Ashlyn George’s stint as the 2015 Saskatchewan-derer — the most success-ful year yet — wraps up at the end of the week.

The 28 year-old, who plans on writing a book while pursuing a career in social and travel media, will continue to travel globally. Her plans include a trip to Antarctica — the only continent she hasn’t yet visited.

EDITORIAL !EDITORIAL !!this weekREFLECTIONS ON A YEAR

Another year has past, with New Year’s Eve right around the corner. We should take time to consider what was important to each one of us, and how we could all take steps to improve our communities.

Sabrina Kraft [email protected]

Change is a part of life. As another year passes by on New Year’s Eve, many people will take time to reflect on the changes in their lives. They will reflect on the struggles, the successes, and what were the important mile-

stones of the year.Of course, for the staff of the Weyburn Review and Weyburn

This Week, the biggest change was merging the two papers into one office. After a few hiccups along the way, our staff has adapted to these changes and have come together to put out two quality papers.

Both the Weyburn Review and Weyburn This Week were refreshed with new looks earlier this year. The ideas keep on flowing to ensure each paper has a valuable market, and readers will notice some new things for the Review and This Week in the coming year.

Change can be exciting. Some people embrace change as a new opportunity. However, there are others who are hesitant of the changes.

Especially in the newspaper industry, it is important to adapt to changing times. Readers are looking for their news in differ-ent ways — since many younger readers are using social media or Apps to get the news that is important to them.

As I look back on the stories that were important to our read-ers in the last year — I know that is one aspect of the papers that won’t change. It continues to be important to cover com-munity events, and report on the news that is important to our readers. There are so many stories just waiting to be discovered

in our community too. There are successes and challenges faced by our community members, our businesses and our non-profit groups.

It is important to think outside the box, and keep our eyes and ears open to new ways of learning about these stories.

As we move forth into a new year, there are so many new opportunities for us to reflect, and consider how to truly get in-volved in our community.

There are so many amazing non-profit groups that are seek-ing volunteers, so many amazing community-driven projects, and so many ways to help in little ways.

Our community itself has changed over the last year. We have seen struggles from businesses and residents due to the ef-fects of the low oil prices.

We have seen the financial belt tightening of our municipal, provincial and federal governments.

But we have also seen how our community has come togeth-er to support those in need. That our community members are willing to do what they can for those who have faced adversity. We also have so many businesses and local groups who are willing to donate back into the community, to see it prosper. In our own ways, we are all vital community members. It is because of each one of us that Weyburn is still a prosperous and thriving community. It is because of our hospitality and welcoming spirit that Weyburn continues to attract tourists and those who want to move into the community.

I truly believe that we will all find ways to ensure that the important projects for our community are on task for the new year. That more changes will come that present many new ex-citing opportunities.

Of all the church and school Christmas pageants, plays and concerts I’ve attended over my seventy plus years of living, this week I witnessed the most joyous and moving Nativity presenta-tion of all I’ve ever experienced. Here’s how it happened.

A friend asked me if I could help out at the Christmas party for a group called Faith and Light. I was happy to do what I thought was a favour for a friend and her friends. My role was to play the piano for a Christmas carol sing-song, something I delight in doing; other than that, I hadn’t both-ered to ask anything much about the group. As it turned out, this organization was founded decades ago for the purpose of providing intel-lectually and physically chal-lenged adults with the spiritual care, fellowship and fun so many of us simply take for granted.

It took just a few minutes for me to realize that I was the one who was most blessed to

be there. At the risk of sounding

condescending when that is the last thing I want, I was moved to tears at the warm welcome I received. Waiting for the call to dinner, I chatted with many of the three dozen or so people there.

Challenged or not, these folks know how to smile, to sing, to display impeccable table manners and to respond to the invitation to role play.

“Who wants to be Mary?” a leader asked. No shortage of volunteers for that part…or for the portrayal of Joseph, wise men, angels or shepherds. Draped in blankets, crowned with foil-covered tiaras and adorned with smiles, they brought new life to a centur-ies old story. And, you should have heard them singing!

“Let everything that has breath praise the Lord” (Psalm 150:6)

Thank you Faith and Light for bringing Christmas praises to life.

A Beautiful TimeBy Linda Wegner

ASK WEYBURN CITY COUNCIL A QUESTION

Do you have a question that you wouldlike to pose to city council?

Or perhaps a concern regarding amunicipal issue that you would like the city

to address, in the interest of the city’s taxpayers? Pass along your concern or question to us, and we will pose the question to city council, or the appropriate city official, and we will then try our best to print the city’s response or explanation of the issue or concern.

Include your name and phone number for verification purposes (your name will not be published), and either phone us in the newsroom at 306-842-6955, or email to [email protected], and in the subject line write “City council question”.

The questions should be of interest to the taxpay-ers of the city and should not be personal in nature.

VIEWPOINTS!VIEWPOINTS!!this week 5FRIDAY, DECEMBER 25, 2015

With all the contro-versy surrounding the arrival of refugees in our country, I find it silly that we expel so much energy in debating the issue.

Do we have a say? Absolutely! Do we have rights? Absolutely! Do the powers that be care what we think? Abso-lutely not! They say if we stick together, collect-ivelyt our voice will be heard. We would like to believe in this, but that’s not what is happening.

It’s like when we, as

parents, believe that we have a say when it comes to circumstances that happen in the school sys-tem. You can vote on it, they tell us. Your view-point counts, they say. Yet when it comes right down to it, they will do whatever they want.

Then when they get backlash, they blame the government who they say has the final decision.

Why do they give us the false sense that we have a right at the local level, if they are just go-

ing to play the govern-ment card at the end?

I hope the residents of Pangman continue fight-ing to keep their school. Our children all deserve an education within a rea-sonable distance from our home. People have taken up residence in this small rural town, along with gen-erations of families who have called Pangman their home. They are paying for an education. Their kids just want to go to school and learn. Talk about rights? Education is their

right.Since I won’t have

another column in 2015, I would like to share an article entitled ‘Sugges-tions for Success’ from H. Jackson Brown Jr. Hopefully you can imple-ment some of these sug-gestions into your 2106 resolutions.

1. Marry the right per-son. This one decision will determine 90% of your happiness or misery.

2. Work at something you enjoy and that’s worthy of your time and

talent.3. Give people more

than they expect and do it cheerfully.

4. Become the most positive and enthusiastic person you know.

5. Be forgiving of yourself and others.

6. Have a grateful heart.

7. Treat everyone you meet like you want to be treated.

8. Be a self-starter.9. Stop blaming others.

Take responsibility for every area of your life.

10. Don’t do anything that wouldn’t make your Mom proud.

Keep literacy active during the holidays

Spend the Winte r Holidays Playing and Learn ing wi th Your Family!

Schools c lose for the holidays, but young minds and bodies need to keep busy. The winter holidays can be the per-fect time for families to play games that reinforce learning.

ABC Life Literacy Canada offers these holi-day family-time tips to help the cold days pass quickly — and these ac-tivities are so fun that your little ones won’t even realize they are practicing important lit-eracy skills!

• Lights out, talk on: After your bedtime story, turn the lights off and create new endings to the story you just read together.

• Number Walk: As you put on your boots, choose something you want to count during your walk. It could be dogs, trees, stop signs, cars — anything you want! On your walk, count how

many you can find.• Travel the World:

Use your library card as your passport to check out books or explore websites on different countries. Learn about their traditions and cele-brations.

• Know it All: Togeth-er, look online for the meaning of funny words like “collywobbles” and “onomatopoeia.” Test your family’s’ word power!

• Game On: Start a family board game night and play a different game each week. Family mem-bers can take turns read-ing instructions as well as keeping score.

• Float in a Boat: Work together to fold a family fleet of origami boats.

When fun learning activities become part of your family’s holi-day time, everyone stays sharp and is ready to ring in the New Year in great spirits. Find more family literacy tips and activities at www.FamilyLitera-cyDay.ca.

Dear Reena,I become very frustrated in

the winter when I wash my car. After it sits for a while in freezing temperatures, the doors are stuck and seem impossible to open. Any advice? Lorne.Dear Lorne,

After the car is clean and dry, spray non-stick cooking spray on the inside frame and the inside door. The doors should no longer stick. Be careful not to spray the coating on your upholstery.Dear Reena,

I need an easy way to store plastic lids for containers. My cupboard is a mess and I spend way too much time, trying to match the container with the lid. I am also looking for a way to store plastic grocery bags so that they don’t take up so much room. Jess.Dear Jess,

Have you considered placing a dish rack with separators (used for drying dishes) or a C.D. rack inside the cupboard? Put the lids between the slots and stack the containers nearby. Another op-tion is to purchase a vertical plas-tic drawer system; they often go on-sale in January.

They are usually available with wheels, making it easy to wheel the drawer system to the dishwasher when unloading the machine. Put the smallest lids in the top drawer and bigger lids further down.

It is also smart to remove any mismatched or broken contain-ers. Try not to collect a multitude of container sizes, to make stack-ing easier. Or set a container in your cupboard with the corres-ponding lid underneath; you will no longer need to search.

To store plastic bags, cut a rectangle shape in the lid of an empty coffee can. Push plas-tic bags inside the container. Through the slot pull out one bag at a time.Dear Reena,

We have a seven year old Sil Granite sink. Its color has really faded. Before it was a very matt black now it is a very faded black with white smears streaks.

We used a color enhancer product provided when I bought the sink. I have used two bottles of that which has not helped.

Any chance you have a gem of an idea to get the smears off and somewhat of the color back? Damien.Dear Damien,

Your best bet is to wipe the sink with cooking or olive oil after use; this will remove all of the stains, repel water from sit-ting on the sink and forming white stains and brighten the sink.Dear Reena,

I would like to prepare my own rub for meat.

Can you give me an easy reci-pe that I can use on pork? Heidi.Dear Heidi,

Here is an easy recipe which is perfect for about 6 pounds of meat. Into a bowl combine one quarter cup sugar, 4 tbsp. black pepper, one tbsp. salt, one quarter cup paprika, 2 tsp. dry mustard and 2 tsp. cayenne pepper. Rub half of the mixture onto meat 12 hours prior to cooking. Rub the other half on right before cooking.Dear Reena,

We have a water stain on our popcorn ceiling and were told to try Kilz overhead stain sealer. Now we have a yellow discolora-tion on top of the stain! Any sug-gestions? Wendy.Dear Wendy,

Kilz is a popular brand name but there are many prod-ucts under this name; from Flat Wall and Ceiling Paint to Color Changing Ceiling Paint to Paint with Stain Blocking.

You may need to prime the area before painting the ceiling

but your best bet is to explain your situation to your paint specialist and seek advice. Or contact the Kilz website and query which product is best for your situation.Dear Reena,

How do I go about fixing my yellowed microwave door, help? Jen.Dear Jen,

This may be a permanent condition but don’t give up with-out a fight! Spread toothpaste onto the yellowed area. Dampen the brush with water and scrub with an old toothbrush. Rinse with water and wipe.Dear Reena,

I have always read your column with interest and have used many of your helpful hints. I hope you can help me with this problem. I presently have a set of lamps given to me by my late parents.

They have a glass base and I wonder if they can be painted as we have changed our decor/colors. If so, what type of paint might be used? Thank-you! O.Dear O,

Yes, you can absolutely paint the glass base! Begin by unplugging the lamp and cleaning the base well with plain old dish soap and water. Dry and cover any electrical

wires. Spray on heatproof paint in the color of your choice.Dear Reena,

Why do people deep fry tur-keys instead of baking them? I was given a deep fryer specific-ally for this purpose but I haven’t used it. Is deep frying worth the effort? Nana.Dear Nana,

I have a friend that heads down to the U.S. every Novem-ber for American Thanksgiving just because her dad deep fries the turkey.

She says it is the best way to prepare turkey and nothing beats the flavor. Deep frying turkey is a Cajun tradition that produ-

ces juicy meat and crispy skin; many people agree it is out of this world.Make Ahead Dessert

Fire safety tips for the holidaysChristmas Trees

• Select a dark green, fresh cut tree with a strong evergreen smell.

• Make sure the base of the tree is immersed in water at all times — check the reservoir fre-quently.

• Use only CSA-approved lighting strings — throw damaged light strings away.

• If the tree starts to turn brown — remove it immediately.

• Don’t leave the tree up too long — safely dispose of trees right after the holidays.

Fireplace Safety• Burn small amounts of wood at frequent

intervals.• Don’t burn paper, wrapping paper or pine

boughs. This can cause sparks to drift out of your chimney and ignite your roof.

• Have your chimney checked and cleaned by a professional each winter.

• Use a screen in front of the fireplace to keep sparks in.

• Never use gasoline or other flammable li-quids to light a fire. The vapours will explode.

• Dispose of ashes in a metal container, stored outside away from combustibles.

Space Heaters• Place all space heaters at least one metre

(three feet) away from anything that can burn – wallpaper, bedding and clothing.

• Turn off/unplug space heaters when you leave the room or go to sleep.

• Don’t leave children/pets unattended with space heaters.

• Check electric space heaters for frayed cords or overheating.

• Use only the recommended fuel for liquid fueled heaters. Never use gasoline. Always turn off the heater and let it cool before refueling.

• An unvented fuel-fired heater can produce deadly amounts of carbon monoxide. Ensure combustion gases are vented outdoors.

Candles• Never use lit candles to decorate a Christ-

mas tree.• Keep lit candles away from paper decora-

tions and other flammable materials.• Do not leave candles within reach of chil-

dren or pets.• Put candles in non-tip candleholders and

place them on a firm surface where they won’t be knocked over.

• Snuff candles out. Never let the candles burn down to the bottom.

Supervise Children• Fascination and curiosity about fire can lead

a child to play with matches, lighters or flames within easy reach. This holiday season protect your children from fire.

• Keep matches and lighters out of sight and reach of children.

• Supervise children at all times when they are in a room with a fireplace, a Christmas tree, lit candles, space heater or other open flame or hot surfaces.

Test your Smoke Alarms• Test your smoke alarms monthly.• Never remove the batteries from your smoke

alarms for another purpose.• Clean smoke alarms by vacuuming the cover.• Smoke alarms don’t last forever. Replace

detectors that are more than 10 years old.

Plan Your Escape• Plan and practice a fire escape with your

family. Plan two ways out of every room.• Have a family meeting place outside.

Hometown showdown for Prestige FC:2 event

Two more fights have been added to the card for Prestige FC 2: Queen City Coronation, including a matchup for the one of the most popular fighters from the host city of Regina, Sas-katchewan (all fight pending ACS approval).

Sean Quinn will make a celebrated return to action in front of his hometown fans as he steps in against Eric Wilson in a rematch from their fight from 2013.

Wilson won the original encounter by earning a doc-tor’s stoppage TKO in the third round, but Quinn be-lieves the victory to be high-ly contentious.

“This fight isn’t a re-match. Eric didn’t win our fight,” explained Quinn. “I took a bad step and tore my ACL. I wasn’t done and I didn’t quit. I got up and continued to fight. The ref decided to stop the fight. It’s not like Eric caused the injury. We’re continuing

where we left off. I was win-ning before and I’ll finish him off this time.”

Quinn began his MMA career in 2006 and won five of his first six fights. He has four wins via submission and two by knockout includ-ing his most notable victory — a first-round finish of Kyle Oliviera. Now healed up from three major injur-ies and two surgeries, Quinn returns with a fresh mindset and surging confidence.

“I had a very long time that I couldn’t physically train but I spent every day for the last three months immersed in this sport,” noted Quinn. “I am mentally sharper than ever, and as far as I’m concerned, I’m more dangerous than ever.”

Wilson will be looking to right his ship since defeat-ing Quinn. The Saskatoon fighter fell just short in his last outing as he dropped a unanimous decision to Lou-ie Sanoudakis.

Holiday etiquette: Is it appropriate to give the gift of cash

They say money can’t buy hap-piness, but does it make a suitable holiday gift? According to a new poll conducted by investment dealer Edward Jones, the answer is yes— depending on the recipient. The majority of Canadians sur-veyed feel it is appropriate to give cash as a gift to their children (60 per cent) or grandchildren (60 per cent). However, fewer people (39 per cent) are comfortable giving cash to other family members, and even fewer to their spouse (23 per cent) or a friend (23 per cent).

When asked who’s likely to see the biggest windfall this season, not surprisingly the survey revealed that children are named most often (41 per cent) followed by spouses/partners (27 per cent). Fewer than one in ten mention Mom (eight per cent) and even fewer list a sibling (five percent). The biggest loser is poor old Dad - only one out of a hundred people say he tops their gift giving list.

“Canadians tend to spend the most on their children, and cash makes for an easy, acceptable and often desired present,” says Patrick French, director of financial and retirement planning with Edward

Jones. “However, parents and grandparents may want to consider taking this gift a step further, and give children some practical advice when handing over an envelope of money.”

For those planning to give chil-dren or grandchildren cash this holiday season, Edward Jones sug-gests the gift should be accompan-ied by some advice:

Teach children how to save – When giving children cash, help them understand the difference be-tween saving and spending. Many suggest dividing money into three pools – one for spending, one for saving, one for giving.

Explain principles of investing – Even fairly young children can comprehend what it means to invest in stocks, if it’s carefully explained to them. Use examples of the compan-ies with which they may be familiar, like entertainment companies, consumer packaged goods, or fast food restau-rant chains— and stick to the basics.

Align a monetary gift with a child’s future goal – For example, if attending college or university is a goal for your child, consider making a contribution to a Registered Edu-cation Savings Plan (RESP). With

an RESP you can put aside money for your child’s or grandchild’s post-secondary education, and RESP owners are eligible for the Canada Education Savings Grant, which, at a minimum, provides 20 per cent on every dollar of the first $2,500 con-tributed to RESP each year.

Encourage them to save for the future – It’s not just youth that benefit from monetary gifts this time of year. For adult children, it is worth a dis-cussion around setting up a Regis-tered Retirement Savings Plan (RRSP), as this is a great way to encourage them to think long-term. Your children might also consider a Tax-Free Savings Account (TFSA). Every Canadian resident who has reached the age of majority can con-tribute to a TFSA, which serves as a convenient tax shelter.

“Parents can lead by example by showing children how they save and invest, and by using real-life examples, such as how they bought a new car or home,” adds French, “Becoming financially savvy at an early age is key to developing a fi-nancial foundation for life. At Edward Jones, we believe it’s never too early to learn the benefits of saving and creating solid financial strategies.”

Christmas greetings from Premier Brad Wall

In summer of 2015, public officials in our province of Sas-katchewan issued a decree: that all affected people leave their homes and in mass exo-dus, travel to places of refuge where they could be safe and accounted for.

They were escaping blazing forest fires of epic proportions. It was the largest evacuation in Saskatchewan history. Thou-sands of people were on the move, all of them in uncertain circumstances, not knowing how quickly they would return home.

For a few young women, these circumstances had an added dimension of uncertainty. They were in the late stages of pregnancy. These young women were living as displaced persons far from home, without the supplies they had gathered for their new baby.

But thankfully for all con-cerned, healthy babies were de-livered in hospitals close by with medical staff to give assistance.

We are privileged to live in a province where people come together. That can be difficult when stress levels are high. So, I salute the evacuees, the firefighters, the troops, the Red Cross, and the local officials, the mayors and chiefs.

Those who shared money, food and supplies, and those who prayed for an ending to this situa-tion. All rose to the occasion.

Two thousand years ago, a public official named Caesar Augustus issued a decree that all people needed to be accounted for. It affected the entire Roman world. Everyone needed to be registered.

Many people were on the move, with primitive travel ar-rangements, not knowing how long this would take. I’m sure for some young women, this circum-

stance had an added dimension of uncertainty. Like being in the late stages of pregnancy.

For one of these young women, the time came to have her baby, her first. Not in a local hospital along the way, not even in a clean, comfortable Holiday Inn, but in a stable, with pre-cious few amenities.

Her only assistant, a most likely very, very nervous hus-band, with perhaps some curi-ous animals looking on.

She didn’t have much for supplies either. All she had were a few strips of cloth to wrap him in. And all she could lay him in was not a cradle made by her carpenter hus-band, but just a simple, dirty manger.

Crude surroundings for a King. His first visitors — an adoring group in from the fields smelling strongly of sheep. They were alerted by a type of atmospheric media unlike any we could imagine.

All rose to the occasion. This Christmas, we cele-

brate the arrival of that very special baby boy. The “Divinest Heart that ever walked the earth was born on that day” as it has been said. (Leigh Hunt)

His name is Jesus, the es-sence of hope and peace and the ultimate example of self-sacrifice for love.

So from me and my wife Tami, and our family, and on behalf of my colleagues in the Government of Saskatchewan: “May you have the gladness of Christmas which is hope; The spirit of Christmas which is peace; The heart of Christmas which is love.” (Ada V. Hen-dricks)

And may you spread joy to others who need it most. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Lieut. Governor reflects on

Christmas pastIn 1914, the world was

at war. Trench warfare cre-ated very difficult circum-stances, particularly in the cold of winter.

But on that Christmas Eve, something remark-able happened. A Christ-mas truce was called, and the soldiers on both sides laid down their weapons.

They ventured out of their trenches and even exchanged modest gifts. That night, when the British soldiers began to sing “O Come All Ye Faithful,” the Germans joined in, singing the same hymn to the Latin words “Adeste Fideles.”

For me, this is the true message of Christmas. No matter what our circum-stances, there is reason for hope and for gratitude.

This Christmas, I am grateful for the Canadian men and women in uni-form. I wish to thank the Canadian Armed Forces, our police officers, firefight-ers, and paramedics, for the sacrifices they make

to serve. I am fortunate to take part in hundreds of events each year across Saskatchewan. This is a constant reminder to me of our greatest strength — our innovative, compassion-ate, and generous people.

I am grateful to every-one who gives their time to provide leadership to local organizations, and to sup-port community events and initiatives. Truly, you are what makes our province and our nation great.

As you celebrate this special season with your family and friends, I wish you good health and much happiness throughout the coming year. Merry Christ-mas everyone!

To a joyful present and awell remembered past.

Best wishes for Happy Holidays and a magnificent New Year.

MP Dr. Kitchen shares his Christmas greeting

The Christmas season truly is the most wonderful time of the year.

It is a time when friends and family come together to celebrate the blessings that occur in our day-to-day lives. It is also a time to relax and enjoy a slower pace of life as we gear up for the new year.

When the holiday sea-son arrives, it is almost palpable.

The decorations, lights, and Christmas music in-fuse a certain spirit into the air that is not found during any other time of year. As the people weave through the streets while doing their shopping, the smiles on their faces make it clear: Christmas has arrived.

We are so fortunate to live in this wonderful country where there are

many opportunities to get outdoors with your loved ones and enjoy many of the fun winter activities that Canada has to offer. I en-courage all of you to get in-volved this holiday season.

As I drove to work this morning with a light dusting of snow all around, I heard “The Gift of Christmas” by Gipp Forster playing on the radio. I always love hearing these tales at this time of year. It always makes me smile, occasionally brings a tear to my eye, as well as dream of days gone by and those to come.

As Member of Parlia-ment for Souris-Moose Mountain, I would like to extend my best wishes to all constituents for a Merry Christmas filled with love and happiness, and a Happy New Year.

NDP leader reflects on warmth of ChristmasHello everyone, and

Merry Christmas! I love this time of year. As the weath-er outside is increasingly cold, and as the world is at its darkest, we have this in-credible season of warmth and light.

Warmth that comes as we gather with family and friends, to carry on long-held traditions, and even start some new ones.

And light that comes not only in colourful displays, but also through reflections on the past year, as we count our many blessings and look forward to what the New Year will bring.

I can’t wait to see my daughters, their eyes all lit up, as they take in all the wonder of Christmas.

Their laughter as they play with their cousins. Their enthusiasm in giving and receiving gifts from under the tree. And their big smiles as they drink mugs of hot chocolate after tobogganing outside.

I’m looking forward to gathering with family and friends, to enjoy traditional Norwegian food.

And I’m also looking for-ward to a few days away from the normal routine, to break out my cross-country skis and enjoy the scenery of this beautiful province.

For many of us, this is also a time to celebrate the Christmas story – a story of a baby, Jesus Christ, born in a stable, and rushed off to another country, as his family sought refuge from violence and tyranny. Christ’s message was one of love, grace and peace.

A message that urges us to look out for one another, comfort those who suffer, feed the hungry, welcome

the stranger, and give hope to the vulnerable.

In so many ways, those are Saskatchewan values — the kind of values that motivate me as a leader to do everything I can to en-sure that all people in our province are doing well, and that all of us can get ahead and achieve our dreams for our children. In this season, we also think of all those whose lives were overturned this year — through illness or loss of work; through the death of loved ones; through mas-sive forest fires in Northern Saskatchewan; natural dis-asters and acts of violence around the world; and war in places like Iraq, Syria and Ukraine.

As we sing carols call-ing for peace on earth, joy to all the world, and the end of oppression and sorrow, we join with all those who yearn for a much brighter 2016. Whatever meaning this holiday season has for you, and however you cele-brate it, I hope it’s a great one for you.

On behalf of my wife, Ruth, our daughters, Ingrid, Clara and Gudrun, and all New Democrat MLAs — I wish you a Merry Christ-mas; holidays that are full of joy; and a New Year that is happy, peaceful and prosperous.

Traveling with Pets:Do’s and Don’ts of Hotels, Transportation and More

For many people, pets are an integral part of the family, and a vacation would feel in-complete without their pres-ence.

However, due to concerns over where to stay, what mode of transportation to use, and how the trip will impact the pet’s behavior and well-being, the prospect of traveling with them may induce stress.

Of course, selecting a pet-friendly hotel is key, but to en-sure an enjoyable getaway for all members of the pack, con-sider the following tips:

• Do map out your entire travel itinerary before the trip, taking your pet’s safety and comfort into consideration at every step. Where will your animal companion stay when you are exploring places that may not be pet-friendly? Are there parks or pet-friendly restaurants near your hotel? Where is the closest veterin-arian in the event of an emer-gency?

• If you are worried that your pet will suffer anxiety or disrupt other travelers or hotel guests, do consult your vet in advance of the trip. He or she may be able to prescribe anxiety medication or a mild sedative to calm your pet if needed and will likely have other travel tips to offer.

• Don’t take a hotel’s claim that it is pet-friendly at face value. Many hotels accept pets, but not all welcome them. If you are considering a hotel that will charge you extra for bringing your furry friend, look for another option if pos-sible.

Hotels that are truly pet-friendly will not upcharge you and will take steps to ensure that human and non-human guests alike have a comfort-able stay. When in doubt, call the hotel, ask about their pet policies, and try to gauge their true attitude toward pets.

• Do plan the transporta-tion of your pet. If you are

flying to your destination, re-search the airline’s policies for transporting animals. Larger pets must fly in the cargo hold, where some airlines will only carry animals at certain times. If your pet is small enough to fit under the seat, research the best type of carrier and whether the airline recom-mends a particular brand.

Allow your pet a chance to become accustomed to the carrier well in advance of the trip. Try to book direct flights if possible to minimize the length of the journey. If you are driving, be sure to sched-ule stops every few hours to allow yourself and your pet a chance to stretch and breathe some fresh air.

For safety in the event of an accident, your pet should be kept in a crate or carrier that is restrained by a seatbelt in the back seat. Of course, avoid leaving your pet in the car, even on days that feel cool or when you will only be

gone for a short time. On a 72-degree day, the temper-ature inside a car can soar to over 100 degrees Fahrenheit within an hour. Feed your pet only a small meal before trav-eling to reduce the risk of mo-tion sickness.

• Do pack items that are familiar to your pet, such as his or her bowl, bed, favorite toy, and crate. Maintain your pet’s health while away by bringing his or her food and any medications that may be needed.

• Don’t leave your pet alone in the hotel room. Aside from the fact that most hotels do not allow pets to be left alone, doing this may cause your companion to become anxious and possibly disrupt-ive to other guests. If you are planning an excursion and bringing your pet will not be an option, see if there is a kennel nearby where you can board him or her for a few hours. In the event that your hotel does

allow you to leave the pet in your room while you are gone and you choose to do so, be sure to leave your phone number with the front desk in case of an emergency.

• Do ensure that you pet is up to date on vaccines and other preventive measures, like heartworm and flea or tick treatments. Some hotels require this, and it will protect your pet and other animals that you may encounter in the course of your travels.

• Do remember that as much as you adore your pet, not everyone that you en-counter on your trip will share the same sentiment.

This may be the case even at pet-friendly hotels or res-taurants. With that in mind, be considerate of all guests by ensuring that your pet is quiet and well-behaved. Keep him or her on a leash or otherwise contained. Only allow your pet to use the restroom in designated areas and be sure

to clean up afterwards.• Dogs can be fun hiking

companions. If you decide to bring your dog along for a hike, do keep him or her on a short leash. Not only do many public trails require you to use a leash that is six feet long or less, but a shorter leash will allow you to help keep your dog from unseen hazards off the trail.

Carry a pet first-aid kit and consider taking a first-aid class before your hike. Most importantly, make sure that your dog is sufficiently fed and hydrated. Do not allow him or her to drink from streams or other natural sources; fil-ter the water first to prevent bacterial infection, just as you would do for yourself.

For a strenuous hike, con-sult with your vet to ensure that your dog is up to the chal-lenge. If you are hiking in warm weather, be sure to take fre-quent rests and consider using a cooling collar for your dog.

Christmas is a fun time with these safety tips

Christmas is a fun time of year for every age with lots of goodies, gifts and decorations. There are also hidden dangers for families and children

Here are a few tips for keeping you and your family safe during this holiday season:

Christmas tree: Buy a tree that is not dry

and brittle, keep it well-watered. Don’t overload your electrical outlets.

Use a sturdy stand and keep the tree away from heating vents, floor heat-ers, fireplaces and other heat sources.

Never decorate the tree with candles.Use CSA (Canadian Standard Asso-ciation) approved lights.

Decorations:Keep small tree orna-

ments and tinsel out of the reach of toddlers, near the top of the tree. Be careful with plants. Poinsettias are poisonous.

Fire Safety:

Use outdoor lights out-side only. Turn off your Christmas tree lights when you are in bed or not home.

Always test the batteries in your smoke detectors. Plan fire escape routes. Practice these fire escape routes with your family.

Entertaining:Have plenty of non-

alcoholic options for chil-dren, or pregnant friends or family members.

Always clean up im-mediately after a holiday party. A child could wake up early and choke on left-over food or consume alco-hol or tobacco that was left out. Christmas candies and nuts can be a choking haz-ard for young children.

Buy age appropriate toys for children. Small parts are a choking hazard.

As you open presents, immediately dispose of packing materials like plastic bags and Styrofoam pellets. A child playing with them may suffocate.
