1 Fall 2008 Ambiance FALL 2008 EDITION record crowd of 635 guests bashed all marks for the 12th Annual Western Days – The Driller’s Bash. Ann Shannon Cassidy, the Event Chair, set an aggressive goal of $350,000 in net proceeds and the goal was achieved, besting last year’s record amount by over $22,000! “King Wildcatter” Underwriting Sponsors Joan Flint and the Ralph and Frances McGill Foundation and the “Wildcatter” Underwriting Sponsors Broadhurst Foundation, John Cassidy, Jr., Phyllis and George Dotson, Peggy and Charles Stephenson and Kathleen Williams helped to ensure the event was a success. The generous support of the sponsors and donors will allow the Home to purchase a new wheelchair accessible van along with new bathing spa tubs and much needed medical equipment and other services and modifications to improve the quality of care for each of the Home’s 175 Residents. The new venue of Central Park Hall at EXPO Square received rave reviews as well as the food prepared and served by EXPOSERVE which included a 9 oz. cushion cut choice sirloin donated by Morrison Senior Dining. The Rev. Irv Cutter, Rector, St. John’s Episcopal Church, was the emcee and did an outstanding job keeping the guests engaged along with Tommy Williams, volunteer auctioneer and long-time supporter of the Home. Sheri Colpitt, Decorations Chair, had the 30,000 sq ft event area looking like an oil patch dressed and ready for a party. The 125 item Silent Auction, Bidders’ Board and Live Auction display areas were masterfully done with the leadership and hard work of Judy Lawson, Silent Auction Setup Chair, and, Karen Abney, Sara Dale and Ann Radford who were the Bidders’ Board and Live Auction display committee members. Jimmy Stanhope, husband of Karen Stanhope, Admission’s Director for the Home, built two 16 ft tall oil derricks and an 8 ft tall derrick. His derricks and others were lighted and spaced around the venue to create that special oil patch feel. Antique oil related toy model cars, trucks and signs on loan from Malcolm Deisenroth along with large vintage oil company signs on loan from Ron Woodward were also a big part of the oil patch décor. The General Store featuring homemade baked goods donated by the Home’s staff; Yo-Yo dolls sewn by Residents Marie Millar, Greta Heslet and Velma Austin; and, dish cloths crocheted by Marie Millar generated more than $2,000 towards the goal. Will Farrior, Chairman of Saint Simeon’s Episcopal Home Board of Trustees, recognized the Flint Family who served as Honorary Chairs. Joan Flint, the late Bill Flint, along with their children Robin Ballenger, Patty Flint, Susan “Boofy” Seay and Charles Flint were recognized for their over 35 years of active support. Patty, a Resident of the Home, joyfully announced to the crowd, “I love Saint Simeon’s!” Prior to the start of an incredible ten-item Live Auction, Lindsay Hurley Fick, President and CEO of the Home, introduced a new video that highlighted the Home’s seven Values - Integrity, Dedication, Compassion, Accountability, Humility, Respect and Patience. The video noted the Home’s rich 48 year history and exciting progress on the current $22MM Assisted Living and Wellness Centers building project, set to open June 1, 2009. The Live Auction generated a lot of friendly, competitive bidding. Baseball is not my game but when thinking about the effort of the Saint Simeon’semployees for Western Days 2008, “stepping up to the plate” immediately came to mind.A large number of the Home’s employees donated homemade cakes, pies, cookies, cinnamon rolls, breads and more to the General Store. Guests were able to purchase thesehomemade items to take home and enjoy. The employees’ General Store was a hugesuccess again this year generating $2,164 … the first time ever over the $2,000 mark!

Every penny was needed to help us reach our overall Western Days goal of $350,000in net proceeds … a $22,000 increase from last year. A special thank you to Denise Fackfrom the maintenance department for the incredible number of hours (her own) she putsinto organizing, baking items and operating the General Store effort!

The Trustees of the Saint Simeon’s Foundation and I thank you for helping usimprove the quality of life for each of our 175 Residents. The Residents are blessed tohave you in their life. And we are blessed to have the Residents in our lives.

In 2008 Saint Simeon’s had to search for a new venue for ourannual Western Days event which for the past 11 years was held atthe Home. It was a bitter sweet decision to move off propertywhen the new construction replaced the parking lot where ourbig-top tent was formerly set up. We were thrilled that our eventhad grown to over 635 people in attendance! We were excitedabout the possibilities for expanding our event in its new locationthe Central Park Hall at Expo Square. But it was sad to have out-grown the space available at the Home.

One of the unique aspects of having Western Days on theproperty was giving Residents the opportunity to observe thepreparations and decorating, as well as to attend the dinner, knowing they were just a short distance from home.

Anticipating the disappointment that Residents might feelbeing unable to attend Western Days at the Central Park Hall, theentire Western Days Committee agreed that the Residents shouldhave their own Pre-Western Days Party. Robin Ballenger, who is a family member, a Board member and along with her family anHonorary Co-Chair of Western Days, immediately offered tounderwrite the party!

The big Pre-Party was held before Western Days on September4th. All Residents were invited to join in the fun and excitementwhich began with the noon meal. Residents in all dining areas of theHome were treated to a special western-style menu which includedgrilled boneless ribs and chicken with all the fixing's prepared byDave Beale and the Morrison staff. George Harrington, AuxiliaryPresident; Bud Martin, Auxiliary Past-President; and Ron Fick, husband of Lindsay Fick, the Home’s President/CEO, all served as

guest “grill chefs.” Sheri Colpitt, Western Days Decorations Chair, decorated the tables with the same colorful linens, props and flowercenterpieces that would be used the night of “The Driller’s Bash.”

In addition after the wonderful meal,Special Events and Festivities were held in

the Common Room. All Residents, family members and friends

were invited to attend andenjoy Western Carnival

Games, an Old-FashionedCake Walk (with bakedgoods provided by theadministrative staff!), aSilent Auction, and aPhoto Booth.

A variety ofWestern-style horsd’oeuvres were enjoyedby the Residents along

with beverages, includ-ing sarsparilla! Special

musical entertainment was provided by Janet Rutland, who sang a variety of songs including some favorite “country” numbers. She was accompanied on the fiddle by her husband.

It was a wonderful afternoon - the food and the festivitieswere enjoyed by all the Residents, staff, family members andfriends in attendance. We want to extend our thanks to RobinBallenger for generously underwriting this event!

The Assisted Living ApartmentsConstruction of the new Assisted Living and Wellness

Centers is in full swing at Saint Simeon’s! The expansion projectwas designed by Matrix Architects Engineers Planners, Inc. andFlintco, Inc. is handling the construction with oversight byGeorge Dotson and the Home’s Building Committee. Our NextChapter: Building with Love! Capital Campaign Cabinet, co-chaired by Phyllis and George Dotson, successfully raised the$22MM needed for the expansion with the generous donations

from supporters of theHome.

If you have visited the Home lately you know things are reallychanging. The back parking lot is a distant memory replaced bymammoth construction equipment, enormous steel beams andconcrete footings and walls. The former Employee Courtyard isnow the site of the new Wellness Center andactivity pool. For Residents and employ-ees of the Home it has been a wonderful opportunity and aneducation to see the constructionprogress from the safety of ourenclosed walkways.

The Assisted Living Centerwill give Saint Simeon’s a total of60 assisted living apartments, as wellas new dining areas, bistro, library, and other active living areas.

Three apartment floorplans are being offered - Studio, Suite and One-Bedroom.

The new apartments will be equipped with many wonderful amenities including a personalized entry; granite countertops and designer finishes; a large private bathroom withwalk-in shower; and panoramic views of Tulsa and downtown, the Osage Hills or the courtyard. The Suite floorplan includes atea kitchen with compact refrigerator, microwave and pantry. The One-Bedroom floorplan features an apartment-size refrigera-tor, microwave and pantry; separate living and sleeping rooms;and a walk-in closet.

Last May we opened Model Apartments for the Studio and Suite floorplans on the campus near the front gate. This temporary structure had the very specific purpose of giving theconstruction team the opportunity to see the exact apartment layout and level of finish (paint colors, fixtures, floor coverings, wall coverings, etc.) before making the models available for view-ing. These models are now open to assist current Residents, as well as future residents make apartment selections.

Wellness CenterOne of the most exciting elements of the construction is

watching the new warm water activity pool take shape. Theenclosed walkway south of the Gazebo Courtyard has been theperfect vantage point to see the progress. It was fascinating towatch the surface material - called “shot-crete” - being applied bywhat seemed like a “pool army” working all day to methodicallyspray and smooth the surface. The entire pool area is now beingencased in the building that will become the Wellness Center.

The beautiful, indoor warm water pool will be the focal pointof the wonderful new Wellness Center. In addition to the pool, the Wellness Center will include the latest state of the art exerciseequipment designed for the aging user; as well as activity areas forexercise programs. A variety of wellness programs specificallydesigned to encourage Residents to become and stay physicallyactive will be offered.

The south end of the indoor pool area will have seating areasnext to a large window overlooking a beautiful courtyard. The sidearchways of the pool area will be decorated with colorful tilemosaics. All Residents of the Home will be encouraged to use theappropriate services available in the Wellness Center.

If you or someone you know is considering the need forassisted living services, we encourage you to visit our model apart-ments and our beautiful community. For information and toschedule a tour, contact our Admissions Director, Karen Stanhope,at (918) 794-1902 or [email protected].

Carla’s Corner – A Special TributeOn the first floor of the Assisted Living Center will be aninviting gathering area for Residents, which has been named

“Carla’s Corner” in tribute to Carla Stokesberry, SaintSimeon’s former Director of Nursing who passed

away in June. Carla was well-known forbaking delicious pies, which were

even included in past Western Dayslive auctions.

The following is an excerptfrom a letter written to Carla byGeorge Dotson, Capital Campaign

Co-Chair, on behalf of SaintSimeon’s that best expresses this tribute:“Your leadership of the nursing staff, atten-

tion to the many details of providing the best timelycare to our Residents and your committed interest and

care for all of us gave Saint Simeon’s a memorable level ofwarmth and care. Residents still tell us you made the difference intheir decisions to join and stay at Saint Simeon’s.

You’d think that building the new 72,000square foot Assisted Living and WellnessCenters would be enough construction for Saint Simeon’s. However the BuildingCommittee of the Home Board of Trusteeshas initiated another great improvement: a Guard House at the front entrance on Cincinnati.

The Guard House will sit behind the frontgates, in the location of the small islandbetween the entrance and exit lanes.Construction on the Guard House beganon October 6 with an anticipated comple-tion date of December 31, 2008. The firststage of construction, approximately fourweeks in duration, will cause the entrancelane and then the exit lane to be closed.During that time the lanes will be trenched

to install power lines to the Guard Housesite. During daylight hours there will be aflagman to assist in directing traffic ontothe one open lane.

Once complete the Guard House will havea guard on duty 24 hours each day to meetand greet visitors and employees. It will bewonderful to have a helpful, smiling faceto wave folks onto the property. Chancesare if you’re a regular at Saint Simeon’s, theguard will get to know you by name!

So, as we begin another construction project at Saint Simeon’s, please accept our advance apologies for the upcoming inconvenience. The end result however will surely be great.

More New Construction If you have already made a donation to help make the Our Next Chapterproject a reality, we thank you for helping us strive to make this a betterHome for the Residents. If you havenot yet taken the opportunity to be apart of this important “chapter” in theHome’s 48 year history, please knowyour support is needed and welcomed. Too often families wait until a crisis arises to consider assistedliving for a loved one. By the time a crisis situation occurs the sen-ior may be too frail to take advantage of all the benefits assistedliving has to offer. Many families will say they regret not movingtheir loved one sooner.

Here are some of the signs that indicate it is time to seriouslyconsider assisted living.

Difficulty with Daily Activities• Staying in the same room of the house• Inability to do laundry and housekeeping chores• Wearing the same clothing day after day• Forgetting personal hygiene - bathing less often• Skipping meals, not bothering to cook

Lack of Socialization• Loss of a spouse, relatives or long-time friend• Showing signs of depression - sleeping too much or crying• Loss of interest in activities once enjoyed• Losing contact with friends - becoming isolated

Medication Concerns• Not properly ordering medications from the pharmacy

• Failing to take medications or taking more than prescribed

Fearfulness• Feeling the neighborhood is no longer safe• Being overly dependent on family members• Fearing being alone at night

Memory Loss• Repetition of questions or statements• Frequently misplacing items• Forgetting to turn off the stove or oven

Safety Issues• Difficulty getting in and out of the bathtub• Clutter around the house that can cause fall risks• Stairs that can make falling more likely• Availability of nearby help in case of an emergency

For more information about the benefits of Assisted Living, contact Karen Stanhope of Saint Simeon’s at (918) 794-1202. Karen has worked with families dealing with this issue for over 20 years.

When is it Time to Consider Assisted Living?

Saint Simeon’s was honored with two “Circle of Excellence”Awards at the Annual NADONA (National Association Directorsof Nursing Administration/ LTC) Conference held in June inNashville, Tennessee. This award is given to Long Term Carecommunities that have zero deficiencies on their state surveys. Itwas given for Saint Simeon’s Memory Center and Health CareCenter for 2007-2008.

Since 1986, NADONA/LTC has been the leading advocateand educational organization for Directors of Nursing andRegistered Nurses in Long Term Care (LTC). NADONA/LTC wasfounded by dedicated LTC professionals, and their board oftrustees still consists of LTC professionals. Their goal is to providenurses with the tools needed for professional success in the dailychallenges of long term care.

The Circle of Excellence Award and the Home’s outstandingrecord on state surveys reflect the commitment of Saint Simeon’sentire nursing department to provide the best possible care to theResidents every day.

The Circle of Excellence

The blessings of Saint Simeon have comefrom so many, and often unexpected, places. WhenLiz Berry, who lives in Abilene, Texas, had readabout Carla Stokesberry’s death she not only sent a wonderful donation, but she also had awonderful idea for a tribute to Carla and a gift forthe Residents. Liz, who knits and crochets (and is a fan of Carla’s son-in-law's band - The FlamingLips!) made seven “lap-ghans” for Residents.

The Men of the AuxiliaryOver 130 Auxiliary members, guests and Residents attended

the Annual Spring Luncheon on April 22. This year’s luncheonmarked a milestone in Auxiliary history - two men served asLuncheon Chairmen! Bud Martin andGeorge Harrington did an outstandingjob from choosing the menu and book-ing the entertainment to creating thevery unique centerpieces - live Beta fishswimming in fish bowls on each table!

Lindsay Fick, President/CEO ofthe Home, welcomed the crowd andnoted the many services provided bythe Auxiliary especially, the acts ofkindness for Residents accomplished bythe Tree of Dreams. Stephen Mason,Foundation Executive Director, notedthe good work of the Auxiliary andexpressed appreciation for the $10,000pledge from the Auxiliary for the Capital Campaign for the AssistedLiving and Wellness Centers. He also recognized the members ofthe Campaign Cabinet who were present.

Bob Millspaugh, President of the Foundation Board,

announced that the Board of Trustees for the Home and theFoundation are donating $500 to the Resident Benevolent Fundin honor of Bud Martin in appreciation for his service as president

of the Auxiliary for the past year. JackWard, Auxiliary Past-President, noted a donation is being made from theAuxiliary to the “Friends of theAnimals Fund” in Bud’s honor. Jack also stated that the heart of theAuxiliary is the wonderful people who come to the Home to offer theirtime and talent to enrich the lives ofthe Residents.

The Auxiliary officers elected for2008-2009 are: President, GeorgeHarrington; Vice-President, JoAnnaNewman; Recording Secretary, JudyLawson; Corresponding Secretary,Brenda Haesloop; and Treasurer, BillHolly. It should be noted that with

the election this year, the Auxiliary has had men serving asPresident for three consecutive years - another milestone! Auxiliarymembership is most certainly not just for women anymore!

The Auxiliary–Our Wonderful Volunteers!

There are some very special unsung heroes of Saint Simeon’s - Dr.Paul Juen and his staff at Chimney Hill Veterinary Hospital. For the pasteleven years Dr. Juen has quietly been providing - at no charge to SaintSimeon’s - complete veterinary care for our beloved therapy dog, Simone.

Simone just celebrated her eleventh birthday and she has been asource of joy and companionship for the Residents and staff of SaintSimeon’s for her entire life. In order to let Dr. Juen and his staffknow how very much Saint Simeon’s appreciates the services theyprovide for Simone, a representative group went to Chimney HillsVeterinary Hospital to extend our personal thanks and to proclaimAugust 19th as “Dr. Juen and The Staff of Chimney HillsVeterinary Hospital Day” at Saint Simeon’s.

The Saint Simeon’s group making the presentation includedLindsay Fick, President/CEO; Chris Gruszeczki, Life EnrichmentDirector; Kathy Hinkle, Education Director and caretaker ofSimone; and Patty Flint, Resident and number one fan of Simone.Lindsay expressed thanks to Dr. Juen on behalf of the Home andread the “official proclamation.”

Dr. Juen noted that he became aware of Saint Simeon’s when hiswife, Madelyn, was doing her Occupational Therapy clinicals at theHome. She shared with him what she had observed about the won-derful care Residents received at Saint Simeon’s and that the Homehad a special Golden Retriever puppy, named Simone. Dr. Juenadmits he is “partial to Golden Retrievers,” and that donating theservices for Simone is “part of who we are” at Chimney HillsVeterinary Hospital.

When asked to describe Simone, Dr. Juen smiled and said, “Sheloves to be petted.” Those who know Simone would certainly agree!Having Dr. Juen and his staff provide their services has been a bless-ing for Simone and everyone who loves her, as well as a wonderfulin-kind donation for the Home. And he has generously agreed toextend this care to Simone’s successor - Simone II.

Whereas, Dr. Juen and The Staff of Chimney Hills Veterinary Hospital have been providing loving caring to Simone since 1997; and,

Whereas, Dr. Juen and The Staff of Chimney Hills Veterinary Hospital have provided veterinary services to Saint Simeon s Episcopal Home for eleven years at no charge; and

Whereas, Dr. Juen and The Staff of Chimney Hills Veterinary Hospital through their services have given the residents at Saint Simeon s the joy of having a healthy pet; and,

Whereas, Dr. Juen and The Staff of Chimney Hills Veterinary Hospital have provided the careneeded for Simone to live a long and productive life at Saint Simeon s Episcopal Home;

Now, therefore, I, Lindsay Hurley Fick, President/CEO of Saint Simeon s, do hereby proclaimAugust 19, 2008 as

Dr. Juen and The Staff of Chimney Hills Veterinary Hospital Day

One of the treasures at Saint Simeon’s is our beautiful campus- over fifty acres of land provide our “country setting” on a hilloverlooking downtown Tulsa. When visitors come through thegate to Saint Simeon’s for the first time they enter the wonderful, natural wooded grounds full of shade trees, manicured lawns, andflower beds overflowing with vibrant colors. We are always pleasedto hear the admiring comments about the beauty of our Home.

The “natural” beauty of our grounds is really theresult of some very hard work by our maintenancestaff along with the wonderful, dedicated volun-teers of the Auxiliary Landscape Committee. In addition, there is another group thatplays an important role in keepingthe Saint Simeon’s campus lookingso beautiful - the “A Team.” For thepast three years they have beenperforming many of the day today tasks of grounds keep-ing, such as watering, mowing, edging, andmulching. In the wintermonths they also assistthe maintenance staffwith indoor jobs.

The A Team is partof The Major Group, aprivate employment serv-ice for people with physi-cal and/or cognitive chal-lenges. The Major Groupoffers a variety of support-ive employment servicesfrom individual placements to“enclaves,” such as the A Team. Each enclave consists of a crew offive to six workers and a job coach. The team at Saint Simeon’s isone of three currently employed in the Tulsa area.

The Major Group contracts with individual businesses thathave work which aligns with the capabilities of the crew. The job

coach is an important component of the Major Group. Each jobcoach receives state training called Foundations, as well as CPRand First Aid training. The job coach for the Saint Simeon’s groupis Leslie Starks.

The members of the crew learn grounds keeping skills alongwith life skills, such as coming to a job daily, learning to workwith others, and receiving a pay check. Despite the challenges theyface each has the opportunity to become a contributor to society

and the community of Tulsa as a taxpay-er and consumer - it is a classic “win-

win” situation for the A Team andfor Saint Simeon’s.

The A Team has becomepart of the Saint Simeon’sfamily. They enjoy therecognition they receivefor the work they do andare quick to greet staffmembers and Residentswith a smile and friendlywave. Several of the mem-bers of the crew haveformed bonds withResidents. According toRobin Thompson,Executive Director of TheMajor Group, the motherof one young manbrought him out to SaintSimeon’s on his day off tovisit a Resident who had

become a friend.Lindsay Hurley Fick,

President/CEO states, “The beauty of Saint Simeon’s is reflectedthrough the talents and devotion of many people. The MajorGroup is a valuable resource for Saint Simeon’s and a wonderfulprogram for the Tulsa community.”

Special Help from a Special Group

May 30th was an exciting day at Saint Simeon’s as Residents, family members and friends gathered for “Homecoming 2008.”This was a special Open House held from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.at the Home’s main campus. The special guest speaker for the eventwas Saint Simeon’s Medical Director, Dr. Insung Kim, M.D.,F.A.C.P., Associate Professor of Medicine, Chief of Geriatrics atOU College of Medicine, Tulsa. Dr. Kim gave a very informativepresentation, “Aging Today: Meeting the Challenge,” which wasfollowed with a question and answer session for those attending.

This was a wonderful opportunity for friends and familymembers to see the exciting things happening atSaint Simeon’s. In addition to Dr. Kim’spresentation, tours of the Home and ournewly opened Model Apartments for thenew Assisted Living Expansion wereoffered. Visitors toured beautifully decorated models of the “Studio” and “Suite” apartments and were able to observe the actual construc-tion from the walkways inside theHome. Our wonderful Auxiliaryvolunteers were on hand to assistwith Walking Tours of the Homeusing the new Visitors’ Guide creat-ed by the Auxiliary to direct visitorsto all the points of interest inside andoutside the Home.

The Ice Cream Parlor was open for extended hours and guests wereable to enjoy delicious ice creamtreats all day. Special musical

entertainment and refreshments were provided throughout all the areas of the Home during the day. Memory Books from

past Days of Remembrance, Annual Scrapbooks of activities at the home, and photos going back to the Home’s foundingin 1960 were displayed in the Common Room. Lucky winners of the door prize drawings received gasoline gift cards.

The event was part of the exciting nationwide“Homecoming” celebration sponsored by the American

Association of Homes and Services for the Aging (AAHSA), of which Saint Simeon’s is a member. AAHSA helps millions of

individuals and their families every day through mission-driven,not-for-profit organizations, like Saint Simeon’s, that are dedicat-ed to providing the services that people need, when they needthem, in the place they call home.

One of the “crown jewels” of Saint Simeon’s is its volunteerorganization the Auxiliary. The Auxiliary has continually providedcommitted volunteers and enriched the lives of Residents since itsfounding in 1961.

One of its most active and dedicated groups the LandscapeCommittee was formed in 2003 at the suggestion of Auxiliarymember and Master Gardener, Jack Ward, whorecruited volunteers interested in helpingmake our grounds at Saint Simeon’smore beautiful. The LandscapeCommittee has been involved in muchof planning, designing and even theactual planting of the beautifulflower beds and containers seenthroughout the Home’s campus. After the ice storm last winterthe Landscape Committeemembers, several of whomare Master Gardeners, wereavailable to offer theirexpertise and suggestions inassessing the damage to thetrees on the property.

This spring after servingfor 5 years as the LandscapeCommittee Chair, Jack is pass-ing on the “chairman’s gavel.”Jack’s leadership and dedicationare greatly appreciated by theHome and all who visit ourbeautiful campus!

Now the Auxiliary wel-comes the new Co-Chairs ofthe Landscape Committee,Janet Williamson and Mary LouHavener, both of whom have beenactive members of the LandscapeCommittee. Meet them and as you readremember they are volunteers! What a blessingto Saint Simeons!

Janet WilliamsonI retired in 2004 after a career as a chemist (MS in

analytical chemistry from OSU). I worked inthe pharmacology department at the ORUmedical school doing DNA drug-bindingresearch, at Occidental Petroleum doingoil analyses and ended my career at anenvironmental lab doing GC/MSanalyses of volatile priority pollutantsin soil and water for both EPA andprivate clients.

I have always loved gardeningand the first thing I did after retir-ing was become a Master Gardener. It is great fun. We have programsin the schools ("Worms to theWise" is my favorite) and insenior living centers. We plantthe Habitat for Humanityhouses and have a speaker’sbureau with many gardeningtopics available on request.Great website:Tulsamastergardeners.org

It was from a MasterGardener mailing that I learnedSaint Simeons was looking for apart time "horticultural thera-pist." I had no specific creden-tials, as such, but I guess noother applicants did either. Idid weekly programs as part ofLife Enrichment's Roots ‘n’Shoots program and helped plantand maintain the Gazebo courtyard. (I havesince taken an OSU short course on horticultural therapy andread a number of books on the subject.)

I believe staying in touch with nature is enormously impor-tant - whether we are two or a hundred and two - viewing flowers

out a window, enjoying a plant in your room, eating a tomatoright off the vine, smelling the lavender you brush as you walk by,or watching the peacocks eat everything in sight. (They do lovethe turnip tops.) I hope someone helps me keep my "hands in thedirt" and flowers all around if (or when) the day comes that I amunable to do it all myself. We can never truly pay back all the giftswe receive, so I think in some very small ways, I am trying to "pay

it forward."

Mary Lou HavenerI am the owner of MB GARDENS. I

offer a wide variety of landscaping services, as well as specializing in water gardens

and features. I propagate waterplants and a variety of other

plant material which I grow in my greenhouses.

Deciding to make acareer change, I went back to college and earned adegree in Nursery andGreenhouse Management.(And boy did I make achange! I went from suits and heels to jeans and boots.)I am a current board member for The TulsaGarden Center, a consultantfor The Linnaeus TeachingGarden, listed in Who's

Who of Colleges andProfessional and ExecutiveRegistry's, Past President of the Oklahoma Chapter of The National Association for

Landscape Designers, Past-President of The Green Country

Water Garden Society and a currentboard member of Oklahoma Certified

Florists. I also speak on horticulture related subjects for variousgroups and seminars.

How did I come to connect with Saint Simeon's? I received a phone call from a business associate asking if I would be

interested in servicing a water garden at Saint Simeon's. I met with Kathy Hinkle and immediately fell in love

with the pond, the facility, the staff, and theResidents. I felt compelled to do more than just

service the pond, and I began working withJanet Williamson through the Roots

‘n’ Shoots program inviting theResidents to watch while I

performed special tasks in thewater garden and speaking to them about plants. When I am servicing the pond, I am so pleased when aResident stops to watch and visit about what I am doing.

Hopefully theResidents and staff learnfrom me - I certainly learnfrom the Residents. I haveheard so many unique and interesting anecdotesabout their lives, and I amhonored when they sharetheir stories with me. When asked to co-chair the Landscape Committee I immediately said, "Yes!"Saint Simeon's is very special in so many ways.

I want to help create an outdoor environment pleasing

for the Residents, their families, the staff, and, yes, all of God's creatures that co-habitat on theproperty! I have been very blessed by becoming involved withSaint Simeon's.

Tobacco Free Campus PolicyHealthy Living Initiative:

In order to provide and maintain a safe and healthy environment for its Residents and employees, SaintSimeon’s has developed a “Tobacco Free Campus Policy.” In conjunction with the American Cancer Society’s“Great American Smoke-Out,” the policy will take effect on November 20, 2008.

The policy prohibits the use of any tobacco product anywhere on the property of Saint Simeon’sEpiscopal Home as well as in personal vehicles while on Saint Simeon’s property. While this will be achange for the Home, we believe this is a positive step forward in focusing on healthy living initiatives.

We have partnered with “1-800-QUIT-NOW” which has provided Oklahoma Residents withwonderful resources for those who wish to quit smoking. Whether it is through reading material, med-ications, or a combination of resources, the “1-800-QUIT-NOW” has opened opportunities for ouremployees (and their family members) that had not been available before.

While this policy does not require that all of our employees be non-smokers (or non-tobaccousers), it does require that they not use tobacco while on our campus. In addition, it will require all ofour Residents and their family members to be non-tobacco users while on campus as well (except forcottage Residents who will be “grandfathered” into their current unit only).

As we institute this policy, we will be working to assist those who wish to quit smoking by provid-ing resources, encouragement, incentives, etc. Changing a habit is never easy, but with support andencouragement (characteristics for which Saint Simeon’s is known!), anything is possible.

All family members, residents and friends of Saint Simeon’s are welcome to join the Auxiliary. For membership information contact: Karen Garren at (918) 794-1945 or [email protected].

The Auxiliary’s mission is to enrich andenhance the lives of the Residents. Providingspecial events for Residents, families andfriends of the Home is just one way theAuxiliary accomplishes its goals. Each year the Auxiliary sponsors an “old-fashioned” Ice Cream Social at the Home. On a picture

perfect June evening Residents, families and friends gathered in the AdministrationCourtyard for a wonderful concert of patrioticmusic provided by the Tulsa CommunityBand. Members of Boy Scout Troop 168 fromOwasso presented the colors. The troop alsoassisted by serving the ice cream and cookieswhich were generously donated by MorrisonSenior Dining, Saint Simeon’s dietary service. Thanks go to Auxiliary members, Pat and Bud Martin, who served as co-chairs for this popular event!

Another great party the Auxiliary hosts thathas become a popular tradition is the OktoberfestFall Cookout. This event was held October 9 atthe City View Patio & Dining Room. Auxiliarymember, Brenda Haesloop, served as this year’sevent chair. Residents, family members and friendswere treated to authentic German music, food, and, of course, “Chicken Dancing!”

Christmas at the Home would not becomplete without a visit from Santa. TheAuxiliary has a direct line to the North Poleand secures Santa’s (and Mrs. Claus’) presenceevery year for the Residents’ Christmas Parties.Auxiliary “elves” are already busy planning thisyear’s parties which will be held on December20th. This year’s event chair is Jack Ward. There will be festive holiday entertainmentand delicious refreshments. Santa will, ofcourse, have a gift for each Resident, who mayhave a souvenir photo taken with the Clauses.

The Auxiliary Loves a Party!
