Entry at 13+
REGISTRATION
The first step in the entry process is to register your son. A boy should be registered by the end of Year 5 (the academic year of his 10th birthday). If you have not received a registration form, please telephone the 13+ Admissions Administrator on 020 7963 1003 or email registrar@ westminster.org.uk. Registration forms can also be downloaded from our website: www.westminster.org.uk.
VISITING THE SCHOOL
The best time to visit the School is while your son is in Year 5. To arrange a visit please telephone the Admissions Assistant on 020 7963 1003. Every year there are three 13+ Open Afternoons and there are also regular tours of the school in groups of no more than five families.
MEETING AND ASSESSING THE CANDIDATE
While a candidate is in Year 6 we decide whether to offer him a conditional place. We do this by gathering information of different kinds.
PRE-INTERVIEW TESTS
The first stage is for the candidate to take some tests in Mathematics, English and Reasoning. Westminster School uses the Independent Schools Examinations Board (ISEB) Common Pre-Tests.
For more information about these tests please refer to the ISEB website: http://www.iseb.co.uk/pretests.htm. Boys take the tests at their prep schools during October or November. They are online tests for which no special preparation is needed. Raw scores are adjusted to take account of a boy’s date of birth so younger candidates are not disadvantaged. It is usually possible for overseas candidates to take the tests at their own schools. However, if there is a problem we can arrange for the boy concerned to take the tests at Westminster. Boys who attend primary schools should be registered for 11+ entry to Westminster Under School (see page 5) – the system described above is for boys who can remain at their prep schools until they are thirteen.
INTERVIEW
Candidates who have performed strongly in the ISEB Common Pre- Tests are invited to Westminster School for an interview and letters about this are posted to parents during December. Interviews take place during the Lent term. When a boy comes to Westminster for his interview he also takes short tests in English and Mathematics – he will spend about 90 minutes at the school.
Entry to Westminster
Every year Westminster has an intake of about 120 boys who enter Year 9 (13+ entry). About 45% come from Westminster Under School and the remainder comes from a wide range of schools. There is a further intake of 75 or so pupils who enter Year 12 (16+ entry). Most of these pupils are girls but applications from boys are also welcome. At both 13+ and 16+ pupils may apply for boarding or day places.
SCHOOL REPORT
We attach great importance to the report we receive from a candidate’s present school. Apart from information about the boy’s character, interests and potential, we also ask for information that will help us, where appropriate, to compare him with other candidates from that school.
COMMON ENTRANCE
The Common Entrance examinations are used by many independent schools. The papers are set by the Independent Schools Examinations Board. For information about syllabuses or to obtain past papers, please consult www.iseb.co.uk. Candidates sit the Common Entrance examinations at their preparatory schools. If a boy attends a school that is not prepared to act as a Common Entrance examination centre, it is the responsibility of his parents, after consultation with the ISEB, to make arrangements for him to sit the examinations at another centre.
The Common Entrance papers required for entry to Westminster:
• Mathematics Level 3
• English Level 2
• French Level 2
• Science Level 2
• Geography (including the individual field work enquiry)
• History
• Religious Studies
• Latin Level 3
THE CHALLENGE
The Challenge is the traditional name for Westminster’s scholarship examinations. These examinations have two separate objectives:
1. The means by which Queen’s Scholars, Honorary Scholars and Exhibitioners are chosen. For information about this, please read the section of this booklet entitled ‘Scholarships and bursaries’.
2. An alternative qualifying examination for boys with conditional places. Approximately 50% of candidates sit The Challenge in preference to Common Entrance and some will have indicated that they do not wish to be considered for a Queen’s Scholarship. Although syllabus content is essentially the same, Challenge papers are more demanding and stretching than Common Entrance papers.
REACHING A DECISION
We look carefully at all the information we have assembled before deciding whether to offer a conditional place. The decision to offer a boy a conditional place means that we believe he will be able comfortably to achieve the standard we require for entry when he is 13 while also enjoying a broad and varied education. It is not our intention that boys should be put under pressure and we want them to enjoy sport, music, drama and all the other activities that make school life richer and more enjoyable.
THE WAITING LIST
If we do not feel that it would be appropriate to offer a boy an immediate conditional place, we may put his name on the Waiting List. From time to time we will ask head teachers to update us on the progress of boys on the Waiting List and, in this way, boys who did not do themselves justice in the tests are given further opportunities to show us what they are capable of. A boy who is on the Waiting List may be promoted to a conditional place at any time up to the finalisation of the Common Entrance lists three months before the examinations.
WHAT DOES A CONDITIONAL PLACE MEAN?
A boy who has been offered a conditional place must still qualify for entry to Westminster School by sitting the Common Entrance examinations or our own scholarship examinations (The Challenge).
A candidate will sit these examinations during the summer term when he is in Year 8 – his final term at preparatory school. Parents who wish to accept the offer of a conditional place will be asked to pay an entrance fee of 4% of the current annual day fee. The fee is refundable only if the candidate fails to be offered a place following the Common Entrance examinations.
5WESTMINSTER SCHOOL
The decision about whether to enter a boy for The Challenge is usually made by his preparatory school. If you would like your son to sit The Challenge, it is therefore essential to discuss the matter with his present head teacher and ask him or her to counter-sign The Challenge application form. However, please bear in mind that many boys who go on to achieve great academic success at Westminster School sit Common Entrance and not The Challenge as their entrance examination. A Challenge candidate with a conditional place who fails to reach the qualifying standard will be asked to sit the Common Entrance examinations. (The Challenge examinations take place in April or May and Common Entrance in June.) All Challenge candidates sit papers in the following subjects: Mathematics, English, Science, French, Geography, History and Latin. (If a boy attends a school where Latin is not taught, please contact the Registrar for advice.)
To obtain past papers, please telephone the 13+ Admissions Assistant on 020 7963 1003.
Once the decision has been made to enter a boy for The Challenge, parents should obtain a Challenge application form from the 13+ Admissions Assistant. Please call 020 7963 1003 or email [email protected].
Entry at 11+Our 11+ entry of approximately 25 boys is designed for pupils who attend state or independent primary schools that they must leave at the end of Year 6. Boys spend two years (Years 7 and 8) at Westminster Under School and then transfer to the senior school when they are thirteen. A pupil who enters the Under School at the 11+ stage automatically has a conditional place for entry to Westminster School at 13+. A boy who is awarded a means tested bursary at 11+ is guaranteed a place at Westminster School at 13+ subject to satisfactory progress. For further information about bursaries, please consult the section entitled ‘Scholarships and bursaries’.
To register your son for the 11+ and to obtain further information about the entry process, please telephone the Under School’s Registrar on 020 7821 5788 or email [email protected]. An 11+ Open Morning is held every year in September or early October. For further information please contact the Under School.
Entry to Under School at 7+ or 8+Entry to the Under School at 7+ and 8+ is by competitive examination in the January before entry. For information, please telephone the Under School’s Registrar on 020 7821 5788 or email [email protected]. Please note that boys who enter Westminster Under School at 7+ or 8+ must be registered separately by their parents for entry to Westminster School at 13+.
Pupils joining the Sixth Form of Westminster School must be under 17 years old. The procedure for entry at 16+ is explained fully in a separate publication. To obtain a copy of this Sixth Form Entry Procedure and Course Information booklet, please telephone the Admissions Assistant on 020 7963 1003 or email [email protected]. Applications to enter the Sixth Form are welcome from both girls and boys – boarding and day places are available.
On-line registration opens in the summer one year before the date of entry and closes in early October – registration for entry in 2017 will close in October 2016. There are two open days every year, one in June and another in September. Admission is by competitive examination and interview. Candidates select the four subjects in which they are examined based on their likely A-level/Pre-U choices. Candidates may sit the examinations overseas at the British Council but they must come to Westminster School for interview on the designated day. The examination day is in early November and the interview day is at the end of that month. Offers of places are made in early December. There are no Sixth Form scholarships but means-tested day bursaries are available for candidates who live in London. For further information please look at the section entitled ‘Scholarships and bursaries’.
Entry at 16+ (Sixth Form entry) 13+ ENTRY
The decision about whether to apply for a boarding or day place does not have to be made at the time of registration. In fact, it is not unusual for the final decision to be delayed until a boy is in his final year at preparatory school. Provided that a place is available, it is also possible for a boy to switch to boarding having started at Westminster as a day boy – and the reverse is also possible.
To arrange a visit to a Boarding House, please telephone the Admissions Assistant on 020 7963 1003. Every autumn we have a Boarder Taster Evening for boys in Year 8 who hold conditional places.
There are five boarding houses for boys and all are situated around Little Dean’s Yard. One of these houses is College which is the boarding house for the Queen’s Scholars. For further information about College, please look at the section entitled ‘Scholarships and bursaries’. The four remaining houses all have between 25 and 30 boys boarding. Younger boys share rooms but a boy will usually have his own room from Year 11 onwards and certainly once he enters the Sixth Form. Day boys and girls are also members of these houses.
The Boys’ Boarding Houses:
Busby’s Housemaster: Mr Paul Botton
Grant’s Housemaster: Mr Nick Fair
Liddell’s Housemaster: Mr Teehan Page
Rigaud’s Housemaster: Dr Richard Kowenicki
If a parent expresses a preference for a particular boarding house, we will always aim to respect that choice but it is not always possible to do so.

7WESTMINSTER SCHOOL
BOARDERS FROM OVERSEAS
For boys under the age of 16 Westminster is a weekly boarding school and parents must live close enough to the school so that boys can return home at weekends or when they are unwell. Boys under 16 therefore cannot board if their parents live overseas.
We welcome boarders from overseas to join our Sixth Form although parents must be aware that most of our boarders return home every weekend and that it is not possible for boarders to remain at the school during half-term holidays or during the two ‘exeat weekends’ every term. All boarding pupils whose parents live abroad must therefore have a guardian who will take the place of his or her parents during term time. A pupil must be able to stay with his or her guardian when the school is closed and the guardian must be available at all times to discuss with members of staff any problems that may have arisen. In the event of illness or suspension from school the guardian must take the pupil into his or her home. Westminster School must be satisfied that the arrangements for a guardian are satisfactory before an application from an overseas candidate can be accepted.
APPLYING FOR A DAY PLACE
It is not customary for the parents of candidates who are applying for day places to meet housemasters during the application process. We also prefer parents not to express a preference for a particular day house unless there is a strong family connection. Our aim is, of course, to ensure that all houses have equally high standards of pastoral care and in allocating day boys and girls to houses we try to ensure that each house has among its members a similar cross-section of talents and backgrounds.
16+ (SIXTH FORM) ENTRY
A 16+ candidate who wishes to board must indicate this at the time of registration. Boarding places are available for boy and girl applicants. Boys may board in one of the four houses described in the previous section about 13+ entry. Girls can board in Purcell’s which is a girls-only boarding house with day boy pupils, or in Busby’s, Liddell’s or Grant’s, which are mixed houses with girls-only floors.
The Sixth Form open days in June and September include a tour of the boarding houses for those who are interested. It is also possible to arrange visits to boarding houses at other times. Please telephone the Admissions Assistant on 020 7963 1003 to arrange a tour.
The Girls’ Boarding Houses:
Busby’s Housemaster: Mr Paul Botton
Liddell’s Housemaster: Mr Teehan Page
Grant’s Housemaster: Mr Nick Fair
Purcell’s Housemaster: Dr Gabrielle Ward-Smith
If a parent expresses a preference for a particular house we will always aim to respect that choice but it is not always possible to do so.

QUEEN’S SCHOLARSHIPS
The Queen’s Scholars are part of Queen Elizabeth I’s Royal Foundation of the College of St Peter which encompasses both Westminster School and Westminster Abbey. They are required by the statutes to attend certain Abbey services, and have other ceremonial duties to perform in connection with the Abbey and the Crown. There are 40 Queen’s Scholars and it is usual for eight Scholars to be elected every year. Since Elizabethan times the Queen’s Scholars have resided in a boarding house known as College – the present building dates back to the early 18th century. It is a condition of a Queen’s Scholarship that the candidate should be willing to be a boarder in College. For election to a Queen’s Scholarship a candidate must be under 14 years of age on 1st September of the proposed year of entry.
The monetary value of a Queen’s Scholarship is 50% of the annual boarding fee.
THE SCHOLARSHIP EXAMINATION
Since at least the 17th century the Westminster Scholarship Examination has been known as The Challenge. For centuries it was an oral grammatical contest, but written papers were introduced in 1855. (For further information please refer to the section entitled ‘Entry at 13+’.) The examinations take place at Westminster School in late April or early May. To obtain an application form, please contact the 13+ Admissions Administrator on 020 7963 1003 or [email protected].
CANDIDATES WHO ARE NOT REGISTERED
Candidates for The Challenge need not have registered for the school, nor hold a conditional place, but in such cases a commoner place will not be offered if a Queen’s Scholarship is not awarded.
Scholarships and bursaries
What is the difference between a scholarship and a bursary? Academic and music scholarships are awarded on a strictly competitive basis and parental income is not taken into account. The system of bursaries enables Westminster School to offer free places or places at reduced fees to boys and girls who do well in our entrance examinations but whose parents cannot afford the full fees.
9WESTMINSTER SCHOOL
WHAT IS COLLEGE LIKE?
College is a relaxed and friendly boarding house and the Queen’s Scholars mix with other pupils, boarding or day, girl or boy, just like everyone else. The housemaster is Mr Mark Feltham, who also has the title of Master of the Queen’s Scholars. Every year there is a College Open Evening which gives Challenge candidates and their parents the opportunity to visit College and to meet Mr Feltham and the Scholars. We know that some boys are nervous at the prospect of boarding, even though they would go home at weekends. We would urge them not to dismiss the exciting opportunity of becoming a Queen’s Scholar until they have had a chance to see for themselves what life in College is really like.
HONORARY SCHOLARSHIPS
Challenge candidates who do not wish to be elected to a resident Queen’s Scholarship may be awarded the title of Honorary Scholar if their performance in the examination is indisputably of the calibre of a Queen’s Scholar.
EXHIBITIONS
Up to seven exhibitions (minor scholarships) may be awarded each year to those Challenge candidates who narrowly miss being awarded a Scholarship.
MUSIC SCHOLARSHIPS
Six awards of 25% of the current day fee, including free tuition on two instruments, may be awarded annually. Auditions are held in late January or early February. Candidates, who do not have to be registered or hold a conditional place, must be under 14 years of age on September 1st of the proposed year of entry and must subsequently qualify for a place by sitting either Common Entrance or The Challenge.
For further information, please telephone the Music Secretary on 020 7963 1017 or email [email protected]. Grade 7 standard on the candidate’s first instrument is usually expected and it is recommended that a candidate should have an informal audition with the Director of Music before the formal auditions take place.
Several Music Exhibitions providing free tuition on up to two instruments may also be awarded.
BURSARIES
Means-tested day bursaries of up to 100% of day fees are available at 11+, 13+ and 16+ entry. We aim to act as sensitively as possible and very few members of staff and none of the other pupils will be aware that a boy or girl is receiving financial assistance. When a full bursary is awarded, it will cover the cost of uniform, equipment and compulsory school expeditions.
To be eligible for a bursary a child and a child’s parent(s) must be a British citizen or citizens of the EEA or Switzerland AND must also live in London. Boarding bursaries are not awarded.
11+ BURSARIES
Westminster wants boys of high academic ability whose parents cannot afford the full fees to be able to come to the school. In most cases, such boys will be pupils from state primary schools. A bursary awarded to a boy at 11+ will continue until he is 18, subject, of course, to satisfactory work and behaviour.
Boys who enter the school at the 11+ stage spend their first two years (Years 7 and 8) at Westminster Under School. To register for 11+ entry and to obtain a bursary application form, please contact the Under School’s Registrar on 020 7821 5788 or [email protected]. Parents will be asked to complete an initial financial assessment form before the entrance examination.
13+ BURSARIES
At this stage bursaries are normally awarded only to candidates who already hold bursaries at their preparatory schools. Please speak to the Registrar if you would like to apply for a bursary. He will arrange for an initial financial assessment form to be sent to you. Once you have submitted the form, you will be contacted by the Bursar.
If a boy who has been awarded a bursary subsequently wins a scholarship, the monetary value of the scholarship will be absorbed within the bursary.
16+ BURSARIES
Parents who are interested in applying for a bursary should complete the initial financial assessment form, which is available as part of the online registration process. Depending on the family’s financial circumstances the Bursar may decide to exempt a candidate from payment of the registration fee. The parents of candidates who are applying for bursaries will be invited to meet the Bursar on the post-examination interview day if their son or daughter is called back for interview. Please note that it is the policy of the Governing Body that candidates for bursaries should be resident in Greater London.
SPECIAL EDUCATIONAL NEEDS
Westminster School has a well established tradition of identifying and nurturing academic potential in pupils with special educational needs including dyslexia and dyspraxia. If your son or daughter has been identified as having a specific learning difficulty, please contact the Admissions Administrator to discuss the situation. She may decide to put you in touch with our Study Skills Co-ordinator. Extra time in our entrance examinations at 13+ and 16+ will only be granted if the criteria used for public examinations are met. An up-to-date report from an educational psychologist is therefore essential.
The Governing Body of Westminster School recognises its responsibility under the Disability Discrimination Act (1995) which prevents discrimination against disabled people in their access to education.
Westminster School’s Policy on Admissions is available in full on our website: www.westminster.org.uk.

A non-returnable fee of £160 is payable on 13+ and 16+ registration. This fee is waived for the sons and daughters of Old Westminsters.
ENTRANCE FEE
An entrance fee of 4% of the current annual day fee is payable on acceptance of a conditional place. This fee is refundable only if a 13+ candidate fails to be offered a place following the Common Entrance examination or if a 16+ candidate fails to achieve the required grades at GCSE/IGCSE (at least four A* grades and 4 A grades). The entrance fee is not off-set against the final term’s fees. Parents of boys who enter Westminster Under School at the 11+ stage do not have to pay the Entrance Fee. Candidates who apply for and are awarded a bursary of 75% or more do not have to pay the entrance fee.

Accounts are rendered at the end of each term and must be paid for on or before the first day of the following term in the manner specified on the accounts form.
The Governing Body cannot undertake to remit any fees of pupils who are absent on account of illness, or for any other reason, and they draw the attention of parents to the fact that insurance facilities for covering the risk are available.
Advance Fees Scheme: A scheme exists to enable parents, grandparents and guardians to provide for future school fees by way of a composite cash payment. There are considerable tax advantages to the scheme, details of which may be obtained from the Finance Bursar, Mrs Heather Burgess: [email protected]; tel 020 7963 1030.

PRE-U In 2015 pupils at Westminster sat the Cambridge Pre-U examinations instead of A-levels in modern and classical languages, English, Art History and Art. At Westminster individual departments are allowed to choose the specifications (A-level or Pre-U) which they believe are the
most interesting to teach as well as providing the stretch needed for very able pupils. In the Pre-U examinations subjects are reported on a nine-grade scale reflecting three broad bands of achievement: Distinction 1,2,3; Merit 1,2,3; and Pass 1,2,3. The A-level A* grade is
divided into two distinction grades: D1 and D2. The Pre-U D3 grade is equivalent to the A-level A grade. The intention is to differentiate more finely as well as extending reporting at the top end. For more information please look at www.cie.org.uk.
