This bridge is typical of the engineering practice of the early 20th century. By that time, two basic truss designs -- the Warren and Pratt -- had replaced the variety which characterized the 19th century, and riveted construction had become nearly universal. In its extremely light members, narrow width, and wooden deck, this bridge embodies proportions and structural elements typical of town highway bridges before the advent of substantial motor vehicle usage. Also, the bridge was partly assembled with bolted connections, a common practice where erection crews might be inexperienced in field riveting. American Bridge Company was the country's largest fabricator upon its formation in 1900, and a major supplier of Vermont bridges. United Construction, based in Albany, N.Y., won many contracts in Vermont, always on bridges fabricated by American Bridge. This lucrative cooperation for the most part ended after American Bridge reorganized in 1914.
