Before that happens, he looks forward to seeing you all at our 51st Annual Meeting in Anchorage, Alaska. I hope you will be able to join us for excellent educational programming and a chance to catch up with your colleagues from around the West. Our Education Committee, spearheaded by Brian Huffman, has lined up two and a half days of great programs, including a hands-on preconference on AllStAR benchmarking. This is a great opportunity for those of you who have been unable to attend the AllStAR workshops at AALL to learn about this useful tool. The main conference is packed with fantastic programs as well, including presentations on cybersecurity awareness, Native Alaskan law, Blockchain, and more. In addition to terrific programs, there will be terrific food! And art! The Local Arrangements Committee has organized a wonderful opening reception at the Anchorage Museum. Attendees will enjoy local seafood while admiring the Alaska and Art of the North collections. On Friday night, conference attendees are invited to join dine-arounds at some of Anchorage’s most popular restaurants. Although it’s not one of the dine-around options, I encourage you to pop by F Street Station if you have a chance, if only to marvel at (and sample) the giant block of cheese on the bar. Registration for the Annual Meeting is now open; you’ll find the registration form and additional information about the conference on the WestPac website. The early bird registration deadline is August 27th, so if you haven’t registered already, please do so soon. I encourage you to sign up for the optional excursions as well, especially if you’re hoping to catch a glimpse of Alaskan wildlife. On Saturday afternoon, there’s a Scenic City Tour, with the potential for moose-spotting, and on Sunday, there’s a visit to the Alaska SeaLife Center and a Kenai Fjords cruise to wildlife hot spots on Resurrection Bay, where you stand a good chance of spotting whales, sea otters, sea lions, porpoises, seals, bald eagles, or puffins. Because of the rental cost of the tour bus to Seward, we need at least twenty people to sign up for the Sunday excursion by August 29th, so don’t delay! Finally, I’d like to thank everyone who attended the WestPac Business Meeting at AALL. In addition to the usual WestPac business, the meeting included a presentation by Steve Roses on new content now available on HeinOnline. Despite the logistical mix-up and the noise level in the restaurant, I hope you all had a great time catching up with your fellow members. I’d also like to thank the committee chairs and officers for their reports and Rob Truman for volunteering to take the meeting minutes. It has been a pleasure serving as WestPac President this past year. I hope to see many of you in Anchorage at the end of September! Hilary Hardcastle WestPac News Summer 2018 Volume 41, No. 3

President’s ColumnGreetings WestPac Members! Between San Francisco’s summer fog and Berkeley’s wildfire haze, Willie is more than ready to relocate to Hawaii.

It has been a pleasure serving as WestPac President this past year. I hope to see many of you in Anchorage at the end of September!

Nominations for Life MembersThe WestPac Membership Committee has received two nominations for life membership. Our chapter bylaws provide that to qualify for life membership, the nominee must:

1) have been an active member of the chapter for ten or more years;2) have reached the age of 55 years or older; and3) have retired from active law library work.

A benefit of life membership is the waiver of annual dues. Additional information may be found on our website.

Kathy FaustNominated by Robert Truman, Interim Associate Dean and Director, Paul L. Boley Law Library, Lewis & Clark Law School

Kathy Faust earned her B.A. in German from Lewis & Clark College and her M.L.S. from the University of Wisconsin at Madison. After graduation she joined Illinois State University as Cataloging Librarian. In 1978 Kathy began her almost 40-year tenure at the Paul L. Boley Law Library of Lewis & Clark Law School, first as Cataloging Librarian and then as Assistant Director for Technical Services. Kathy also spent 6 months at the University of Otago in Dunedin, New Zealand as part of a job exchange and was responsible for cataloging serials and law materials. Always an avid supporter of WestPac and AALL, Kathy served in various WestPac offices and committees for almost all of her four decades in law librarianship. She served in similar position in TS-SIS, OBS-SIS, and various regional and national library consortia and special interest groups throughout her career. As for non-library accomplishments, Kathy has traveled the world on hiking trips, traversed the rivers of the northwest on dragon boats, visited untold numbers of concert and theater halls, and for years cared for an antique harpsichord. Kathy retired from librarianship in February 2018.

Stephanie MidkiffNominated by Angus Nesbit, Law Reference Librarian, John E. Jaqua Law Library, University of Oregon

Stephanie Midkiff earned her BA, JD and MLS degrees from the University of Kentucky. She began and ended her law library career at University of Oregon’s John E. Jaqua Law Library, serving as Law Reference Librarian from 1997 to 2017. Previously, she served as Legal Counsel for the Kentucky Legislative Ethics Commission, and as a staff attorney for the Kentucky Court of Appeals. At the University of Oregon, Stephanie supervised the law library’s reference services, served on numerous UO Libraries and university committees, and shared her research expertise with faculty, students, and various professional groups including WestPac. Stephanie’s expertise with Oregon legislative history was shared in published works by both AALL and the Oregon Law Institute. She also co-authored A Survey of Oregon State Legal and Law-Related Documents (AALL/GDIS, 2009) with fellow WestPac colleague Wendy Hitchcock, and presented as a speaker at the 2015 Annual Meeting. Stephanie remained very active in WestPac throughout her library career, serving on most of the chapter’s committees and – for several continuous years - as chapter Secretary.

WestPac Business Meeting LuncheonAALL Annual Meeting & Conference, Baltimore, MarylandMeeting Minutes, July 15, 2018

The minutes the Boise meeting on October 29, 2017 were approved.

AnnouncementsThe Board commissioned a Lewis and Clark law student with strong design skills to design a new conference poster. It’s on display in the AALL Exhibits Hall. Brian Huffman will assume possession of it after the meeting.

AALL announced that it was going to begin charging chapters to host their listservs, so Brian Huffman has set up a new discussion list for WestPac using Google Groups. We will transition to it sometime over the next few months, as our current listserv will shut down on November 1.

Thank you to Hein and Steve Roses for sponsoring our Business Meeting Luncheon

Financial Report (Ning Hang)Ning Han could not be at the luncheon, but her report was distributed among the membership. In summary: we are doing well.

Secretary’s Report (Jill Sturgeon) There was no report from the WestPac Secretary.

Committee Reports

Government Relations (David McFadden)Utah has enacted UELMA. The Council of California County Law Libraries has worked to provide $16.5M for county law libraries.

Archives (Jacque Jurkins)There have been no additions to the WestPac archives since the last business meeting.

Education (Brian Huffman) The programming for the WestPac Annual Meeting in Anchorage has been completed and distributed at the luncheon and online to the membership. We have an exciting lineup of speakers and programs. In addition to the usual 1.5 days of programs, there will be a preconference workshop on ALLStAR benchmarking. Registration is now open. Members are encouraged to get their reservations in as Wednesday’s rooms may already be booked. The Local Arrangements Committee may arrange a backup hotel if necessary.

Grants and Awards (Stacey Gordon) There were no applicants for the AALL Annual Meeting travel grant, so the Board voted to use the money to fund three $1000 grants for this year’s WestPac Annual Meeting: two travel grants and the D.J. Morrison Grant.

Membership (Hilary Hardcastle reported for the Committee)Membership currently consists of 120 active, associate, and student members and 34 life members for a total of 154 members. The Membership Committee would like to update the numbers reported last October (WestPac in Boise) which should have stated 109 active members and 33 life members. The numbers above reflect 12 new members since our membership year began in January.

During the annual WestPac meeting in Boise, members unanimously approved Laura Orr for life membership. The Membership Committee has solicited nominations for life membership to be voted on at the WestPac meeting in Anchorage.

Nominations & Elections (Hilary Hardcastle reported for the Committee)The Nominations and Elections Committee worked with the Board to find an interim Secretary and to find candidates for Vice-President/President Elect and Secretary for the annual election. On February 14 the committee issued a call for nominations. On February 26 the committee submitted the candidate names to the Board. Kerry Fitz-Gerald from Seattle University School of Law was selected to run for Vice-President/President Elect and Jill Sturgeon from the University of Colorado Law School was selected to run for Secretary. The election was held in May.

Public RelationsNo report.

Site Selection (Dennis Sears) The committee, along with the Executive Board, is reviewing the site selection process in light of the fact that we have no current members from Western Canada.

Local Arrangements (Buck Sterling)The Local Arrangements Committee have arranged a wonderful conference in Anchorage. The venue will be the Hotel Captain Cook (same as the 2002 meeting) and there will be optional excursions on Saturday and Sunday following the conference. Nearby hotels for Wednesday night will be provided on the Annual Meeting website. Meals in the Hotel Captain

Cook will be two breakfasts, one lunch, and breaks. The opening reception is at the Anchorage Museum, which was completely made over since 2002. We will meet in the Atrium, there will be salmon, and we will have access to the Art Museum. Other highlights: There will be five dine-arounds. Newsletter (Megan Austin and David McClure via email) The editors wish to thank everyone for their contributions and timely submissions to WestPac News, and they ask you to keep them coming! They are always looking for new content and ideas, whether they be insightful, humorous, or both! They will start work on the next issue soon, so please keep an eye on the WestPac listserv for the next submission deadline. Long-time editor Harriet Zook published her final edition of WestPac News this past December. They will miss her creativity and extensive historical WestPac knowledge, but will strive to maintain the strong WestPac News tradition she helped establish. State News

From Idaho….

I often think that I do not have news for WestPac. However, after careful consideration of my current projects, I realized that the following are indeed newsworthy! Our ancient catalog for the Information Center is undergoing conversion to another product, BookSystems’ Atriuum. Our initial catalog was purchased in 2000 (Winnebego Spectrum) which then converted to InfoCentre about 10 years ago (and was acquired by Follett along the way). We are long overdue for this change. I looked at many excellent ILS products in recent years. In the end, we finally determined that Atriuum will suit our needs. The current catalog sits on a server outside of the cloud the firm moved to in June 2016, so this move to Atriuum is something I have been looking forward to for over a year – I will once again be able to include its link on our intranet! Our firm is once again planning a “Training Fair.” This is an opportunity for our different departments to highlight certain aspects of the services and technology we provide to our attorneys and non-legal staff.  It was an annual event from 2009-2015, but we took a hiatus for a few years. Given our recent growth from small/medium law firm to large law firm we recognized we have many new attorneys and staff who would benefit from our Training Fair, so we’re bringing it back in October for the Boise Office. Right now we are in our final planning stage; however, once it occurs, I will be able to provide a follow-up for a future WestPac newsletter. We have some great ideas and “giveaways” planned for our booths. Departments participating in this include: Accounting; Human Resources; Information Center (Library); IT; Litigation Support; Marketing; Office Services (Copy Center, Runners, Word Processing). We are looking forward to a fun and educational time with our “Welcome to our Virtual Reality” themed event. On August 16th, the firm’s non-legal staff had its regular Quarterly Insights meeting where we learn about firm developments, celebrate milestones, and provide personal and work-related updates. At the meeting, I submitted the picture above – the Westlaw stuffed husky dog I received at AALL a few years ago. He is wearing one of my many pairs of el cheapo/easy to lose peepers and is enjoying my mocha coffee from Alia’s Coffeeshop (which is located right across the street from our office. Everyone there knows my name. Perhaps I go too often…..).   Regards, Alison PerryHawley Troxel

WestPac Q&A: Shawn Nevers

1. What is the best advice you ever received about working as a law librarian?

I'm not sure it's exactly advice, but when deciding if this was really the profession for me I talked to a number of law librarians who told me that this was the greatest profession on earth and that they loved their job. That encouragement helped me make the decision to become a law librarian and I've never regretted it.

2. What is your favorite app?

Having just completed a nearly 7,000 mile car trip across the country and back with my family, I'm going to have to go with the standard "Maps" app. Boring but functional.

3. What book title best represents your day-to-day work life? I'll go with "Oh, The Thinks You Can Think."  (Having six children I can never get too far away from Dr. Seuss.) I love law librarianship because of the variety of things I get to think about and help others think about on a daily basis.

4. If money was not an issue, what new library service would you offer in your library?

I would love to be able to provide more off-campus electronic resource access to our alumni. This would require not only money, but vendor cooperation.

5. What have you enjoyed the most from being involved with WestPac?

Western law libraries are so spread out compared to those in the East that it's difficult to get together regularly. I love the chance to get to know my law librarian neighbors through WestPac.

Shawn Nevers is the Deputy Director of the Howard W. Hunter Law Library at Brigham Young University's J. Reuben Clark Law School where he teaches introductory and advanced legal research and helps manage the day-to-day operations of the library. Shawn has an MLIS from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and a JD from BYU Law School.

AALL Call for Proposals

INNOVATING THE PROFESSIONLaw librarians are working to assert their roles in the rapidly changing and ever-expanding world of legal information management through the connections they make, and the trust and accountability that truly authentic interpersonal connections can foster. By capitalizing on our strengths, we can propose new initiatives or programs, have difficult—but essential—conversations about tough topics, and motivate others to truly shine and succeed. Programming will be designed to give librarians the tools to affirm their integral place in the greater legal community.

What are your “must-haves” to do your job better and raise the profile of the profession? Explore our resources for program proposers, see our Call for Proposals, and propose a program by October 1!
