‘Creepy House’ Summer Reading ChallengeFrom July 13th until September, children can choose any books to read from the thousands of titles held in libraries. Once signed up, children are challenged to read six books over three visits to the library. As they progress through the three stages of the reading challenge they can discover the secrets and discover the hair-raising residents of the Awful Upstairs, The Gruesome Ground Floor and The Spine-tingling Cellar.

Children will receive a bookmark and their own Creepy House poster with three sets of stickers to collect. All materials are free and subject to availability. Every child who reads six books and completes the challenge by 14 September 2013 receives a certificate and medal. Children who finish can also be entered into a free Libraries West Prize Draw, sponsored by Peters Bookselling Services, with the chance to win a Kobo eReader or their age in books.

The Creepy House Summer Reading Challenge was launched at a special event in the Town Hall on 13th July. Other events being held in libraries in the summer include storytelling by Michael Loader at Clevedon and Worle Libraries on 7 August and Nailsea and Portishead Libraries on 12 August. These events must be booked and paid in advance as spaces are limited. Please contact your local library for more details, costs and how to book.

There is also an interactive Creepy House website www.creepy-house.org.uk created by the Reading Agency.

The Summer Reading Challenge, organised nationally by the Reading Agency, is an immensely popular and successful national annual reading initiative. The Reading Agency is an independent charity working to inspire people to read more.

More than 4000 children joined the challenge in North Somerset libraries last year, which is now in its 15th year. The challenge helps children to maintain their reading motivation during the school holidays.

Comments from children who participated in last year’s challenge, called ‘Story Lab’, included “It was cool and fun and I loved it. I love getting my gold medal at the end. I love going in to school to show them I did it.”

Comments from parents included ”We all really enjoyed the Story Lab challenge, it made reading as a family really fun” and “A great way to get kids reading and enjoying books. Fantastic!”

Free wi-fi in librariesFree wi-fi will be available in every library across North Somerset from 1 August.This will allow customers to bring their own laptops and other devices into their local library to use the internet, creating more opportunities for free computers for other users and attract new customers along the way. Wi-fi will be available to everyone by simply visiting any library during opening hours and scanning for the signal. There will be no need to book and visitors do not need to be a library member to set-up an account. For first time users, customers will need to speak to a member of staff to set-up an account. Once they have done this they can continue to use any libraries in North Somerset. Wi-fi will not be available in the mobile library. It will also make it easier for customers to go online with their own wireless enabled devices, access council services and conduct their own online research. The railway runs its steam trains over 20 miles of line through the Quantock Hills and along the coast between Bishops Lydeard (4 miles from Taunton) and Minehead.

Trains run every day until October 6th and then on selected dates until the end of the year.

Apart from Minehead, the 10 stations along the route offer a wide variety of things to see and do.

For walkers Crowcombe Heathfield and Stogumber are in the heart of the Quantocks.

Watchet station sits in the centre of the old harbour town with its narrow streets, small shops, places to eat and pair of museums whilst Washford station is the home of the Somerset & Dorset Railway Trust and a 15 minute walk from Cleeve Abbey. The Abbey is now in the care of English Heritage and WSR passengers can obtain discounted admission by showing their tickets.

A similar discount can be obtained at Dunster Castle which overlooks the medieval village or on Wednesdays and Saturdays there is an inclusive Dunster Castle Express outing from Bishops Lydeard.For normal train travel, on the West Somerset, passengers can simply come to the stations and buy their tickets at the booking office OR from the Ticket Inspectors on the trains.

Looking into October the Autumn Steam Gala is always a popular event and this years, will look to recreate the atmosphere of the ‘Cambrian’ section of British Railways, putting the clock back to the late 1950’s, early 1960’s in Mid Wales. Alfred Leete (1882-1933) was proud to regard Weston-super-Mare as his home town. In its turn the town should be proud to recognise him as one of its most noteworthy sons.

Alfred was born in Northamptonshire in 1892, a year later the family moved to Weston due to his father’s ill health.

Due to the boom in the holiday industry his parents

opened up a boarding house, and later a hotel called LEETES. Alfred was educated at Kingsholm School in Arundal Road, from his early years he had shown an interest in drawing, which eventually led him to having them published in The Bristol Magpie.

He then moved to London to try to find success. He had a small amount of his drawings published, but found times hard.

Various jobs followed from a designer in a furniture factory, to drawing seaside postcards (which have in themselves, become famous).

The First World War, was to bring him everlasting fame at a time when he was drawing for a number of London papers and magazines – Punch, Tatler, Sketch, Bystander and of course, London Opinion.

On 5th September 1914 the front of London Opinion bore an historic cover. The well known face of Kitchener, hero of Khartoum, his eyes steady, right arm and pointing finger outstretched, bore the legend ‘Your Country Needs You”.’

The signature was the unmistakeable one in small capitals, with the word ‘T’ of Alfred Leete.

So the great poster was born. Kitchener’s commanding face and almost accusing finger was the spur that caused men in their thousands to join the army. An unkind remark at the time was that Kitchener was a poor general but a wonderful poster. Whatever his fighting skills, the Kitchener poster was the best that has ever been drawn and even today is used and recognised the world over.

Later in the Great War, the Americans copied it substituting ‘Uncle Sam’ for Kitchener, but the initial impact of the great general was never lost.

In the Second World War it was copied again, with Winston Churchill’s grim face in place of the original, but it never had the same appeal.

We’ve all seen how iconic the governmental World War II poster ‘KEEP CALM AND CARRY ON’ has become. It has been changed, re-worded and distorted for comic affect, but even with all these manipulations, the original motivational message still gets through.

The original piece was a statement; created to convey a strong message in dark times. However, it was by no means the first piece of motivational imagery that truly captured the imagination of the populace.

That has to be Alfred Leete’s ‘YOUR COUNTRY NEEDS YOU!’ poster, of 1914.

The original poster was so powerful that men volunteered for the army in their thousands.

28295 Ernest Henry Gillett was born in Worle in 1899 and lived with his parents William and Annie Jane at the Roses, High Street, Worle. On leaving school he joined the staff of the Maypole Dairy Company in Weston-super-

Mare. Although under the military age of 18, in August 1916 he attempted to realise his ambition to fight for King and Country and enlisted in the Hampshire Regiment, but his age was discovered and he was sent back home.

In February 1917, having reached the required age, he rejoined the regiment and was sent to France in November 1917. His three brothers had already enlisted in the army and were serving in France.

Ernest was wounded on three occasions, but not badly enough to justify admission to a hospital in England. In October 1918 his parents were officially notified that he was wounded and missing and there remained hope of his eventual return.

However, on 27 November they received the sad news that he had been killed in action on 2 September 1918. He was just 19 years old.

It was a sad irony that his sister, Janet, was later to be killed by a bomb in the High Street, Worle, in 1940.

We had a GREAT day again at this year’s Ride, and it certainly looked like the near-900 entrants thoroughly

enjoyed the event!

It was fantastic to see so many people taking part, and also to see such huge numbers of people welcoming the riders home

and cheering them across the line - thank you for creating such a great atmosphere!

Also, the Ride couldn’t possibly happen without the fantastic help and support of a small army of friendly, wonderful people and companies, and we’d like to say an absolutely massive THANK YOU! to everyone who

helped out and contributed to making the Ride such a success again.

Thanks again to you all participants, supporters, and helpers – and we’re looking forward already to doing it all again next year!

In the nineteenth century, with no radio or television, the public houses, inns and drinking houses were very popular, as demonstrated by the number that existed at that time to serve a fairly small community. Also, the quality of drinking water was such, that often cider, beer or wine was consumed instead of the water, in quantities that would seem excessive today.

There are 9 that are known to have existed (there were certainly more):

1. Perhaps the oldest known pub was ‘The George’ in the High Street, which can be dated as far back as 1619 and was closed around 1952.

2. The ‘Smith’s Arms’ became a public house in 1859 when it was purchased by a George Stephens and was closed in 1921. Sadly this picturesque dwelling was demolished and replaced by the ‘Whistling Duck’ in 1967. The name Whistling Duck was named (after a competition to find the best name) by one of the children of the Wills tobacco family then residing in Banwell Castle. Latterly, it has been renamed again as the ‘Seasons’ but is now closed.

3. The ‘White Hart’ stands near the Old School-house on High Street and was known to be licensed between 1906–1932. ‘White Hart’ is the fifth most popular pub name in England (431 in a recent count). ‘Hart’ is the original word for stag, and was the personal emblem of Richard II, who introduced legislation compelling pubs to display a sign.

4. The ‘Bell’ on the corner of West Street and East Street, can be dated to 1745, and is still thriving today. It was for many years in the ownership of the well known Tuckey family who were also stone-cutters; evidence of their work can be seen in Banwell Churchyard.

5. The ‘Ship’ opposite the Bell can be dated to 1745 and was thought to have originally been called the ‘Sheep Inn’ as it was used by sheep drovers who drove their sheep down the High Street (which in its turn was originally called ‘Hardings Lane’). The Ship and the Bell were also post houses where wagonettes plying their trade from Weston to Cheddar called in to have their horses changed before continuing their journey. It was desirable to have fresh horses to face the long pull up Castle Hill (then named the ‘Rodway’), which was even steeper in those days than it is now.

6. The ‘Brewers Arms’ in Church Street was originally a family home; in 1851 it was a home for John Nichols, papermaker, and in 1822 Daniel Hemens, papermaker and family. In the 1851 census Daniel is described as a ‘former papermaker’ which is around the date that the paper mill closed. In 1861 it became a public house and the first landlord was Thomas Parsley, a baker and innkeeper. According to a previous licensee, he had been told that at one time the pub was called the ‘Paper Mill Arms’

7. There was another public house, the ‘Mitre’ which once stood at Knightcott which appeared to have been built around 1851 with John Cheatham as the innkeeper. This photo was taken when it was being used as a private home by the Eddy family.

8. An Inn called the ‘Globe’ stood at No.30 West Street (now called ‘Stonehouse’) which was referred to in 1846 owned by Richard Tuckey and before that, according to church rates, it was called the “Hand & Pen” which then included No. 32.

9. Then there was the ‘Swan’, listed as such in 1706, which overlooked the village pond and is now a dwelling called the ‘Mill House’ which is next to the Post Office.

Ashton Windmill, Chapel AllertonAs one of the few remaining windmills in Somerset, the stone tower of Ashton Windmill, Chapel Allerton, is over 200 years old. A stone tower mill with a cedar-boarded cap, the mill was built about 1760 for the purpose of grinding corn for flour and beans for cattle food.

The earliest known reference to a windmill at Chapel Allerton is in 1317. The high ground here, known as the ‘Isle of Wedmore’, is an ideal place for a windmill as it catches the wind from many different directions.

Ashton Windmill was renovated in 1958 (after being originally closed in 1929), when the stonework was restored, and a new boat-shaped roof, doors and new sails were fitted. For the first time, the windmill was visited by the public. After the death of the owner in 1966, the mill was cared for by Bristol City Museum. The sails were renewed in 2009 by Sedgemoor District Council.

The site belongs to and is maintained by Sedgemoor District Council, with help from a Management Committee with representatives of the Council, Parish Council and local volunteer custodians.

Ashton Windmill is now open regularly throughout the summer, thanks to a dedicated team of local volunteers.

Patient�Council��at�Weston�General�HospitalPatients�supporting�the�improvements�in�Care�Weston�General�Hospital’s mission is to deliver the best possible patient care. As part of this, the hospital has started an exciting journey to improve the way services are delivered to patients for the population it serves across North Somerset and parts of Somerset. In 2012 it set up the Patient’s Council to give the Weston Area Health NHS Trust a view of the hospital from the people who use it, to help influence how services and patient experience can be improved.

The recruitment process for the Council was two-fold. A selection of 40 patients and relatives, who in the last 12 months had previously written to the hospital about its services were contacted, and an advert was placed in local papers inviting people to attend. The Patients Council were keen to recruit people who had a range of experiences and also actively sought out people who were dissatisfied with their experience, at the Trust. A seminar was held on a Saturday in early July and over 50 people attended, from which 23 expressed a formal interest in forming the Patients’ Council.

To make sure recruitment was fair, applicants were interviewed by non-staff members, such as volunteers from the National Patients’ Association and the local Primary Care Trust. Sixteen members were recruited and the first meeting was held in October 2012, with the nomination of the Chair concluding in November 2012. The Chair of the Patients’ Council now has a seat at the Weston Area Health Authority Trust Board and provides a direct link with discussion and decisions taken at Board level that may affect the life of the patient.

A hugely valuable body of expertise is shared in the Patients’ Council, who work with the Trust to monitor and measure the experience of the patient, offer critical advice in any changes in policy which may impact on patient care and to input into the delivery of change.

Although it is still early days for the Patients’ Council, it is rapidly growing as an invaluable representative body. As members find their feet, they are sitting on key committees and have developed a Patient Experience Strategy to assist the Trust in measuring how patients feel about their care and in making the necessary changes. This will grow into a powerful group and is fortunate to have passionate, intelligent, and committed individuals.

One Council member says: “I have used the services of the Trust on many occasions not just for myself but for family members, including my children, grandchildren, partner and mother.”

“Our mission is to look at any improvements that need to be made for patients, and work with the Trust to make them happen. I thoroughly enjoy my work as a member of the Patients Council, which is very diverse and has enabled me to have an insight into and an understanding of the workings and running of such a complex organization that is forever in the public eye.”

“In addition, I am getting to know some members of staff and understand what motivates them, as well as engaging with patients while developing the Trust’s Patient Experience Strategy, visiting wards and observing practice, and patient and staff interactions. I feel when you have a grasp of both sides of the coin it helps to enable us to make good and fair decisions regarding the work we are doing in assisting the Trust in improving the patient experience.”

Woodland�Lawn�Tennis�Club,�W-s-MCOME�AND�PLAY�SESSIONS

Woodland has two open sessions where non-members can come along and enjoy a game of tennis.

On Fridays, from 9.30am until 11ish, Woodland runs a ‘ladies’ morning’. All abilities are welcome, even complete beginners, and the most essential requirement is a good

sense of humour! Light refreshments and a good chat also play a major role in the morning’s activities.

Rackets can be provided. The cost to non-members is £2 and members can come along for free.

On Thursday evenings, from 6.30pm, there is an open Club evening where social games are arranged. Again, there is a £2 charge for non-members; this session is not suitable for those who have never played before.

Weston-super-Mare��&�District��

Skittle�LeagueIt will soon be the start of the winter skittles season again.

Captains of the Weston & District Men’s League will be collecting

their fixture books on 18th August and the season will

commence on 2nd September.

The League is scheduled to start with 45 teams but even

at this late stage it could accommodate further teams

subject to alleys etc.

Team Mendip Ladies; Shepton Mallet 5-a-SideTeam Mendip Ladies FC had mixed fortunes at the recent Shepton Malet 5-a-side tournament.

Fielding two teams the Reds captained by Sophie Marks and the Whites captained by Charlie Longhorn.

Both teams had wins in the group stages and the whites were unlucky not to progress to the semi-

finals. The Reds despite losing Chaz Timmins to a serious knee injury did progress to the semi’s were they were well beaten by the eventual winners of the competition.

The hot weather conditions made it a testing but enjoyable workout for all the girls.

Pre-season training continues on Wednesdays and Sundays and new players are most welcome.
