Introduction In respect of the livelihood of the bird guides of the region, this report does not provide GPS coordinates for

the localities of the birds seen on the trip. Part of the salary of the bird guides consists of the tips they

receive from satisfied customers and since bird guiding is a seasonal job, with a maximum extension of 6

month a year, it is very important to make sure that the professional bird guides have a viable business

year after year. Their knowledge of the area and its natural life should therefore be guarded and

appreciated.

Having said that, we had a fabulous trip during which we saw 257 species of birds, 24 species of mammals,

88 species of butterflies and 9 species of reptiles.

The landscapes of the Western Ghats of Kerala and Tamil Nadu are fabulous and uncrowded with huge

variety. We were blessed with very fine weather and reasonable temperatures, meaning not too hot for a

couple of Scandinavians used to a little colder climate.

The people were friendly, the hotels good, the food excellent and the landscape and wildlife incredible.

Acknowledgement Thanks to Thomas Zacharias, Kalypso Adventures, for the great trip arrangement. It is so nice to

communicate with a person who acts promptly, is serious and flexible, and is proactive and Thomas is all of

that. In-spite-of the 4½ hour time difference between India and Denmark, we were always promptly met

with an answer, a solution, a recommendation to whatever we asked. Thank you for that.

Thanks to our guide Sudheesh Sujathan, who is truly gifted within the natural field. With intimate knowledge

of the wildlife of southern India, both birds, mammals, butterflies and reptiles, Sudheesh knows the habitats

and the landscapes we travelled through and the wildlife that inhabits them and combined with the

knowledge of the calls and songs of all the birds of the area, it was a pleasure to go birding in his company.

His comment - ‘it’s not luck but skill’ - when we saw a rare bird or mammal was quite right.

Sudheesh is not only a great birder, but also a very interesting person to spend time with and we learned a

lot about both Kerala and Tamil Nadu during the days of our trip. Even though we did speak about lots of

things during our driving time, one ear and one eye was always on the birds outside and we often stopped

mid-sentence to cramble out of the car for a passing Black eagle or Rufous Woodpecker. Thanks for that –

without doubt that is the reason for us seeing so much and having such a great time.

Thanks to our two drivers Sunil and Jojis for their good humour and endless patience, having to stop and

reverse all the time to see a little brown bird. It requires enormous patience coping with the at times chaotic

traffic, having an endless number of 3-wheeler taxis pull out straight in front of you, with no care to own or

others lives, is really stressing. Drivers of that calibre are made of special material and my only wish is that

there were more with that skill in my own country.

Transportation

We traveled by car to all locations. Kalypso Adventures supplied a very comfortable car for our trip, with

very skilled drivers.

Navigation

We were blessed with a driver with local knowledge of the area, so navigation was never an issue.

Visa

E-visa – 30 day. Remember to print a version with your picture on it. We had not printed a version with a

picture on it and this gave us some trouble at the airport leaving Denmark. After this was solved, we had no

more problems.

Money

The Indian rupee was about 10 Rupees to 1 Danish krone. We changed an adequate amount while

transferring from one flight to another at Doha, Qatar

Cost

Apart from the pre-paid trip arranged by Kalypso Adventures we only needed money for tips and a few

drinks. By Danish standards prices were not high.

Health and safety

We had no trouble with our health and safety was no problem anywhere on the trip. Seen in hindsight we

were very lucky that the corona pandemic had not broken out yet. We just made it home before Denmark

closed down two days later.

Weather

Mostly sunny and warm. Only two small showers of rain during the whole trip – one during the early hours

at night and one during the day well timed to coincide with the return to the car from a good birding trek.

VISITED SITES

Hornbill Camp – 25.02, 26.02 and 27.02.2020

The locality covers 500m both sides of the entrance, the whole of Hornbill Camp and the view of the Periyar

river from the plot.

Tented camp on a plot of land bordering the Periyar river with a fine view to the Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary.

To the left of the entrance is a small rubber plantation and to the right a series of smaller lakes.

Sitting in front of the tent gives good views of the birds on the river and those crossing over to and from the

bird sanctuary. The ever-present sound of White-cheeked Barbet adds to the atmosphere and there is

River Tern, Whiskered Tern, Little Cormorant and White-throated Kingfisher along the river nearly all the

time.

We had some good sightings from the tent of crossing Malabar Parakeet, Malabar Grey Hornbill and

Crested Serpent-eagle. There was always a little group of ‘seven sisters’ – Jungle Babblers near the tent

chatting away incessantly.

Urulanthanni – 25.02, 26.02 and 27.02.2020

Urulanthanni is an area well-known for its general forest birding, and at the same time being Sudheesh’ backyard. Sudheesh has birded here since a boy, which of cource gave us an advantage. We spent lots of time walking through the forest on small paths and places, where there were no paths at all, to find the elusive Sri Lanka Bay Owl, which we found resting about 4m off ground well hidden in the foliage. We also spent time resting and having our packed breakfast on the massive granite rocks giving a commanding view of the forest below and while doing so, picking up an impressive list of Western Ghats specialities, including Malabar Barbet, Malabar Grey Hornbill, Malabar Starling, Malabar Parakeet, Malabar Woodshrike, Flame-throated Bulbul, Grey-fronted Green Pigeon and Asian Fairy Bluebird. A short walk nearby produced a pair of roosting Sri Lanka Frogmouths and here it was easy to see, that a lot of birders visits the site. Lots of small paths around the bush where they were roosting. En route to a river area nearby, to find Blue-eared Kingfisher, which we added to our ever growing list, we picked up an Oriental Dwarf Kingfisher, a lovely bird to see perched in a dried-out gully and a roosting Indian Scops-Owl. Siting here at the river bend near a pool enjoying the forest, we were lucky to see quite a few different butterflies and photograph a few. While here at Urulanthanni, we visited a temple, at which a festival was in progress. There were lots of worshippers, food stalls, an Indian Elephant and very loud music. It was a great experience for us to see the many worshippers arrive and climb up to the temple and being able to climb up the mountain ourselves to see and hear the ceremony up close without disturbing. Periyar River – 25.02 and 26.02.2020

The observations from Periyar river covers the river from the crossing of the bridge at Thattekad to the

Periyar River Lodge just north of Kuttampuza.

We walked short distances and drove slowly along the river several times at different times of the days and

many of the same birds were seen at the same locations. We were very lucky to see the Lesser Fish-Eagle

fly down to the riverbank to drink for a long time before flying up in a nearby tree to groom.

Highlights: Lesser Fish-eagle Birdlist: https://ebird.org/checklist/S65926279

Thalakode – 27.02.2020

Lovely little forest area at which we were very lucky to see the only Gray Slender Loris of the trip. The Loris,

two of them, were very well hidden and only I managed to see both of them, before they crept into a very

dark shelter at the top of the little tree. They were so well hidden in the dark of the leaf matter, that it was

necessary to take a picture and enlarge it to see the little face looking down at us.

This was a good owl site, as we also had good sightings of Brown Fish Owl, Jungle Owlet and Indian

Scops-Owl at this site.

Indian Scops Owl (otus bakkamoena)

Thattekkad – 27.02.2020

This locality covers the town itself and the river just around the town. We walked along the river at dusk and found a real good place to look for owls and just as it was getting dark a couple of Great-eared Nightjar were seen cruising over the river and the trees on the opposite side. Another spectacular experience was to see the sun setting over the river and huge numbers of herons and Little Cormorants flying past to their roosting site. Shortly after dark an owl flew over the river and landed in a tree nearby. Spotlighting revealed an Indian Scops Owl. Great Hornbill (buceros bicornis)

Periyar Tiger Reserve – 28.02 and 29.02.2020

We had two very good walks in this reserve, both with the same guide, who could tell us that he had

sighted a Tiger the day before. We were not that lucky, but still had fabulous walks through the reserve

seeing both great mammals and great birds.

On the second walk we chanced upon a Gaur bull with an abcess on its throat, see picture below. We

walked a large circle around this animal. It was great to see the elephants up close and the many nearly

unafraid Wild Boar.

We were also fortunate to see a Great Hornbill feeding on fruits and probably returning to a nesting hole

with the loot, as it returned from the same direction.

Gaur bull (bos gaurus)

Bodi Ghat – 01.03.2020

This location covers several stops en route along the foot of the mountain range to look for Yellow-throated

Bulbul which we saw after a couple of stops. First stop also gave good looks at Ashy Prinia and Tawny-

bellied Babbler.

Page 13: WESTERN GHATS FEB. 25-MAR. 9, 2020 India - CloudBirders

There were a few different raptors circling above – Black Eagle, Changeable Hawk-Eagle and Oriental

Honey-Buzzard.

This was quite a birdy stretch of road in-spite-of extremely loud music from a nearby temple. It really is

incredible that the wildlife is not bothered by the noise, but that seemed not to be the case.

Lockhart Gap Road – 01.03.2020

This location covers the steep hill sides near the top of the road.

We stopped at a very steep and barren rock slope near the top to look for Nilgiri Pipit and walked/climbed

up and down for quite a long time seeing only Paddyfield Pipits. Just as we had given up and were

returning to the car, we saw two Nilgiri Pipits running in the short grass ahead of us. They were quite

difficult to see at first, but as we stood still for a while they showed very well.

We were very fortunate to see a Eurasian Wryneck at this site. It came low over the hill and flew almost

between our legs showing the back stripe very clearly. This was a lifer for our guide and a good surprise for

us.

We also had excellent looks a a Blue Rock Thrush the only one for the trip.

Munnar – 01.03 and 02.03.2020

This location covers Munnar City and the area around our hotel Olive Brook which had probably the best

birding in their own grounds of all the hotels on our trip. The birds came to a small bird bath just outside the

dining room and it was great to sit 3 meters away watching Puff-throated Babblers, India Blue Robin, Black-

lored Tit, Brown-cheeked Fulvetta and many others come to drink and take a bath.

We did some walks in the area and saw White-bellied Blue Robin, White-bellied Blue Flycatcher, Nilgiri Flycatcher, Palani Laughingthrush, Grey-headed Canary Flycatcher, Square-tailed Bulbul, Nilgiri Wood-Pigeon and large numbers of Rosefinches. In a small cave, we saw a Large-scaled Pit Viper coiled up in a small bush, so well camouflaged that it took us several minutes and the exact right angle to see it. We were also quite lucky to see a Civet Cat on the roof of the hotel. This place was absolutely one of the highlights of the trip. Pampadum Scola National Park – 02.03.2020

This morning, we went to the Pampadum Shola National Park, about 1.5 hours’ drive from Munnar. It is not easy to start early in the National Parks of Kerala and Tamil Nadu, they certainly do not cater for birders, with their late openings and request that all visitors are accompanied with a ranger that do not really have the time. We had to start by stopping at the gate and requesting a guide, who really could not be available before 10 o’clock, then take a slow drive through the park and back, and then wait for yet another half hour for a guide to come along. Surely something could be done to accommodate the nature interested tourists without disturbing the animals of the National Park. I am certain that there is dedicated staff, who would like to start at an earlier hour and show off the wonders of their National Park to the very interested tourist. Pampadum Shola National Park is a pristine habitat with few people, and we thoroughly enjoyed a walk through it. Black-and-Orange and Nilgiri Flycatcher were seen, there were sightings of Asian Fairy-Bluebird, Indian Scimitar-Babbler and a few good views of Large-billed Leaf Warbler. At one point our National Park guide quickly stepped aside of a little bush and in that bush was a small Green Vine Snake. It was so hard to see, being very slender and small, but we did manage a few good pictures. Pampadum Shola is one of the best sites for the endangered endemic Nilgiri Marten, but as it is with the elusive mustelids all over the world, we did not see one even though the hope lived. Common Vine Snake (ahaetulla nasuta)

Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary – 03.03.2020

This location covers a few stops along the road going through the sanctuary and a walk with a ranger.

The park was very birdy and we did a good walk along the river seeing a great number of birds and some

very “friendly” Bonnet Macaque, which we kept a good eye on. We did look for owls at this site but were not

in luck.

Along the river we heard Stork-billed Kingfisher, which until now had eluded us, and after a lot of searching,

we finally found one, which showed very well for us. At one stop we chanced upon a nesting Red-breasted

Flycather and at the same place saw both Brown-headed Barbet and White-browed Fantail.

Highlights: Stork-billed Kingfisher, Coppersmith Barbet, Brown-headed Barbet, Red-breasted Flycatcher, Nilgiri Flycatcher, Blue-throated Flycatcher, Tickell’s Blue Flycatcher, White-browed Fantail, Black-headed Cuckooshrike Birdlist: https://ebird.org/checklist/S65966366

Stanmore Bungalow area – 03.03, 04.03 and 05.03.2020

The observations recorded for this location covers the tea estates in a 5 km radius from Stanmore

Bungalow.

As we came close to our hotel a very agitated bull Indian Elephant stood at the top af a small hill swinging

its trunk trumpeting. It looked as if it had expected to be able to cross the road at this point, but found that

there was a 10 meter stoop down to the road and felt caught between us coming up the road, people

behind in the tea plantation and the steep descent. We moved quickly past.

A booted Eagle were seen near the Bungalow on a few occasions.

The bungalow itself was quite a unique experience – having been the home of the tea estate manager in

the old days it was quite spaceous with a great atmosphere. The grounds had both Streak-throated

Woodpecker and Stripe-necked Mongoose.

Valparai in the Anamalai hills – 04.03.2020

This location covers the City and the tea plantations just around the city.

In the morning we took a walk in the tea plantations, where we saw quite a few Lion-tailed Macaque and

Gaur. A flock of Brown-backed Needletail whirled around a hill in the tea giving good and long sights. We

were fortunate to see and hear Palani Laughingthrush as well.

Other good sightings were Indian Scimitar-Babbler, Orange-headed Thrush, Velvet-fronted Nuthach,

Blythe’s Reed Warbler, Malabar Barbet to name a few.

itself.

Lion-tailed Macaque (macaca silenus)

Coimbatore – 05.03.2020

The observations from Coimbatore are solely from the huge lake/reservoirs at the centre of town. Not the

sort of place you would go for a quiet birding trip, but here among the chaotic traffic, there were quite a

number of water birds to be seen. We were very happy to see the birds and even more happy leaving the

huzzle and buzzle of town behind us.

Nilgiri Tahr (nilgiritragus hylocrius)

Ooty - 05.03 and 06.03.2020

This site covers the city itself and the area around the Accord Hotel. We started with a short walk in the hotel grounds and picked up Indian White-eye, Nilgiri Sholakili, Black-and-orange Flycatcher, Tickell’s Leaf Warbler. Then we went a little down the road to try and see Painted Bush-Quail and succeeded in seeing two different males. In Ooty next morning we stopped a a small lake and saw Indian Spot-billed Duck and two Spot-breasted Fantail before travelling on towards Mudumalai. Spot-bellied Eagle-owl (bubo nipalensis)

Mudumalai – 06.03, 07.03 and 08.03.2020

The observations from this locality are from the vicinity of Jungle Hut, the access road to Jungle Hut, the

scrub area around Mavanalla and from driving slowly through the park.

The area is really fantastic for both mammals and birds and we were fortunate to see lots of both. Coming

home to Jungle hut in the afternoon we chanced upon a Bluebuck male strutting about trying to impress a

female. She was hard to impress and walked away grazing with the male following. This was an

unexpected sighting as was being chased by an Indian Elephant early next morning while driving out from

Jungle Hut to go birding. We were going at a faster speed than the elephant, so it was more of a surprise

than a threat to us.

We did a lot of walks in the area around Jungle Hut and had very good looks at an adult and a chick Spot-

bellied Eagle Owl, a Spotted Owlet that we could walk right around without spooking it and Jungle Nightjar

just at sunset. In the scrub area near Mavanalla we saw a small flock of White-bellied Minivet, Jungle Bush-

Quail, Barred Buttonquail, Jerdon's Bushlark, Malabar Lark, Gray Francolin. This was a great place to walk

as it was open with low vegetation and lots of birds.

At a small garbage dump among quite a few Black Kite we had good looks at a Steppe Eagle, which

seemed a little out of range and leaving Mudumalai on the last morning we were lucky to see, probably the

same Steppe Eagle perched in a tree next to the main road through the National Park.

Other good raptor sightings were a single Black-shouldered Kite hovering next to the road and the only

vultures of the trip, both Indian Vulture and Red-headed Vulture.

We looked in vain for Nilgiri Thrush, but it was probably too late and too dry.

Highlights: Blackbuck male and female, Steppe eagle, Black-shouldered Kite, Indian and Red-headed Vulture, White-bellied minivet, Great Spotted Eagle-owl, Spotted Owlet, Brown Fish Owl, Painted and Jungle Bush-quail, Jungle Nightjar, Thick-billed and Pale-billed Flowerpecker. Rice fields near Adatt, Thrissur – 08.03.2020

Having been very much in the hills and mountains we did a diversion to the very flat rice fields near Adatt near Thrissur on our way to the airport on the last day of our trip. This gave us an opportunity to see some birds, which we did not have a chance to see in the hills. We picked up Eurasian Spoonbill, Blue-tailed Bee-eater, several singing Plain Prinia, Rosy Starling, Baya Weaver, Triclored Munia and Yellow Wagtail
