Well, I still feel a little strange calling myself the President of anything, much less the President of a group of talented women who know a lot more than I do about this particular organization. However, after five months, I feel as if I am learning - I know some names, I know even more faces, and I know some of the background leading up to the present day in the life of our Guild.

We’ve just had our Quilt Show - after a LOT of hard work and wonderful leadership—and I know some of you even better now. Getting together, spending time and effort working toward a common goal is one of the best ways to form community. And what did I learn about the members of my community via the Quilt Show? Well, I learned that everyone pitched in on any task that needed to be accomplished. I learned that our leadership was flexible when something went “off-plan.” I learned that graciousness was an overall characteristic of everyone. And I learned that Mark and Jane have the coolest truck.

Of course, I learned much more and so much of what I learned wouldn’t have happened if I hadn’t been asked to be President. Because being President meant that I became involved in this Guild - really involved. And it is through participation that we become connected. There are hard moments, of course, but my - hope and goal - remains that, as we get to know each other, we will learn more about the ongoing activities and projects that define us as a Guild. And we also celebrate our individual specialness. (And those INFJ’s KNOW what I’m talking about!).

Western North Carolina Quilt Guild Meeting - May 18, 2017

President Judy Heyward called the meeting to order and welcomed the following guests: G. Ann Atkins, Susan Brown, Valerie Burgess, Carole Carter, Kathleen Crowell, Carmen Engler, Diane Mullins and Linda Sokalski.

Judy stated there are still handbooks available for new members; contact your area rep if membership books are needed. She is preparing a listing of the new members that will be distributed soon.

Judy reminded members that details about our many activities can be found on the website and in the Grain-lines. Deadline for newsletter items is always the weekend after the Guild meeting.

Table runners that are being donated to Habitat can still be brought in until the Fall. Jeri Schneider talked about the Retreat at Bonclarken to be held August 21-24 at the Founders Hall. There

will be daily free programs available or members can sew on their own. Cost is $15 a day and money will be collected at the June and July guild meetings.

Jane Kennedy thanked everyone who worked on the quilt show making it a great success. Ninety members helped, there were 884 attendees and the raffle quilt netted $1,650 for the scholarship fund.

Becky Reid asked for volunteers to teach sewing skills to women at SafeLite. Sheila Solen stated that the Board had voted to join Quilts of Valor & she provided some history about the

organization. The quilts are a “thank you for your service” showing that someone cares. The quilter makes the top, Quilts of Valor does the quilting and returns the quilt for backing & binding.

Pat Yurick spoke about the Scholarship Committee stating the Guild provides a sewing machine and $500 a year for deserving students who apply.

The fund raiser planned for the Mountain State Fair will be smaller items to raffle rather than a large quilt. Mary Anne Patrie encouraged members to volunteer in the fall to help in the schools on Wednesday

afternoons helping children learn about quilting with easy projects. After Show & Tell and a break the program was introduced by Didi Salvatierra, Out of the Trunk and Off

the Tables by Mary Kerr. Afternoon workshop followed. Bonnie Hartel, Secretary

Western NC Quilters Guild Board Meeting - May 12. 2017

Judy Heyward called the meeting to order at 10 am with the following members present: Jane E. Kennedy, Bonnie Hartel, Linda Voltz, Jeri Schneider, Hardy Chandler, Kathy Grogan, Kay Thomas, Bonnie Lucas, Margaret Wills, Sheila Solen and Elizabeth Leff. Kathy gave the financial report from the May Quilt Show at Bonclarken. Discussion followed about publicity, the raffle quilt and location. A motion was made and unanimously approved to reserve Bonclarken for the quilt show in May 2019.

It was recommended that the quilt show committee review aspects of the show (publicity, programs, raffle quilt, survey results, etc.) for suggestions for next time.

Jeri talked about the retreat planned for Aug 21-24 at Bonclarken. Judy volunteered to provide a one day class, Sheila and Hardy also volunteered. The intent is to increase attendance; Jeri will present this at the May Guild meeting.

Sheila discussed Quilts of Valor and is coordinating with the American Legion, VFW & Veteran’s Hospital for best distribution of the quilts. After some discussion a motion was made and approved for the Guild to join Quilts of Valor. Sheila will present this at the Guild meeting.

Margaret Wills stated that the theme for National Quilt Day on March 17, 2018 will be Feline Friends using black fabric. The Blue Ridge Mall refused to host the event so we will use the Henderson County Library. Margaret will present the new theme in June.

Bonnie Cunningham came in briefly and encouraged attendance at the workshop following the guild meeting next Thursday.

A discussion followed about the distribution of the membership funds. We ran out of Guild membership books in April and the membership has increased significantly, especially with the quilt show. A second printing that would include the new members will be brought up to the membership.

Bonnie Hartel asked that members who have keys to the storage unit who are no longer on the board turn their keys into her. It was also agreed that 7 years of minutes and treasurer’s reports was adequate to maintain in storage.

There was no representative from the Scholarship Committee but it was felt that it needs to be made an official committee in the guild book with defined guidelines. It was also recommended that 2 people oversee its operation. Judy will e-mail Francia Tartar and Kathy Grogan about this.

Judy read an e-mail from Dawn Kucera about the Guild Christmas Party. The Board agreed to move the date to the second Tuesday in December, the 12th, and will bring up the type meal and location at the guild meeting. The meeting adjourned at 11:45am.

Next Board meeting will be August 11, 10 am at Grace Lutheran Church

Focus on Area 8 Area 8 meets on the 4th Thursday at 10:00 a.m. at Grace Lutheran Church on Blythe Street. The two leaders are Hardy Chandler and Kris Kinigson. They’ve been work-ing hard this year to have a diversified list of activities. Last month, several of the group members presented an interesting program on fabrics and fabric art from oth-er countries, including ones that expressed the sadness and loss of living in a dicta-torship in South America.

The quilt photo in this picture is of Egyptian fabric art. And there was also beautiful antique lace from France. It was truly a

“world” exhibit of fine crafts.

This month (May) there will be demos on how to enlarge photos to create even larger wallhangings. And further into the year, there will be a hand-dyeing day as well as a field trip and a mini-workshop on machine quilting 2017 Quilt Show

THANKS FOR A JOB WELL DONE

The Quilt Show 2017 was a great success thank to the efforts of the entire WNCQG. The entire guild not only created fabulous quilts for display, but filled committee responsibilities, volunteered hours of service, and encouraged husbands, friends and family members to help in some manner. A full report will come later, but here are a few high-lights.

Not enough has been said about the creative endeavors and unbelievable art work shown in each quilt that you produced and displayed at the show. You outdid yourselves in the ideas, and workmanship in each piece - small or large.

We had 199 quilts displayed, 884 admission tickets sold at the door, approximately 1,650 raffle tickets sold, 90 plus WNCQG members and 8 husbands and family members volunteered during the two days, great vendors who from outside word . . . did well, and record sales were taken in at the Quilt Shop.

HOW GREAT WAS THAT??? And to top it all off, one of our new members, Bonnie Kain, won the beautiful raffle quilt. Again, thanks for time, effort, energy and willingness to help. Jane G Kennedy

The WNCQG has six Quilts of Valor (QOV) that were created by members and were displayed at the Quilt Show. We will be awarding these to deserving members of the armed forces and veterans soon. Awarding QOVs is a very touching ceremony where recipients are wrapped in our quilts and we express our gratitude for their service.

The Mission of the Quilt of Valor Foundation (QOVF) is to cover service members and veterans touched by war with com-forting and healing Quilts of Valor.

The Guild is joining the QOVF. This will allow guild members to also join QOVF for $5 annually instead of $20. Membership entitles you to make quilt tops and have them quilted by QOVF long-armers. They are returned to you for binding and awarding. Of course you can do your own quilting.

We are just starting to get organized now. Expect more details going forward. There will be an opportunity to sign up for QOVF starting at the June meeting.
