February 2nd, is a highly anticipated date for Groundhog Day enthusiasts. Fortunately, for us, an early spring was predicted as no shadow was seen was by Pennsylvania’s Punxsutawney Phil and Ontario’s Wiarton Willie. This winter’s crazy weather is apparently throwing off the fore-casting techniques of the tiny band of furry me-teorologists we use to predict how much winter we have left. While Nova Scotia’s Shubenacadie Sam and Quebec’s Fred beg to differ on the

subject , I am the side of the newest (and only female) member of the team, Manitoba’s Winnipeg Willow, who apparently broke the tie in favour of the veterans when she reported that she had

seen no shadow. I saw my shadow, but I don’t think it counts. If you are viewing this paper in full colour then you might be a subscriber.. unless the toner ran out. The company that I ordered it from cancelled the order because they were out of stock. This was last minute, so now I am find-ing a new source. One these days everything will run smoothly? Big events this month......February 2nd, Ground-hog Day and start of Vernon Winter Carnival. February 10th, Chinese New Year (Gung hay fat choy!). February 11th, Family Day. February 12th, Shrove Tuesday (Pancake Day) February 14th, St. Valentine's Day. February 16th, West-wold Legion Dinner.February 16th & 17th, Variety Club Telethon. Heart and Stroke Campaign all month.Wow!

On January 29th, it was announced on Radio NL that somebody in Kamloops had seen 10 male robins! Well, those boys are going to be out of the gene pool because it is WAY too early to re-turn home! Notice........no girl robins. Hmmmm.

The other day I was up at the dump.....excuse me, TNRD Recycling Depot, and was admiring the way folks were flattening boxes, washing containers, separating glass etc. for recycling. I have always considered myself the Queen of Recycling, but Jackie said there are a lot of recyclers in the valley who can give me a run for my money. They are to be congratulated for the effort they put into recycling!

I suddenly realized that most of the recycling was plastic or cardboard. That explained why we didn't have garbage dumps when I was a child........plastic hadn't been invented and we burned paper and cardboard in our wood stoves. Food scraps went to the chickens, who in turn gave us lovely brown eggs. Glass jars were valued.......many companies used heavy jars for their products that we could reuse for home canning. We saved the gallon cans that peanut butter, lard, honey etc. came in and would use them for lunch buckets, storing rice or whatever else we didn't want the mice to get into!

Our recycling skills are improving constantly, and we are way ahead of Japan, where their an-swer to the garbage dilemma is to put the day's garbage on a scow and dump it into the Pacific Ocean! No wonder there's an island, made of plastic debris, twice the size of Texas floating in that beleaguered ocean! Of course, our capital city, Victoria, still dumps its raw sewage into the ocean. Must be a thrill for the folks living in Puget Sound!

Speaking of thrills, the ice fishermen are once again having a glorious time on Monte Lake! There are dozens of people there during the week and hundreds on the weekend! Ah, winter!

The first time I met Christina Norwood several things struck me about her, other than her de-lightful British accent; I was immediately aware of her genuine warmth, her quick wit and her zest for life. I had the pleasure of talking to Christina the other day and asked her about her life as a businesswoman, wife and mother.“While in University I took German and Busi-ness Studies, which is a strange combination for someone so interested in technology, web and graphic design and SEO (search engine optimization). I started my own business here in Westwold but with two small children I prefer to work part time so that I can spend as much time with my kids as possible. Most of my work is in Kamloops but I do have some clients here as well. This past year I’ve learned that I just can’t “balance” everything; there aren’t enough hours in the day. If I tried to have balance I wouldn’t be very good at my career, being a wife or mother, so when I have a lot of work I focus on that but then I miss out on what my kids might be doing and that’s hard. I’ve recently become more physi-cally active and I try to include my kids in that too and that’s always fun for us.“My husband was always driving through West-wold and one house in particular always caught his attention. When that house came on the market we were fortunate enough to be able to buy it…..it was just meant to be. Westwold is a beautiful valley that offers the space between neighbours that I didn’t have in the South Lon-don, England, and being centrally located be-tween Kamloops and Vernon, and not too far from Kelowna, where my husband does a lot of work, it’s the perfect location for us. The people are friendly and it’s a strong, supportive and reli-able community; people are always willing to lend a hand here. Shortly after we moved to Westwold we were at the Legion and saw a copy of the WestMont news. Eva Harvey was also at the Le-gion and we got talking about the paper. I offered to help; my way of contributing to the community, I suppose.. I don’t ever see us leaving this valley

because we are so happy and at home here, and I would love for my boys to grow up in Westwold because of the community it is.”In this day and age it’s refreshing to speak to someone who is so upbeat and positive, and her beautiful accent, twinkling eyes and captivating smile aren’t too hard to take either. Christina is a woman who wears many different hats, but I must say, she wears them all equally well!

Linda’s Tax Tips

Here is some information to help you under-stand your Tax return.

Tax Credits Tax credits are deductions you may be able to claim when you complete and submit your income tax return. Tax credits can be based on income, investments, training or education, activities you’re involved in, expenses you incur or the work that you do.

Refundable and Non-Refundable Tax Credits Tax credits can be refundable or non-refund-able. Refundable tax credits will reduce your taxes owing and if the credit is higher than the combined federal and B.C. income taxes you owe, you’ll receive the difference as a refund.

For example, the B.C. training tax credit is a re-fundable tax credit. If you owe $1,000 in income taxes and your B.C. training tax credit is $2,500, your taxes owing will be reduced to zero and you'll receive a refund of $1,500.

Non-refundable tax credits will only reduce your B.C. taxes owing to zero, but won’t provide a refund even if the total of the credits is higher than your B.C. taxes owing.

For example, the political contributions tax credit is a non-refundable tax credit. If you owe $100 in income taxes and your political con-tributions tax credit is $500, your taxes owing will be reduced to zero but you won’t receive a refund of $400.

Basic Tax Credits Some tax credits are available to everyone as long as the credit is applicable to the person’s particular situation. For these basic tax credits, you apply for the credit by completing the relat-ed line on your income tax return and attaching any required supporting documents.

The deadline for making contributions to your RRSPs for the 2012 tax year is Friday March 1, 2013. That gives you just 1 month. Cont on Pg 7

BC HST Credit (BCHSTC) A non-taxable BC HST credit is paid quarterly with the GST/HST and low income climate ac-tion tax credits, to offset the impact of the HST on those with low incomes. This will be discontinued due to the elimination of the HST. The final quar-terly BC HST payment will be issued in January 2013.

The month of February is designated heart month and our ears and eyes are filled with information for a healthy heart. Canvassers are looking for donations for heart research and media ads tell us how to care for our heart. This information should be heeded, and not just in February, but on a daily basis. It could be boiled down to two concepts; input, output.The input of food and drink and output of mus-cular exertion helps determine a healthy, or unhealthy heart.Good heart. Bad heart. These well known facts are given to us by government, nurses and doc-tors, but ultimately the decision is ours. We’re told: Live hard die young, Live smart live long.I would also like to consider the heart in a dif-ferent light, a spiritual light. The spiritual heart is very much like the physical heart. It’s health depends on input and output. What we put into our heart, what we hear or watch, affects the output of our heart; good or bad.If we consume unwholesome food we end up with a bad physical heart. If we watch or hear unwholesome input we end up with a bad spiri-tual heart. There is a saying, “You are what you eat.” The same is true spiritually. “You are what you take in.”Doctors rely on medical journals to find ways we can develop healthy hearts. Spiritually, we have God’s Journal, The Bible, to provide us the way to a healthy heart that will last eternally. Jesus teaches us in Luke 6:45 “The good man brings good things out of the good stored up in his heart, and the evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in his heart. For out of the overflow of his heart, his mouth speaks.”Whether physical or spiritual, the input to a heart has a great influence on the output. Therefore, may you find healthy input for both of your hearts. God bless and Happy Valentine’s Day.
