WHAM 2016 – Fit For Life, Life Be In it

On the 9th September Northern Beaches SHS held the annual

Wellbeing Health and More Expo in line with the National R U Ok

Day? Thank you to the large number of outside agencies that made

time to educate students in all areas of health and wellbeing. In

addition to the agencies, UTU classes provided information stalls,

interactive activities, and healthy food options and even raised money

for our Chappie Bree in the process.

Trendy Trev from Cairns motivated the students with original and

entertain motivational presentation, which hopefully students took

away some inspiring ideas to live their best life.

The afternoon closed with two amazing performances by Calla

Mullamphy and Romelita Afamasaga who both captivated their

audience with their floorless and soulful voices.

WHAM 2016 gave staff and students an opportunity to remember to

ask R U ok? And take time to remember to take care of themselves

because they matter. Thank you to everyone involved.

Mr. Stumer and Mrs.

Taylor ‘rockin’ the

LIFE BE IN IT –

80’S theme.

Last Friday saw our annual WHAM festival which was an outstanding success. We place significant

importance on the development of the whole child and building resilience and WHAM is an integral component

of our Student and Wellbeing program. A massive big thank you to our Student Services Team led by

Guidance Officer Mrs Kate Wallace and our U2U teachers and year coordinators who were instrumental in

making the day such a success.

I have spent much of this week reading and reviewing year 12 work to be sent to panel for verification. There

are many, Very High Achievements (VHA) across the board of all subjects which is very pleasing. These

results combined with their performance on the recent Queensland Skills Test (QCS) will calculate their

Overall Position (OP) score.

Our year 12 students must ensure their QTAC applications for university are submitted prior to the holidays.

Late fees apply from October. Our Guidance Officer, Mrs Wallace is available to provide advice and assistance

with applications.

We have begun the consultation process to apply to become an Independent Public School for 2017. If we are

successful it will enable us to continue and improve on the good and innovative work we are doing in each and

every classroom and for us to be able to build stronger connections with industry and university and our

community. At the recent P&C meeting we receive 100% support for our submission. Further information

about Independent Public School can be found on our website.

I wish our students and staff a safe and restful September vacation commencing at the end of this week. School

will resume for Term 4 on Tuesday, 4 October after which a very short five weeks will follow before our Year

12s tackle their final exams. Students in other year levels need to remain focused for the longer term ahead.

Robin Sprott,

Principal

“Ask not for an easy life...ask for the strength to face the elements, to weather the storms; to be the might for

the right and the weak, to be the voice for those who cannot speak, to see one's dreams to fruition with dignity,

integrity, and grace.”

Unique Student Identifier Number (USI) for Senior Phase of Learning (VET)

Northern Beaches State High School recommends that all Year 10, 11 and 12 students apply for their USI number now. The attached student information sheet clearly outlines how parents/caregivers and students can apply for this number online. From 1 January 2015 if you are undertaking nationally recognised training delivered by a registered training organisation you will need to have a Unique Student Identifier (USI). This includes studying at TAFE or with a private training organisation, completing an apprenticeship or skill set, certificate or diploma course.

Year 10 Senior Education and Training Plan (SETP) Interviews Thank you to all Year 10 students and their families who attended the SETP Interviews in August where students carefully selected their Year 11 subjects for 2017. This process went smoothly and all students can now focus on the remainder of Year 10 before they commence their final two years of schooling. Year 10 UTU teachers Mr Burt, Mr Behrendorf, Mrs Whalley, Mrs Annett, Doctor Charmley, Mrs Turner (check spelling and salutation preference) and Ms Doyle were instrumental in guiding this process as an integral part of the students’ Career Development unit. VET in Schools (attending TAFE every Wednesday) expressions of interest are also being finalised as a result of this process.

Your SET plan will help you:

structure your learning in Years 11 and 12 around your abilities, interests and ambitions

think about your education, training and career options after Year 12

set and achieve your learning goals in Years 11 and 12, and beyond

include flexible and coordinated pathway options in your course of senior study

communicate with your parents/carers or teachers/careers counsellors about your post-school plans.

Once your SET Plan is completed, you and the key people involved in developing your plan sign and date the plan to show your agreement.

It is recommended that you review your SET Plan regularly to make sure your subjects and learning are right for you, and that you can maintain a pathway to the courses and career you want after Year 12.

If you would like to make a change to your subjects or courses, it is important that you discuss this with your school. You must have approval from your school before changes are made.

Year 11 and 12 Student Connect Learning Accounts All Year 11 and 12 students are encouraged to activate their learning accounts on the Student Connect website in order to check personal details, check that your learning has been banked and access your final results at the end of Year 12.

MY LEARNING ACCOUNT

All senior students in Queensland have a learning account on the Student Connect website.

Your student learning account is the place where your senior secondary enrolments and results are recorded, as well as when and where you studied.

How do I use my learning account? https://studentconnect.qcaa.qld.edu.au

You can use your learning account to check the following information.

Northern Beaches State High School PO Box 200, Deeragun. Qld 4818, Ph: 4751 7111 Fax: 4751 7100 Email: [email protected]

Personal details

Advise your school or other learning provider as soon as possible if your contact details have changed. Your Senior Education Profile will be sent to the home address in your learning account at the end of Year 12, so it's important this information is correct.

Enrolments and your eligibility for a QCE and OP

Tell your school or other learning provider as soon as possible if any information is missing or incorrect.

Final results, including your QCS Test grade, OP and FPs

Your individual QCS Test grade will be published in your learning account at the end of November. Your final Year 12 results, Overall Position (OP) and Field Positions (FPs) will be available in your learning account at the end of December.

If you are studying a VET course or QCE-recognised course of study, you will be able to see the credits from that course in your account as soon as the course has been completed and your achievement is 'banked' by your learning provider.

If you are studying mostly Authority or Authority-registered subjects, you will not see results in your learning account until the end of Year 12. This is because Queensland's system of school-based assessment does not confirm results until student work is reviewed by external panels to make sure teacher judgments are comparable across Queensland.

How do I log into my learning account?

You need your 10-digit Learner Unique Identifier (LUI) and initial password to log into your learning account at https://studentconnect.qcaa.qld.edu.au

If you don't know your LUI, ask your school.

Your initial password is your day and month of birth in ddmm format.

Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE)

The Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE) is Queensland’s senior school qualification.

Whether you want to:

go to university, TAFE or another further education and training institution

take up an apprenticeship or traineeship

start your career after Year 12

— the QCE gives you the flexibility to tailor your learning to meet your specific abilities and career goals.

The QCE lets you choose your pathway to suit your further education, training or career aspirations. There are many learning options available and hundreds of course combinations that may lead to a QCE.

To achieve a QCE, you need to demonstrate a significant amount of learning, to a set standard and in a set pattern, while fulfilling set literacy and numeracy requirements.

Achievements in different types of learning attract different credit values. Credit is assigned when a minimum standard of achievement has been reached and a set amount of learning has been undertaken. A student must have at least 20 credits in the required pattern to be awarded a QCE. To achieve a QCE you must meet set literacy and numeracy requirements and achieve 20 credits.

At least 12 credits must come from completed Core courses of study. An additional 8 credits can come from a combination of any courses of study, with a maximum of 6 credits from Preparatory courses of study.

Northern Beaches State High School PO Box 200, Deeragun. Qld 4818, Ph: 4751 7111 Fax: 4751 7100 Email: [email protected]

Courses of study

Courses of study approved for the QCE are organised into 4 categories. To receive QCE credits for a course of study you must achieve a Sound, Pass or equivalent.

Core

Core courses of study are usually undertaken by students in Years 11 and 12, such as Authority subjects, Authority-registered subjects, VET certificates and school-based apprenticeships or traineeships. A minimum of 12 credits must come from completed Core courses of study, and at least one of these must come from studies completed at school. Partial completion of a Core course of study may also contribute some credit towards your QCE.

Preparatory

Preparatory courses of study are generally used as stepping stones to further study or training, with different courses contributing varying credit towards a QCE. They include VET Certificate I qualifications and some recognised certificates and awards. A maximum of 6 credits from Preparatory courses can count towards your QCE, however only 2 certificate qualifications can count.

Enrichment

Enrichment courses of study provide you with opportunity to develop your skills and knowledge at a higher level. These courses are generally, although not exclusively, offered by organisations other than those offering Core or Preparatory courses of study. A maximum of 8 credits from Enrichment courses can count towards your QCE.

Advanced

Advanced courses of study go beyond the normal range of typical senior secondary schooling. A maximum of 8 credits from Advanced courses can count towards the QCE. University courses, diplomas and advanced diplomas must be undertaken while you are enrolled at school in order to contribute credit.
