The week of August 19, we’ll be celebrating with our employees. This will be our second annual “Spirit Week” and you’ll see special meals, a raffle, a karaoke contest and more happening throughout the community for our employees. We’ve also been brainstorming on ideas for a service project out in the greater community and would love to hear your ideas! Thought I would share a few updated statistics. You may find it interesting to know that 5% of our employees have worked for Belmont Village for over 5 years and 49% of staff have worked here 2 years or longer. If you add the 34% that have over one year with us, 83% of our Belmont Village Westwood team has worked here for a year or longer. This is an 8% improvement over 2012 and it’s very exciting to see how our turnover has decreased over the last three years. Save the date! Sunday, Nov. 3, is the “Walk To End Alzheimer’s” in Century City. Devi Reznik, Memory Program Coordinator, has registered our team name “The Forget-Me-Nots”! Please sign up at either the Concierge desk or on-line at act.alz.org/goto/westwood. We hope to see you there. On Friday, Aug. 23, we’ll have the first of a series of “Casual for a Cause” Fridays. Residents and staff are invited to wear denim for the day when they contribute $5 to our Alzheimer’s Walk fund. Last but not least, Hea Hea or Komo Mai! Welcome! If it’s August, then it’s time to break out the flowered shirts and leis! We invite you, your family and friends to join us Thursday, Aug. 8, for a fabulous Hawaiian buffet followed by the Tausala Polynesia performance poolside at 6:30 p.m. On a special note, please offer your congratulations to Susan Berger, Community Relations, who just celebrated her 10th anniversary with Belmont Village! Baby BoomerHealth Trends

• By 2050, the U.N. estimatesfor the first time ever, theworld population will havemore people over 65 thanchildren age 5 and younger. Those born between 1946and 1964 begin to enter theirretirement years.

• The Health care system willhave its hands full as babyboomers continue to retire indroves. By 2030, about 60percent of boomers willexperience more than onechronic health condition.

• American boomers areexpected to live longer thanany previous generations.Boomers are also likely toremain independent and livein their own homes longer.

• As more and more boomersreach retirement age, there isa generational focus onlongevity and delaying thephysical and visible effects ofaging. It is no surprise thatmany boomers view exerciseas a key ingredient to longer, healthier, and happy life.

• Four in five boomers aremore food conscious, moreattentive to food labels andknow more about the originsof their food products thanthey did in 1980. More arebuying organic food items, and a larger percentage oftheir grocery purchases areorganic products than theywere in years past.

• Baby boomers are livinglonger than any previousgeneration; they also havethe dubious distinction ofhaving the highest rates ofobesity for their age bracketthan any other generation. In1994, 31 percent of thosebetween than ages of 55 and64 were obese, by 2002; therate had climbed to 39percent.
