FC Twenty11 has had its application for a grant to repair floodlights at Upper Riccarton Domain turned down.

In a joint application with the Fendalton-Waimairi Community Board, the football club asked for $2239 to replace underground cables for the floodlights.

A final decision regarding the funding was made at the Riccarton-Wigram Community Board meeting last week.

Community board chairman Mike Mora said he was reluctant to deny the grant.

“It’s just a matter of the limited funds that we do have in the discretionary response fund.

“We do know it’s three to four nights a week now they’ll go

without until they get their lights up, but now it’s summer sport season there will be less need for them,” he said.

FC Twenty11 boss Eddie Cropley said even though the soccer season was over, teams were still training for tournaments.

“It is what it is, we’ve got various plans. We’ll just box on and work with what we’ve got,” he said.

Funding was declined because board members said there were other sources that were more suitable for funding this project.

In June, the Riccarton-Wigram Community Board approved a grant of $500 from its 2013-14 discretionary response fund to the club towards the cost of repairs.

There is currently $41,197 available in the community board’s 2014-15 discretionary response fund.

An early learning centre in Ilam will now have fewer road safety is-sues around peak traffic times.

The Montana Avenue Early Learning Centre has gained city council approval to have 30 min-ute parking restrictions in place to provide a safer environment for collecting and retrieving children.

The residential road forms the northern edge of Canterbury Uni-versity.

It was requested the city council

install the parking restrictions on Montana Ave, outside its premises, to reduce the amount of parents double parking in the area.

Riccarton-Wigram Community Board chairman, Mike Mora, said the board agreed to the request of 30 minute parking, but did ques-tion whether it should only be 15 minute parking instead.

When the Nor’West spoke to Montana Avenue Early Learning Centre manager Yvonne Smith, before the board meeting, she said she was worried about the poten-

tial danger the busy drop-off zone could bring.

“Our parents are concerned that we don’t have enough parking. They often have to double park, some-times they’ve got fines too,” she said.

However, this time she declined to comment.

In 2012, the community board approved the Ilam Rd crossings project, which included the instal-lation of the first on-road separat-ed cycle facilities along the front-age of the university.

The project installation required

the removal of kerb-side parking on Ilam Rd, which meant there was no parking available near the early learning centre.

The northern side of Montana Ave had been designated two hour parking and had standard P120 university parking restrictions along its length.

The southern side was all-day parking.

Both the north and south sides of Montana Ave would usually be parked out during the university year.

Sport hub consultationAt the Halswell Residents’ Asso-ciation meeting tonight, city coun-cil development manager Simon Battrick will speak to the group about the Nga Puna Wai con-sultation. The group will also be consulted about the status of the Halswell history project proposal for the new Halswell Library, and the status of old Halswell Library site. The group will also discuss arrangements for the upcoming Neighbourhood Week next week.

Owner Noel Dick said he was wrapped with the award. “We always hoped we would be doing this well. Students at Hornby High School got a real taste of what it is like in the workforce.

Under a programme called Work Inspiration, four year 11 students, Jack Fisher, Moesha Quigley, Bevan Gibson and Nas-eeba Kaskar, spent four days at Westpac Hornby branch taking a look behind the scenes.

Hornby High was the first school in New Zealand to trial the programme, led by Careers New Zealand.

The students were selected based on their attitude and com-

mitment by the school principal Dick Edmundson and head of careers, Wendy Toohey.

Mr Edmundson said it was a far more beefed-up work experi-ence.

“They were really like interns,” he said.

He said after their four days working they then gave staff members at the school presenta-tions about what they had learnt.

Chief executive of Westpac New Zealand Rob Hunt said staff themselves found it energising.

“You don’t just turn up to work as a banker one day, it’s quite

more varied. We have people here from all backgrounds, one was a teppanyaki chef before this.

It was interesting for the students to see you don’t need only one career in your life,” he said.

GAME ON: Chris ‘Ted’ Casserly has been putting in the hard yards to come out on top in the Fight for Christchurch 2014.

Chris ‘Ted’ Casserly, owner of the former Ted’s Bar & Grill in Halswell which was destroyed by fire a year ago, will be boxing in the upcom-ing Fight for Christchurch 2014 against Winnie Bagoes owner Geoff Cavell to raise money for Cure Kids. Reporter Grace Cabell spoke with him about what has motivated him to fight and how he made the career switch from Pentecostal minister to publican . . .

So Chris, I have seen a nick-name around, ‘Father Ted’ – what’s the story behind this?

Well, before I was a publi-can, I was a minister for 15 years, a Pentecostal minister. All my mates used to call me Father Chris, till one day I was having a beer with my mate down in Rakaia and someone called me Father Ted, and it has stuck ever since.

How did you get into the restaurant game? Is Ted’s the only bar you’ve owned?

Yeah, it is. I’ve been involved in the indus-try for about 15 years. I used to be the man-ager at The Fitz, Toast Bar at Sol Square, and then my last sort of gig before I bought Ted’s Bar and Grill was as the general manager at Aikmans.

How long had you owned Ted’s Bar and Grill before the fire?

Just about 12 months.So, you unfortunately lost the bar in a

fire, right?Yeah. It was determined as spontaneous

combustion, a freak accident.I was pretty gutted when I lost it. I bought

out the receivers. We were losing money for the first six months. I refurbished it and put about $600,000 into doing that. We were doing very, very well and had turned the

whole place around. Then the fire happened, just as we were coming into summer. The landlord was selling the land so I did look at buying it, but I just can’t.

Do you live in Hals-well?

Yeah, I do at the moment.Have you always lived in Christchurch?

Did you grow up here?I was brought up on the mean streets of

Aranui. Yeah, I loved it. I went to Aranui High School. I started off at St James Pri-mary School, then Chisnallwood Intermedi-ate then Aranui High School.

I see you have some pretty personal mo-tivations for opting into the fight?

Yep. I did it for my youngest daughter Courtney, who is 14 now. At the age of two, she was diagnosed with Wolff Parkinson White Syndrome, which is basically a cardio jack of the heart. A normal child’s heartbeat turns at 110 beats per minute and hers was at 280. So she was at very high risk of going into cardiac arrest.

At the age of five, she had her first heart surgery at Starship in Auckland. They weren’t able to fix the issue because if they did, she would have had a pacemaker.

We think her life would have been considerably reduced having that at such a young age.

So a new procedure was devel-oped and at seven years of age she had her second heart surgery and they fixed it.

How does she feel about you stepping into the ring?

She doesn’t want me to fight! But she’s excited about raising the funds for Cure Kids. It’s very dear to her own heart as well.

So have you done much box-ing before?

When I was 13 I used to box out at a working men’s club but that was a long, long time ago!

I’m guessing you’ve been training pretty hard, what have you had to do to prepare?

Well, I’m doing six training ses-sions a week, as well as now I’ve started to do extra swimming and things like that for fitness. I do three personal training sessions and three two-and-a-half hour boxing circuits of sparring each week.

How long have you been train-ing?

About two months now.So, Chris, are you nervous?Nope! Nah, look, I’m feeling

more and more confident each day. My fitness has improved so much, it’s incredible. I was more than 120kg when I started this journey and I’m down to 108kg now. It’s great – I can actually see my toes now!

So do you have a game plan, or is that a secret?

Survive! I just want to get out of the ring without Geoff having done too much damage to my pretty face.

Once you step foot in that ring there is nowhere to hide. Neither one of us are going to take a step backwards.

What do you think about your opponent, what are your chances?

I don’t plan on losing. Yeah, I’ll beat him. Geoff ’s a good mate so it makes this whole challenge just that much different.

So it’s a bit of a war then, is it?Geoff and I are calling it the

battle of the century. Last week Geoff turned 51 and in November I turn 49. So there is a 100 years between us.

So what’s your favourite meal? I shouldn’t say pizza, should

I? No, my favourite meal would have to be lasagna. I’d like to say I make the best lasagna in the world, but ‘mumma’ at Venuti does. You really can’t beat her lasagna, it’s the best I’ve ever had.

Do you have any other chil-dren?

I’ve got three kids: my son Alex, who is 21, and I think he’s going to be the next New Zealand barista champion. He placed fifth at the nationals this year. Then there is Kimberley, who is 19, and she is doing a degree in medical imaging at CPIT, and then there

is Courtney, who is 14 and goes to Hillview Christian School.

How do the kids feel about you fighting?

Well, Courtney doesn’t want me to, Kimberley is a bit unsure but my son Alex, well, he just wants to see me get my head knocked off!

Do you have anyone in your life that has really inspired you?

Inspiration wise, probably for me it would be Nelson Mandela. I think his ability to succeed out of adversity, and no matter what pushed him down he stood up and succeeded. As the saying goes, what does not kill you makes you stronger, and the only time you ever fail is when you refuse to get up.

Bit like you will be in the fight

then?Yeah! You won’t keep me down.So Chris, what’s the first thing

you would do if you win?First thing I’m going do when I

win (is) I am going to have a beer; I have not had a drink in four

weeks. No drinks for me until after the fight. Hopefully I’m going to have that beer with Geoff if he still loves me.

Huge focus on residential develop-ment in Halswell has concerned many about the lack of youth facilities available to support it.

At a youth forum set up by the Halswell Youth Network earlier this year, one of the major issues identified was the lack of recre-ational facilities.

Halswell Residents’ Association member David Hawke said he had been battling with the project since 2007.

The association had been work-ing alongside youth in the area to develop an outdoor facility.

But after a meeting with the Riccarton-Wigram Community Board last week, it seemed the plan may finally gain traction.

The group was worried they had missed out on both key site selection and funding opportuni-ties due to a lack of city council support.

“The council had done very little in terms of finding a site. The Todd Foundation application just closed end of last month – it would have been an ideal project for both of

us, but no site means no project,” he said.

At the board meeting Mr Hawke presented ideas for youth commu-nity facilities in the area.

“I think the council is trying to imagine the new Halswell Library as the ‘youth facility’, which, in my view, is missing the point.

“Although the $22 million li-brary is a really welcomed devel-opment, librarians usually want to go home. So there is a need for unstructured operations too,” he said.

The community board, however, aimed to get a site sorted so non-government funding could begin.

Halswell Community Project member Chrys Horn said the board seemed positive but knew they still had a long road ahead.

She said she understood the difficult financial situation the city council was in.

“But Halswell is growing so fast, and we don’t have a lot here at all for the young people.”

She said there was almost no outdoor facilities available in Halswell.

“We asked the kids where they go if they want to meet each other and they said they go to Riccar-ton mall. It’s a bit distressing that kids have to leave the town to find somewhere to hang out,” she said.

“What does that say about our priorities?”

She said youth also needed somewhere “where they’re not go-ing to be overrun by adults.”

Community board chairman, Mike Mora, said the group was do-ing a great job consulting youth in the area to see what their needs are and agreed there was an issue.

“Oh hell yes. I really do feel sorry for the young people,” he said.

Mr Hawke said it was an issue that had been left too long.

“If you compare the Halswell population from 2007 to what it is now, it’s enormous. The longer they sit on their hands the more of a problem it will become,” said Mr Hawke.

Mr Mora said they were now going to work closely now with young people, city council staff and the board to pin down a suit-able location to fulfil their needs.

The accolades keep coming for young musician Frances Daly.

The year 12 Marian College student recently received the Best Original Composition award at the CPIT JazzQuest for her piece Defective Detective.

The award was followed with further kudos at the Southern Jam Youth Jazz Festival held in Blenheim, where Frances received

the Royal New Zealand Air Force Band Adjudicator’s Choice trophy for her performance on piano for the school jazz band.

Frances has been committed for many years to her musical craft, and will sit her grade eight piano exams later this year.

Frances’ long-term goal is to make music her career, either in New Zealand or overseas.

Three men were caught while trying to burgle a house in Cracroft, thanks to the quick actions of a neighbour.

The neighbour noticed people acting suspiciously at the property next door on Tuesday afternoon, and phoned the police.

The police went to the house and caught three men, two inside the property and one in a vehicle parked in the driveway.

The house appeared to have been ransacked, and a large amount of property was stacked up near the doorway.

“Without the neighbour’s input, the men may not have

been caught as quickly as they were,” Detective Senior Sergeant Scott Anderson said.

“It’s really good to see members of the community looking out for each other and taking quick positive action by alerting police to anything that is out of the ordinary or suspicious.”

Association secretary Rick Bolch said there was a close-knit community in the area, and people looked out for each other.

The three men, aged 26, 24 and 23 appeared in the district court last week in relation to the burglary.

The investigation into the burglary is still on-going.

A man who had the rare honour of turning 100 on Christmas Day has died.

Noel Allen was well known for his involvement in the commu-nity and his sense of humour.

He was born on Christmas Day, 1913, in Nelson, the young-est in a family of four children.

After starting school in Nelson, his family moved to Palmerston North, then to New Brighton and Linwood.

After leaving school, he worked as a messenger boy delivering books by bike for a bookshop, and then became an apprentice motor mechanic. At one stage, he worked for International Harvester, but said he didn’t enjoy this as it was too dirty and greasy.

For recreation, he played hockey, went cross-country running and, with Win whom he was to later marry, learned to play Hawaiian guitar. He was always interested in motor bikes and used to take Win riding in his sidecar.

Noel and Win married on 16 March 1940, during World War II. Noel enlisted in the Air Force and served as an aircraft me-chanic in the Solomon Islands.

After the war, Noel joined NAC as an aircraft engineer and worked there until he retired. During that time, NAC merged with TEAL to become Air New Zealand. For many years he biked daily from Avonside to the airport, sometimes falling off his bike on icy winter roads.

Noel and Win were the parents of four children who have happy memories of outings to the beach on Sunday afternoons, and camping holidays.

On becoming a grandparent, he was a hands-on grandad, taking his grandchildren rowing on the Avon River, or to the park or beach. He had eight grand-children, 12 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.

In his later years, Noel and Win travelled the country in the various cars he owned. He was known for his Mazda with its Hi D Hi numberplate.

Noel and Win made many trips to visit their children in Hamilton, and when Win was no longer able to travel with him, Noel would travel alone, the last time being in October last year when he was aged 99.

Noel liked cars and enjoyed driving. He said long-distance driving and crossing on the inter-island ferry never fazed him.

Noel and Win were actively associated with the Wainoni Methodist Church. As his deaf-ness became more profound, he said he couldn’t hear a word of the Sunday services, but he was seldom absent from his usual seat because he enjoyed the friendship.

Associated with the Wai-noni Methodist Church is the

Wainoni-Avonside Community Services Trust (WACST) that provides a range of community and social services including Sit & Be Fit in which Noel and Win both participated with enthusi-asm.

Noel was a popular member at WACST and his birthday became a special occasion at the annual end-of-year celebrations.

Trust coordinator Betty Chap-man said it had been an honour and a privilege to have known him.

“I have only known Noel for 12 and a half years of his long life, but he sure has made a huge impact in my life and I am sure that statement is true for many of us.”

Noel spent several months in Burwood Hospital before his death, after falling and injuring himself.

The funeral for Noel was held at Harewood Crematorium.

Congratulations to Anna Taylor who has just returned from a successful NZAIMS Games that were held recently in Tauranga. Anna, a Year 8 student, was placed first in the Senior Womens’ grade in Rhythmic Gymnastics, competing across 3 apparatus

hoop, ball and clubs. Anna said “it was a fantastic opportunity to compete and be around other school kids of the same age that had similar interests”.This has capped off a very successful year for Anna who trains at the Diva Rhythmic Gymnastics Club. Anna represented New Zealand in Melbourne, placing 3rd overall at the Australian Gymnastic Championships in her grade.This year the Games, that are held annually, included 17 sports and were attended by 228 schools and had 7,500 student athletes competing.

Rachel Bunn was accepted by the Canterbury Ballet to perform in their Junior Company at the Prague International Dance Festival and Competition in July. They won the Junior Grand Prix prize.

Music Every second year Kirkwood puts on a fabulous stage presentation. Because 2014 was a ‘between’ year, students were in-vited to participate in a ‘Showcase’ to show off their fledging music and dance skills. A great night was had by all.

Hearing Technology is fully independent and locally owned since its inception 23 years ago, with clinics in Timaru,

The mail bags are full again. This week the tips range from a “feel-like-Cleopatra” face cleaner to a way of keeping your pot plants well watered!

Marie from Rotorua has this tip about face cleaner. “The best face cleaner you can get is ground almonds – from the bulk foods section at Pak ‘N Save. Make a thick paste with milk, and just be-fore using add a quarter teaspoon of salt. Rub fairly gently onto your skin at first as it is abrasive. Wash off with warm water. Makes you face feel like Cleopatra and her bath of milk!” Whoa!

Marie also has this unusual way of titivating silver beet. “Silver beet is our favourite vegetable. Wash well, chop very roughly and steam. Do not boil or overcook. Add a sprinkle of sugar and a sprinkle of nutmeg. Delicious.”

Nikita from Taupo has these tips for introducing fruit and vegeta-bles into the family diet. “Growing up I lived with my grandparents. I always had cereal with tinned fruit for breakfast, two pieces of fruit in my lunch plus a sandwich which normally had lettuce or something like that on it, and a piece of fruit when I got home from school. For dinner nana used to mix po-tato and kumara or pumpkin in a mash, and at least two other veges. So it’s not hard to get lots of fruit

and veges into your diet. I always went along to the supermarket and helped choose the fruit I wanted that week which made me more inclined to eat it. Now it’s just a habit to eat lots of fruit and veges every day.”

Now for another tip on cleaning dentures! J.M.L. from Whangarei writes, “To clean dentures use a teaspoon each of citric acid and baking soda. I found if I mixed these together in a container they hardened, so I keep them in separate containers. Put dentures in cup, add citric acid and baking soda, then cover with hot water. It will fizz when water is added. Rinse with clean water. Occasion-ally you will need to give dentures a clean with a toothbrush and just baking soda.”

Jill from Dannevirke has a sug-gestion for the reader who had cat invasion problems. “I have successfully used Jeyes fluid to deter cats. Sprinkle undiluted on the area targeted by the cats, but be sure to clean the area up first.

You may have to repeat a time or two, but cats hate it. It also works for dogs! Jeyes fluid can be hard to find, but I bought some recently.” [Jeyes Fluid is a multi-purpose cleaner and disinfectant that is used for a wide range of garden and outdoor cleaning jobs.]

J from Paraparaumu has this tip for getting out the last of the cream from containers. “Instead of cutting the top off a hand or body cream container put it in the microwave for about ten seconds, then pour the contents into a new container. Works well for makeup

and other products too.”KASW from Waikanae says,

“Baby wipes are wonderful for removing fly-spots from walls and ceilings.”

John from Whangarei says he got a number of great recycling tips from his latest gardening magazine. “To keep pot plants watered, punch a column of small holes down the side of a thin plastic bottle. Bury it in the pot with the top poking above the soil, and the holes facing the plant. Fill the bottle up and it will act like a reservoir and drip feed the plant.”

‘We think vegetables from yourown garden are delicious anyway,and one does not need to have theexcuse of a ‘‘fasting diet’’ to enjoythem.’

IT’S been a while since wetalked about the joys ofcooking vegetables, so wethought it time to have a

little bit of a catch-up. We werereminded about it whenlistening to the author of a newbook advocating a fruit andvegetable diet for two days aweek as a means to betterhealth. We think vegetablesfrom your own garden aredelicious anyway, and one doesnot need to have the excuse of a‘‘fasting diet’’ to enjoy them.

Lilley has a favourite recipefor using up tough broccolistems in a soup. ‘‘You will need:1 onion (diced), 1 large broccolistalk (diced), any left overbroccoli florets, 1 large potato, 1vegetable stock cube dissolvedin 2 cups water, 1 tsp butter, 1/4cup milk or cream, 1/4 cupcheese (optional), salt andpepper. Saute onion in butteruntil clear. Add broccoli andpotato. Cover with vegetablestock and simmer for 30minutes until very tender.Blend and season. Reheat witha little milk or cream. Sprinklewith cheese if you like.’’

Another reader has afavourite lemon butter toppingfor broccoli. ‘‘Simply add 12tbsp of lemon juice to 115g ofmelted butter. Mix in a littlesalt and pepper to taste. Stirtogether and pour over cookedbroccoli. Serve immediately.’’

What about these tips forgreen beans with a difference.‘‘Slice the beans and cook inwater. Add a packet of onionsoup mix and slicedmushrooms. Delicious!’’

Another great way to cookalmost any vegetable is astempura, which is a classicJapanese dish of deep friedbattered vegetables (likezucchini, onions, eggplants,carrots, green peppers, sweetpotatoes, string beans, broccoli,mushrooms). Vegetables with avery high water content aregenerally not suitable,however, as they tend to releasewater into the batter whilecooking. The veges need to becut thin enough to cook in thesame time it takes the batter tobecome crispy.

To make the batter you need1 cup plain flour, 1 egg, and 1cup ice cold water. Beat the eggin a bowl and stir in the icedwater. Add the flour and mixlightly with a wooden spoonhandle or chopstick to avoidover mixing (having lumps inthe batter is a hallmark oftempura). Dip in the vegetablesand deep fry in clean oil at180C, turning occasionally

until the batter is crisp andlight golden. Eat immediatelyafter cooking, while the batteris still crispy. With agarnishing of rock salt, lemonor lime juice, or with dips,tempura is a wonderful starter.It can also be used as a sidedish, especially with fish.

Lorraine has a tip forsilverbeet. ‘‘This is a usefulway to use as little or as muchsilverbeet as you like. I use fourleaves of silverbeet choppedfinely in a batter mixture of 3/4cup flour and 1 & 1/2 tsp bakingpowder. Whisk 1 or 2 eggs, addflour and baking powder, andmilk to thin, then the greens.Fry in a little hot oil. It’s lovelywith tomato sauce, whichshould appeal to children.’’

Kris has a tip for orangepeel. ‘‘I don’t like to throw

things away. I even ‘recycle’citrus peel! I dry the peel on aplate when using the oven.After it is dry I grate or crush itand store the ‘spice’ in anairtight jar and use it in bakingto add flavour.’’

DB says, ‘‘When vegetablesbecome wilted (carrots,broccoli, lettuce, beets, celery,etc) trim the stem end slightlyand soak the limp vegetable inwarm water for an hour ormore. You will find thevegetables will become firmand fresh ready for use.’’

Green beans and romesco sauce

This sauce is absolutely divine and is fabulous with freshly picked green beans, straight from the garden.

Ingredients2 Large ripe tomatoes, cut in half1 Red chilli, seeds removed1 Garlic clove, peeled200ml Olive oil1 Red capsicum, roasted, skin and seeds removed3 slices Ciabatta bread¼ cup Roasted hazelnuts, peeled

and crushed2 Tbsp Red wine vinegar350g Green beans, trimmed

Directions Heat oven to 180 deg C. To make romesco sauce, place tomatoes, chilli and garlic on a baking paper-lined oven tray and drizzle with 50ml olive oil. Roast for 10–15 minutes until vegetables are soft and just starting to colour. Remove from oven and place in a food processor with roasted capsicum. Blend until smooth. Lightly toast ciabatta, add half

to the vegetables and pulse to combine. Place sauce in a small stainless steel bowl, then mix in hazelnuts, remaining olive oil and red wine vinegar. Season to taste with a little salt and pepper, and set aside. Bring a medium-sized pot of water to the boil over a high heat. Add beans and blanch for 40–50 seconds. Remove beans from pot, drain and place in a serving bowl. Roughly tear remaining toasted ciabatta and scatter over beans be-fore topping with romesco sauce. Serve immediately.

FOODAngel Hair Pasta with Seared Scallops, Lemon and Chilli

The combination of seafood, lemon and chilli is always a win-ner and this simple pasta dish is complemented by the inclusion of peppery rocket.

Ingredients300g Angel hair pasta, vermielli or saghettini2 Tbsp Olive oil18 Scallops1 Red chilli, finely diced with seeds removed2 Lemons1 cup Rocket, leaves⅓ to taste Salt & freshly ground

pepper

DirectionsCook pasta in plenty of boil-ing, salted water for five to eight minutes or according to packet instructions until just tender to the bite. Drain well. At the same time, heat a frying pan, add oil, then sear scallops for 1 minute on each side until golden brown. Add chilli (diced with seeds removed), zest of one lemon and juice of two, and rocket leaves to the pan and toss briefly to warm through. Add hot drained pasta to the scallops, season with salt and pep-per, toss well and serve in pasta bowls.

Coconut jelly with pas-sionfruit

While jelly is usually associated with children’s birthday parties, there is also a whole range of sophisticated jelly desserts that are great for grown-ups.

Ingredients400ml Coconut cream300ml Cream½ cup Sugar1 tsp Vanilla essence/extract1½ tsp Gelatine8 Passionfruits

DirectionsPlace coconut cream, cream and sugar in a small saucepan over a medium heat. Stir until sugar dis-solves, then remove pan from the heat and stir in vanilla extract. Place 1/4 cup cold water in a small heat-proof bowl. Sprin-kle over the gelatine and stir to

combine. Leave for 2 minutes. Heat a small amount of water in a saucepan until simmering, then remove from heat and sit the bowl of gelatine in the pan (without getting any of the water in the bowl) until the gelatine is completely liquid. Mix the liquid gelatine into the coconut mixture. Pour the coconut mixture into four small ramekins. Re-frigerate overnight or until set. Scoop out passionfruit pulp and gently mix in a bowl until loose. Turn the coconut jelly out onto dessert plates and drizzle with

passionfruit pulp.

Tip: To help turn jellies out, sit ramekins on a warm, wet tea towel for 1 or 2 minutes, then run a knife around the edges of ramekins to loosen.

recommend the super nannyapproach of taking the childback to bed over and over, I findthis technique time consumingandmany children see it as agame.I recommend a gentle and

gradual approach, where youcommit to staying with yourchild and enjoying a relaxedbedtime routine together. Overtimework towards herbecoming comfortable andgetting used to settling to sleepwithout you there.Have a quiet wind down after

dinner, with a bath if you findthat relaxes her. Then threestories together in her bed, soshe gets calm and sleepy. At thisstage I would put some bedtimemusic on repeat or a Dinosnoreschildren’s relaxation CD to giveher something to focus on. Usinga nightlight and cuddly are veryhelpful at this age.Then lie with her as she

calms down and falls asleep.Most children of this age justwantmum or dadwith them asthey fall asleep and once youcommit to staying, theywill stopall the battling and getting up. Ifshe starts to get up, say youwillleave if she does. Over a fewnights you can start to sit on thebed, then next sit on a chair bythe bed. After a week or so youcan try a pop out: say somethinglike, “Mumwill just pop out toget a quick drink, I’ll be back in asecond” and return after about30 seconds. Gradually increasethe length and frequency of thepop outs and your daughter willfall asleep without you there.Also try little “bedtime fairy

rewards”, where a present is leftunder her pillow on the nightsshe doesn’t get out of bed.

ATHIRDof patientswho have surgery toremove canceroustumours end upwithmicroscopic pieces

left behind. These overlookedremnants can lead to therecurrence of cancer after whatwas thought to have beensuccessful surgery.Two surgeons at the

University of Pennsylvania havetried to solve this problem. Theirsolution: making tumours glow.Using a combination of

injectable dyes and high-resolution cameras, thesurgeons found away to imagetumours during surgery andmore easily identify theirmargins. They published theirfindings in the journal PLoS One.“Once you get into surgery

you’ve only got your eyes andyour hands to tell youwhere themargin of the cancer is,” saysDavid Holt, lead author of thestudy and professor of surgeryat the Penn School of VeterinaryMedicine. Tumours could bestudied before surgery withMRIs or CT scans, but theseimages were helpful only to acertain extent, he says.After an initial study inmice,

Holt used the new imagingtechnology on eight dogs withnaturally occurring lungtumours. Holt and his teaminjected the dogs withindocyanine green, a dye thataccumulates in tumoursmorethan in other tissues because oftheir leaky blood vessels. Thedye c emits light in wavelengthsthat cannot be seen by humaneyes. But when the doctorsshined a near-infrared light onthe tumours during surgery theyglowed an “Incredible Hulkgreen” on computer screenslinked to the cameras.With the help of this real-time

image, Holt couldmakedecisions about where tomakeincisions during surgery on thedogs. The successful dog studyled to approval for a humanclinical trial run by SunilSinghal, a co-author on the studyand assistant professor ofsurgery at Penn’s PerelmanSchool of Medicine.Using the same technology,

which he compared to night-vision goggles, Singhalexamined lung and chesttumours in five human patients

and the tumours fluorescedstrongly.Singhal also used this

imaging approach in anotherstudy published in theAnnals ofThoracic Surgery. In two out of18 patients with lung cancer, theimaging system helped surgeonsidentify cancer in areas that hadpreviously been undetected.Singhal is already exploring

its applications in other cancers,including breast cancer. He hasseven open clinical trials usingdyes to image tumours duringsurgery.This type of imaging does not

involve radiation, making it safeto use formost patients, evenpregnant women.But the dye Holt and Singhal

used can be detected at depths ofonly 10mm to 15mm in tissues,leaving deeper areasunexplored.Also, the dye does not

specifically bind to tumour cellsso adjacent tissues can alsocollect dye.Singhal and Holt plan to use

targeted dyes in future studiesthat aremolecularly selectivefor tumour cells as well ascontinuing to improve theircamera technology.Their work is not ready for

mass use. But Singhal hopes itwill lead tomore sophisticatedapproaches, including three-dimensional holograms oftumours generated duringsurgery. — AAP

Popularity of e-cigarettes levels off inUS

HIT: E-cigarettes can deliver a fix.

A government study in the USshows adults who have triedelectronic cigarettesmay belevelling off.The proportion of adults who

have used e-cigarettes rose fromabout 3 per cent to 8 per centfrom 2010 to 2012. But there wasno significant change last year,says the US Centers for DiseaseControl (CDC) and Preventionstudy.The study’s conclusions seem

to parallel a modest decline ine-cigarette sales during thesame period that have beennoted in analyst reports.The findings come from an

annual survey of thousands ofadults. It has been the CDC’sonly source on e-cigarette trends

since the devices started sellingin the US in late 2006.E-cigarettes are battery-

powered devices that producean odourless vapour thattypically contains nicotine, andsometimes flavourings.They are often described as a

less dangerous alternative toregular cigarettes.But e-cigarettes are not yet

regulated by the federalgovernment, and there hasn’tbeenmuch research on them.“The long-term public health

impact of these products isuncertain,” the study’s leadauthor, Brian King, says. But hecalled the levelling off in adultswho have ever tried e-cigarettes“a positive note.”The study also found the

percentage of adults who aredescribed as current e-cigarettesmokers— that is, they saidthey’d used one at least once inthe previous 30 days— has beenhovering at around 2 per cent.Roughly 75 per cent of

current e-cigarette users saidthey also smoked regularcigarettes— and that hasn’tchangedmuch in four years.That finding “raises serious

questions about whether thisproduct is really helping peoplequit”, saysMatthewMyers,president of the Campaign forTobacco-Free Kids.E-cigarettes come in a range

of shapes and sizes, andMyerssays it’s not clear if the study’sparticipants would have countedthings like “vape pens,”“e-hookahs” and “tanks” ase-cigarettes.The studywas released last

breast cancer, Roche said.The 15.7-month longer

survival timemarked “amagnitude of improvement werarely see in clinical trials inadvanced cancer”.The trial involvedmore than

800 patients with previouslyuntreated HER2-positivemetastatic breast cancer.

HER2 is a protein that makesbreast cancer cells grow. HER2-positive cancermakes up about15 to 20 per cent of breastcancers, and tends to bemoredifficult to treat.Metastatic cancer is one that

DOUBLE-UP: Combined drugs give favourable results.

A drug named Perjeta, developed by Swiss giant Roche to treat an aggres-sive form of breast cancer, has been shown to extend patients’ lives by almost 16 months, researchers say.

Patients who took Perjeta in combination with chem-otherapy and Roche’s older anti-cancer drug, Herceptin, lived for a median of 56.5 months, compared with 40.8 months for people

not on Perjeta. Adding Perjeta to treat-

The 15.7-month longer survival time marked “a magnitude of improvement we rarely see in clinical tri-als in advanced cancer”.

The trial involved more than 800 patients with previ-ously untreated HER2-posi-tive metastatic breast cancer.

HER2 is a protein that makes breast cancer cells grow. HER2-positive cancer makes up about 15 to 20 per cent of breast cancers, and tends to be more difficult to treat.

Metastatic cancer is one that has spread to other parts of the body.

Implants could spare diabetics daily injectionsDaily insulin injections for type- 1 diabetes sufferers could become a thing of the past, after scientists found it was pos-sible to produce vast quantities of insulin-producing cells for transplants.

Researchers have managed to make hundreds of millions of mature human pancreatic cells to treat diabetic mice success-fully over long periods.

The researchers believe that human clinical trials could begin within a few years with long-term, subcutaneous im-plants that would make insulin injections redundant.

Type-1 diabetes affects about 400,000 people in Britain.

Human stem cells were coaxed into becoming mature beta cells, which make the insulin hormone within the pancreas, using a cocktail of 11 chemical growth factors. Patients with type-1 diabetes lack beta cells because they are destroyed by their own immune systems.

Scientists at Harvard Uni-versity in Massachusetts, who carried out the study, say that it should be possible to produce “scalable” quantities of beta

pancreatic cells from stem cells in industrial-sized bioreactors and then transplant them into a patient.

This would result in an ef-fective cure for an illness that currently requires daily injec-tions of insulin for life. “If this scalable technology is proved to work in both the clinic and in the manufacturing facility, the impact on the treatment of diabetes will be a medical game-changer on a par with antibiot-ics and bacterial infections,” says Chris Mason, professor of regenerative medicine at Uni-versity College London.

Making industrial quanti-ties of the insulin-producing

cells of the pancreas has been a holy grail of diabetes research and many previous attempts have come close, although none has achieved quantities of the mature beta cells that could be of practical benefit to diabetic patients.

“There have been previous re-ports of other labs deriving beta cell types from stem cells, [but] no other group has produced mature beta cells as suitable for use in patients,” says Professor Doug Melton, who led the study published in the journal, Cell.

“The biggest hurdle has been to get to glucose-sensing, insulin-secreting beta cells, and that’s what our group has done,”

says Melton, who was inspired to start the research 23 years ago after his son, Sam, was diag-nosed with type-1 diabetes.

The researchers screened about 150 different chemicals and found 11 that in combina-tion could be used to coax hu-man stem cells into fully-mature beta pancreatic cells, which were found to produce reliable and meaningful quantities of insulin when transplanted into diabetic mice.

“You never know for sure that something like this is going to work until you’ve tested it nu-merous ways. We’ve given these cells three separate challenges with glucose in mice and they’ve responded appropriately,” Melton says.

In addition to offering a new form of treatment—and possibly a “cure”—for type-1 diabetes, the researchers believe it could also offer hope for the 10 per cent of type-2 diabetics who have to rely on regular insulin injections.

Melton says that the mice treated with the transplanted pancreatic cells still produce insulin many months after being injected. – Independent

blood sugar levels mid-afternoon in response to a peakof high blood sugars from lunch— the higher the peak, theharder the crash.Initially I would suggest you

look at what you’re eating anddrinking at lunch— avoidrefined carbohydrates and sugarand replace with complexcarbohydrates (whole grainsrather thanwhite) together withfiber and protein. Though it’stempting, try to avoid caffeine

and other stimulants either atlunch ormid-afternoon as thiscompounds the problem.Watchout for fruit juices too which arehigh in fructose (any thing with“ose” at the end of it is a type ofsugar!).Drink plenty of water, take

regular breaks and invest in agoodmultivitamin. Getting outfor a 20-minute walk during theday for fresh air is great as well,especially after lunch as that canhelp stabilise blood sugarsmorequickly.If this continues youmay

want to take a chromiumsupplement at lunchtime toreduce the blood sugar peak.I would also suggest if it

continues that you should askyour GP or naturopath to testyour blood glucose levels(HbA1c) as an initial check fordiabetes.This test gives an indication

onwhere your blood sugarlevels have been for the past fewmonths. If the results are hightheymay send you for a followup test called a GlucoseTolerance Test (GTT) which

measures your blood sugarlevels before, during and afterconsuming a sugary drink to seehow quickly your body canprocess the sugar.

pain just two days after surgery,while others didn’t report theirpain wasmostly gone until 36days later. To learn why, theresearchers looked to immunecells that are behind theinflammation that always occurswith a wound. To find andmapthe activity of key players, theyturned to the lab of Stanfordimmunology professor GarryNolan, who helped develop atechnology that measuresdozens of features of individualimmune cells simultaneously.The discovery: Patients’

blood shows an immunesignature of recovery thataccounts for much of theirvariability in recovery time— apattern of activity in certainimmune cells that are firstresponders to the injury site, theresearchers reported in ScienceTranslationalMedicine.If that particular reaction is

controlled in the first 24 hoursafter surgery, patients recoverfaster. But when that reactionincreases instead, patientsrecovermore slowly, Angstsays.“Wewere surprised,” that

such an early reaction set thestage for recovery, he says.But it makes sense, he added:

Inflammatory processes initiatehealing but “you have to keepthem on a leash and dwindledown efforts,” because toomuchinflammation harms.The goals are to create a

blood test that could tell who ismore likely to experience aprotracted recovery and to hunttreatments that might alter theimmune reaction to help.

Red Cross’ Cross Town Shuttle is a volunteer-run service providing transport for people in Christchurch without transport of their own and unable to use public transport. Volunteer drivers and assistants take people to medical appointments and leisure activities, helping to combat social isolation and allow people to continue to lead full lives, regardless of the impact imposed by road works and post-earthquake infrastructure repairs.

With plans to expand the service, Red

Cross needs more volunteer drivers and more volunteers to help with community outreach and door-knocking. Red Cross volunteers are a diverse bunch of people who come from a wide range of backgrounds.

Before Anthony Seumanutafa was a volunteer on the Cross Town Shuttle, he used the service to help him get across the city. “I find it to be a good way to help and socialise with people, and a way to say thank you to all those for their help – three for the price of one.”

This desire to help is what unites volunteers, says Christine Williams, outreach volunteer.

“We are able to give time, empathy, a listening ear and often some contact numbers for further assistance to enable the person we visit to continue to move forward.”
