WESTVIEW’S BUZZ

A Note from your Principal

Dear Parents,

Again this year we will be using a curriculum called Second Step to help us think about,

develop, and practice positive social skills. Research tells us that children who learn

appropriate social skills and then use the skills are more likely to get along with others

and do well in school.

The Westview staff will continue to assist the students to:

G: Get Ready to Learn

R: Respect Me, Respect You

E: Everyday My Best

E: Excellent Choices

N: Notice Good Deeds

You will find our pledge posted in various locations throughout the building. The Second Step program takes this one

step further. Students will have lessons that teach empathy, impulse control & problem solving, and anger

management.

Empathy.

Empathy means identifying and understanding others’ feelings in order to be a more caring person. Caring about

others gives us a reason to want to solve problems so that others are not hurt.

Impulse Control and Problem Solving.

Managing emotions can be challenging. Most students could benefit by learning to slow down and think through

options when faced with difficult situations or problems. We will teach students a five step process to solve

problems:

1. What is the problem?

2. What are some solutions?

3. For each solution, ask: Is it safe? How might people feel? Is it fair? Will it work?

4. Choose a solution and use it.

5. Is it working? If not, what can I do now?

Anger Management.

Students will learn that conflicts are a normal part of life. Everyone gets angry at times.

Anger is not a bad emotion, but what a person does when angry can be a problem.

Students will be taught what to do when they are angry.

1. How does my body feel?

2. Calm down. Take three deep breaths. Count backward slowly. Think nice thoughts.

Talk to yourself (tell yourself to calm down).

3. Think out loud to solve the problem (using the problem solving steps).

Think about it later.

April-Humility, May-Endurance.

We know that you will want to join us in helping students develop these skills by reinforcing some of them at

A reminder that you can access Richmond Community School board minutes, up-to- date information about

Richmond Community Schools, and information about Westview Elementary and other schools in the district

by visiting our web site at www.rcs.k12.in.us

You can also access our ISTEP+ data by visiting the Indiana Department of Education web site at

www.doe.state.in.us. I want to take a minute to celebrate our ISTEP+ scores in grades 3 and 4. Our scores fol-

low and are quite impressive from my perspective:

Instructional time is valuable. We ask that you make any needed arrangements for after-school pick-up before

your child leaves in the morning. We do not want to interrupt learning unless it is an emergency.

WESTVIEW ELEMENTARY NEWS October 2013

Hello Westview!

The Road to Success program has started off great this year. We have many students reading every day BUT we

need every student reading every day! Westview’s school reading goal is 80% participation every week. Right

now we are at 53% participation. Our Week 1 leader was Mrs. Barth’s class with 75% participation and our Week

2 leader was Mrs. Thompson’s class with 73% participation. I know with your help we can reach our school goal.

Please have your child read or read to them 7 nights a week and make sure to fill out and return their Road to

Success folder every Monday. If they read 5 nights a week they get one ticket to enter into the weekly drawing for

prizes and if they read 7 nights a week they get two tickets to enter into the weekly drawing for prizes. Remember

every 8 weeks we have a drawing for one of the Road to Success grand prizes: a bike, a scooter or an iPod

Shuffle. Please make sure that your child reads so that they can be included in the drawing for these awesome

prizes!

Westview PTO September 2013 Minutes

Official Business Westview PTO met in the Westview Cafeteria on Tuesday, September 10, 2013 at 6:30pm. The meeting began

with PTO President, Amy Holiday called the business meeting to order.

Introduction of officers: Amy Holiday-President, Tekeyla Pennington-Vice President, Kristen Brunton-Treasurer,

and Linda Shepherd-Acting Secretary.

Student of the month will be changed to trimester. Teachers may select more than one student. All teachers are

encouraged to participate. This includes creative arts teachers and special needs teachers. Students will be

recognized on November 12th, February 11th and May 13th.

School skates will be on the 3rd Tuesday of the month from 5:30-7:30 with Fairview. It was noted that we made

money from the skates since we combined with Fairview last year.

The book fair will be held during the 3 day week of parent/teacher conferences. The dates are October 21st-23rd.

More information will follow after Amy’s meeting with Scholastic. Volunteers will be needed for both the day

and evening hours that the fair will be open.

There will be a collection competition of Box Tops held during the month of October ending on the 23rd. The win-

ning classroom will receive an ice cream party. We receive 10 cents per Box Top. This is a good way for the

PTO to make money for our school. We are still collecting Campbell’s Labels for Education UPCs and Tyson

Project A+ labels however they are not included in the competition.

Volunteers are needed for the kindergarten vision screening on September 27th at 12:15. Two people have volun-

teered and Mrs. Harrison will assist in getting at least two more.

There was a discussion of possible alternative times for the PTO to meet. One suggestion was a day after school

right after the kids are dismissed. There will be more discussion of this.

Secret Santa will be held again this year. Possible vendors will be researched. Mrs. Shepherd and Mrs. Harrison

volunteered to help shop for items if we decided not to use a vendor.

It was agreed to give each teacher $100 for necessary supplies for the classroom. A form will be created for teach-

er to complete and attached the receipts to before being reimbursed.

The Kid Fest parade on Sept. 21st was brought up for discussion. It was tabled for next year due to the short time

frame to organize Westview students and families walking in the parade.

PTO will send their information home on fluorescent green paper.

An alternative fund raising idea was brought to the meeting by Marielle Sullivan. The idea is to have wreaths

made by grade levels and then raffled off at the high school. This would be coordinated by PTOs throughout

the district. Further information and discussion will be needed before any decisions are made.

Next PTO Meting will be October 8th @ 6:30PM.

Meeting was adjourned. Submitted by Linda Shepherd, Acting Secretary
