ time in their school holidays to do this - So a big thanks goes to all of them!

This pretty much sets the scene/tone for the year to come… and now looking at where we are - October 2015, this can also be a great example of how far we have come this year, to date.

Other events included, Inflatables in the Park and Chill in the Park which were also great successes and we are now building up to our biggest annual event of the year, Treats in the Park - 2015. This will be its 14th year running, so this is definitely a huge successful event that the community, schools, whanau and children have ‘automatically’ added to each ones calendar every year!!!

Another part to all our events having been so successful is having over 200 youth/volunteers, contributing to this awesome community. We could not have done this without the many helpers not only out front/in the open but also the ones behind the scenes, the cooks, the cleaners, the fundraisers/funders, our vibrant mix of wisdom on our BOARD of trustees. Thanks you all, and also the cool, Western Community staff - THANKS for all your guys support and assistance over the past year, and I look forward to another ‘wicked’ year ahead (obviously after a hard earned holiday/summer break)… lol - (laugh out loud)

My final THANKS goes out to all our funders/sponsors that support us in any way possible and also to my funder, The TODD Foundation.

My final WORDS go out to ALL the people doing some ‘good’ in our communities. "If you have the power to make someone happy, do it. The world needs more of that” - kushandwizdom!

Thanks for sharing, listening and been a part of the Western Community.

How may I help you?

As you walk through our doors you will find that no two days are ever the same here. It matters not why you have entered in, but the fact that you are now here lets see what we can do for you.

Hi my name is Aileen welcome to my world and how may I help you? Classic opening lines yes but the reality of the needs of the people surface in all the areas imaginable …

The important fact to mention is that we multi task in most of our areas of responsibility be it 50+ events and services, venue hire or table and chairs, leaner licence courses, playgroup programmes, mentoring in our minglers of craft group it also involves community projects, community hours, volunteering in any of these areas mentioned and aid requests concerning all ages and circumstances.

Our successes evolve daily when our people are relieved of their pressures and walk out with their heads now held up…

A YEAR OF CONSOLIDATION This was our first standard financial year the last year being a 15 month ‘year.’ I am pleased to report an unqualified audit certificate from our auditor.

The Auditor, in his examination, checked our money handling and basic accounting and operating procedures to be satisfied that they are robust, minimising the chances of error. This was followed up by a comprehensive sampling of our transactions. Had we followed our own procedures, was our data entry correct, had the appropriate checks and approvals for payments been signed off, were bills, especially GST and Income Tax, paid on time, were all documents properly filed. These were just some of the matters we needed to prove to the auditor.

In the auditor’s letter to the Board, suggestions were made to further improve our practices. Thank you Mark. This will be important as beginning next year a new reporting regime is to come into force. During the year finance staff attended training sessions in the use of Xero and are now much more comfortable using the programme. It is now easier to produce comprehensive reports for the Manager and Board.

As always funding is an issue. Annual operating budgets are put together with no certainty as to what funding we will receive, when and from whom. The trend over recent years has been for smaller amounts to be granted and for fewer grantors to be in the market.

Our Accountant, Phil, is working with us to arrive at a position where we can create the annual financial statements directly from Xero. To be able to do this will be a significant advance. As always Phil has been a great mentor and guide - thank you Phil. Vicky Zhang/James Shepherd Financial Administrators

Privileged to work with funders The past 12 months have seen an increase in events and services provided by the Centre to the West Hamilton community and beyond. This increase has been assisted by our very supportive funders who show their faith in the Centre and acknowledge the valuable contribution made to the well being of our community. This financial assistance is also acknowledged by the people of West Hamilton. It is with respect and pleasure that I am privileged to work with and alongside the many funders we have who support us and the Western Community Association, the community and myself. Thank you and appreciate your generosity. Thank you.

We were able to say a special thanks to acknowledge the commitment and dedication of some of our Holiday Programme team this year.

Trish terry

making memories that will last a lifetime We've had quite a full on time this past year with participants coming and going. Our last programme was our biggest of the year with families still requesting spots. Some staff have had the opportunity to upskill in their roles by participating in a variety of courses designed to improve personal development.

We have recently had a number of our former participants from the programme come into young leadership roles/volunteer positions which is great to see them excel in these areas. On that note I would just like to thank all of our amazing volunteers who help make our job easier, their assistance and dedication is always greatly appreciated.

Hey guys! We are two occupational therapy students who worked with the awesome team at Western Community Centre to bring something pretty amazing to the Nawton community! We brought together a concept that promotes a

sense of pride, satisfaction, dignity and honour to the place we all call home. How awesome is that?

How this all started was from our very own inspirational and passionate member of the community, who also has an active role maintaining the Nawton Shopping Centre, Daryll MacAlpine - created Nawton’s first and

very own slogan ‘I. C. A. N’ I care about Nawton.

We knew we just had to have everyone see this! So we gathered volunteers from Crawshaw School and Fraser High School to design a logo which they felt best represented their place they call home.

We had some awesome designs from the group – but there could only be one. The voting was casted and the final design was chosen!

This is your community, your logo, your message and your pride, spread the word and help ‘Care About Nawton’!
