DEBORAH HARTSOCK-SKELTONClass of 1989
While this enshrinee spent only one year at St. Thomas, what a year it was! As a Lady Knight basketball player, she was her team’s Co-MVP in 1989. She is among the state’s leaders in sinking at least nine three-point-ers in a single game and is also among the leaders in most three-point goals in a season and a career. She went on to Muskingum University where she was a member of the NCAA Women’s National Championship runner-up team and was awarded the Anne White Strives For Excellence Award in Athletics which is presented to one female varsity athlete per year. Today, she is a district business manager for a pharmaceutical company in Charleston, WV.We have heard so often how Aquinas is not just a school, but an extended family. I will let her tell you tonight about how the St. Thomas family rallied around her during a time of tragedy. From the Class of 1989, welcome back for enshrinement into the Aquinas athletic Hall of Fame, Deborah Hartsock-Skelton.
Andrea “LA” ThomaClass of 2006
Our next enshrinee was First Team All-County and Stark County’s Player of the Year in girls’ soccer in 2005-06. She was also First Team All-Tri County and the Tri-County Player of the Year, second team All-Ohio and set the Aquinas record for goals in a single game with six. She won STA’s Outstanding Athletic Achievement Award all four years here at St. Thomas. In track, our enshrinee was a regional qualifier in the 4x200, 4x100 and long jump in 2002-03. In the 2004-05 season, she placed eighth in the state in the 4x100 relay and took fourth place in the 4x200 meters. Overall, she would letter three years in track and all four years in soccer. She has fond memories of Coach Bergert nicknaming her ‘The Little One’ during her freshman year and Coach Claugus running down the field with her on his back! Well, ‘The Little One’ now calls California home and she’s standing tall tonight! From the Class of 2006, welcome back to Aquinas for induction into the school’s athletic Hall of Fame, LA Thoma.
Jeff JakmidesClass of 2007
There have been so many outstanding distance runners enshrined into this Hall of Fame, but not everyone is a runner. Our next enshrinee was a two-time state qualifier and still holds the Aquinas record in the discus throw at 157 ft., 3 inches, a record that had stood previously for over 20 years. That throw helped him earn an athletic scholarship to continue throwing at Ashland University. There, he perfected his craft, learning from the great Judd Logan. Eventually, he would turn his passion into a career. After setting many innovational records in the discus, our enshrinee also found time to be a two-time academic All-Ohioan and today coaches the discus throwers at Walsh University. From the Class of 2007, welcome back to Aquinas for enshrinement into the athletic Hall of Fame, Jeff Jakmides.
Matt DoughertyClass of 2010
Our next enshrinee was a three-year letter winner for the Knights in football and four years in track. In football, he was a senior captain in 2009 and won the WHBC Most Valuable Player Award. He was twice named the Athlete of the week by the Canton Repository and the Alli-ance Review in track where he was All-Ohio six times and a seven-time academic All-Ohioan.He won his team’s MVP award in track in 2010 and was a member of the Knights’ 4x800 meter relay state championship team and the second place 4 x 400 meter relay team. In 2009, our enshrinee was a state medalist in three events winning the district and regional championship in the 800 meters, 4 x 800 and 4 x 400 relays. In football, he was a member of the 2009 Aquinas team that defeated Central Catholic that year, 21-7, marking the Knights’ first win over the Crusaders at Sirpilla Stadium. Winning the regional track title in 2010, the state title in the 4 x 800 his senior year and four district track team championships are among his fondest memories. A graduate of Miami University in 2014, welcome back to St. Thomas for induction into the athletic Hall of Fame from the class of 2010, Matt Dougherty.
Brandon JohnstinClass of 2011
This Hall of Fame enshrinee was a four-year varsity soccer goalkeeper and one of the best in his sport ever at Aquinas. He holds a plethora of records, including the most career shutouts in the state with 45 which is also the school record. He also holds the single season shutout record with 14.Our enshrinee was the Defensive Player of the Year in 2008, a Greater Akron Scholastic Soccer First Team All-District choice in 2009 and his team’s Most Valuable Player in 2010. He was first team All-District and First Team All Stark County in 2010 and achieved academic All-Ohio status that same year.He would go on to play two seasons for the Ohio State University club soccer team and competed in the national tournament in Phoenix. It’s my pleasure to introduce for enshrinement into the St. Thomas Aquinas athletic Hall of Fame from the Class of 2011, Brandon Johnstin.
Jory LombardiClass of 2011
Our next enshrinee was a three time All-Ohioan and a three time state qualifier in track in the 4x100, 4x200 and 4x400 events. He was a member of the 4x400 team that broke the state record and whose time of 3:19.81 set a new school record. He was also a member of a 4x200 team that set a new Aquinas standard with their time of 1:30.04. He was a member of the 2010 state runner-up team and the 4x400 relay team that holds the Stark County Meet record. In the classroom, our enshrinee was also a three-time academic All-Ohioan. His coach Angelo Pederzolli had this to say about him: ‘He was the foundation that the program was built on...I have not coached a more deserving person for this honor.’ I would have nothing more to add except to present to you for enshrinement into the St. Thomas Aquinas athletic Hall of Fame from the Class of 2011, Jory Lombardi.
Julia PusateriClass of 2011
We have all read and heard a great deal about the outstanding track and cross country tradition built here at St. Thomas Aquinas. Well, that doesn’t just happen overnight. It takes years, commitment and dedication to build the kind of tradition the Knights have enjoyed across the state of Ohio. Our next enshrinee embodies that winning tradition. In track, she was a four-year letter winner, setting new school records in the 800 meters, 1600 and 3200. She was a six time qualifier for the state track meet, qualifying twice in the 1600 and twice in the 4x800 relay. In 2009, our enshrinee qualified for the state in the 3200 meters and was awarded the top distance award. In 2010, she was her team’s MVP and placed fourth in Ohio in the 1600 meters. And in 2011, she was a state champion in the 1600 event and finished third in the 800 as she led her teammates to a fourth place overall finish. In cross country, she was First Team All-County all four years at St. Thomas, graduated with a school record time in cross, qualified for state three times and was twice named All-Ohio. Her coaches Randy Crawford and Eldon Jones said it best: ‘She was and still is an outstanding athlete who led the current rise in STA cross country and track that brought us to become the best overall program in the state of Ohio.’Presenting to you for enshrinement into the St. Thomas Aquinas athletic Hall of Fame from the Class of 2011, Julia Pusateri.
Tim ClaugusCoach
Our next enshrinee was a four-time Stark County Coach of the Year in soccer, won the Tri-County Soccer League Coach of the Year award three times and was twice named the Greater Akron Scholastic Coach of the Year. He is currently a youth soccer coach at the Louisville YMCA, co-founder of the Louisville Soccer Club and coaching staff and an officer in the Greater Stark County Youth Soccer Association. His coaching record at St. Thomas in girls’ soccer from 1993-2003 and 2005-07 stands at 146 wins, 66 losses and 41 ties. He says he is particularly fond of being inducted this year along with LA Thoma and fellow coach Larry Bergert for the hard work and dedication they made to the success of the girls’ soccer program. At this time, it is my pleasure to present for enshrinement into the St. Thomas Aquinas athletic Hall of Fame, Coach Tim Claugus.
Larry BegertCoach
From time to time, there are those Hall of Fame inductees we enshrine long after their days here at St. Thomas Aquinas. That’s the case with our next enshrinee. He was Stark County and Tri-County assistant Coach of the Year six times, all Northeast Ohio assistant Coach of the Year three times and the state of Ohio assistant coach of the Year in girls’ soccer once.A lifelong resident of Louisville, he is the father of five and has seven grandchildren. He has established numerous lifelong friendships with former athletes and their parents. From the Class of 1972, welcome back to Aquinas for enshrinement into the athletic Hall of Fame, Coach Larry Bergert.
Ron ChesslerSpecial Contributor
Recapping the contributions made by our next enshrinee would take longer than a presidential campaign. What hasn’t this man done to promote and support this school? He has served as a baseball and football coach, a board member, chaired the annual auction, served as the Aquinas Booster Club president, girls’ basketball statistician, ran the clock for boys’ basketball, served as a member of the school’s finance committee, served on the building and grounds committee and was instrumental in the realization of Sirpilla Stadium when it opened in 2005 and was a member of KNAC. He is a graduate not of Aquinas, but of Perry High School in 1975. However, he married a Knight in Diane McDonald and the couple sent two children through Aquinas. He has also been recognized as an outstanding alumnus of Walsh University, a one time Football Hall of Fame committee member, Canton South Rotary president and a volunteer for Habitat For Humanity. It’s my pleasure to add to his resume tonight, and welcome Ron Chessler into the St. Thomas Aquinas athletic Hall of Fame.
Congratulations to All!
