Julia LaJuett of Hilton, a Cinema and Pho-tography major in Ithaca College’s Roy H. Park School of Communications, has been inducted into Lambda Pi Eta, the national communication honor society.

David Bocach, son of Dan and Carol Bocach of Hilton, was named to the dean’s list at Sacred Heart University in Connecticut. Based on his academic accomplishments, he also qualified for admission to the five-year combined Bachelor’s/Master’s accelerated degree program in Chemistry.

The following local residents recently were initi-ated into The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi, the nation’s oldest and most selective collegiate honor society for all academic disciplines.•Sabrina Caliri of Hamlin initiated at Rochester Institute of Technology•Michael Slack of Bergen initiated at Rochester Institute of Technology•Nicole Torcello of Churchville initiated at Florida Institute of Technology

These residents are among approximately 30,000 students, faculty, professional staff and alumni to be initiated into Phi Kappa Phi each year. Member-ship is by invitation and requires nomination and approval by a chapter. Only the top 10 percent of seniors and 7.5 percent of juniors, having at least 72 semester hours, are eligible for membership. Graduate students in the top 10 percent of the number of candidates for graduate degrees may also qualify, as do faculty, professional staff and alumni who have achieved scholarly distinction.

The Community Service Award recognizes stu-dents who have demonstrated a commitment to service, either to the Nazareth College community or the greater community at large.•Toni Battista of Brockport earned the Commu-nity Service Award at Nazareth College.•Monica Grisdale of Hilton earned the Commu-nity Service Award at Nazareth College.

The college gathered to share service stories and honor and celebrate the vibrant organizations with whom it serves. Nazareth also gathers to celebrate the commitments that students, faculty and staff make towards leading a civically engaged life, volunteering time and talents to the community and inspiring others to become caring, active and informed members of society.

Major General Anthony P. German, the Adjutant General, announces the recent reenlistment of members of the New York Army National Guard in recognition of their continuing commitment to serve community, state and nation as part of the Army National Guard.•Sergeant Timothy Brugger from Hilton has re-enlisted to continue service with the Headquarters Service Company, 642nd Support Battalion.•Sergeant Matthew Gleason from Brockport has reenlisted to continue service with the 1156th Engineer Company.•Sergeant Katherine Michaloski from Roch-ester has reenlisted to continue service with the Company A (Distribution), 427th Brigade Support Battalion.•Specialist Sharlyn Rios from Hilton has reen-listed to continue service with the Company C (Medical), 427th Brigade Support Battalion.

Melissa Nellist, daughter of Randall Nellist and Bonnie Nellist of Rochester, was named a 2015-2016 Outstanding Undergraduate Scholar at Rochester Institute of Technology. Melissa is a third-year student in the mechanical engineering program in RIT’s Kate Gleason College of Engi-neering.

The awards, a bronze medallion, were given in ceremonies on April 7 to those students who have met the scholarship criteria - a minimum GPA of 3.85; completion of more than two-thirds of the credit hours required for a bachelor’s degree and demonstrated community engagement, such as

newsmakers & in the service

creative work, serve on student committees, civic activities, employment or independent research.

The Adjutant General of New York announced the recent service accomplishment of members of the New York Army National Guard in recognition of their initial commitment to serve community, state and nation.

Pvt. Zonglin Li from Rochester completed the Army’s rigorous basic combat training and ad-vanced individual training, culminating with a ceremony held April 3 at the Patriot Way Army Aviation Support Facility in Rochester to mark start of training with his new unit, Headquarters Support Company, 642nd Support Battalion.

The ceremony marks his completion of the National Guard Recruit Sustainment Program, a preparatory training program that provides new recruits with training, lessons and skills to excel at their initial military training.

Pvt. Li will now embark on the traditional Na-tional Guard service to state and nation as a part time Citizen Soldier.

The Adjutant General for the State of New York announced the promotion of members of the New York Army National Guard in recognition of their capability for additional responsibility and leader-ship.•Jared Heidt from Hamlin and serving with the 152nd Engineer Support Company is promoted to the rank of Specialist.•Sharlyn Rios from Hilton and serving with the Company C (Medical), 427th Brigade Support Bat-talion is promoted to the rank of Specialist.•Jacob Napier from Hilton and serving with the A Troop, 2-101 Cavalry (Reconnaissance, Surveil-lance and Target Acquisition) is promoted to the rank of Private.•Jacob Thompson from Hamlin and serving with the C Troop, 2-101 Cavalry (Reconnaissance, Surveillance and Target Acquisition) is promoted to the rank of First Lieutenant.

Army National Guard promotions are based on overall performance, attitude, leadership ability and development potential.

These promotions additionally recognize the best qualified Soldiers and attract and retain the high-est caliber Citizen Soldiers for a career in the New York Army National Guard.
