What are cells? Building blocks of living
things Let’s name some living
things: people, plants, animals,
bacteria Cells provide structure,
convert nutrients to energy, and carry out specialized functions.
Your body is made of trillions of cells. Muscle cells help you move, stomach cells help you digest your lunch, and skin cells cover your whole body!

How can stuff get in and out of cells?
Passive Oxygen, carbon dioxide
and water pass through tiny holes in the cell membrane from high concentration to lower concentration
Called diffusion for gases, or osmosis for water
Let’s explore diffusion!

Diffusion through a cell membraneRemember, an egg is a really big single cell!

How can stuff get in and out of cells?
Active Larger molecules
need help to pass through the cell membrane
They can move one molecule at a time, or in bigger chunks
Requires energy

How can cells move?
Some crawl (video 1 video 2) make new attachments at the front release attachments from the back contract cell body to bring cell forward
Let’s explore how cells move by playing with toy water snakes!

How can cells move? Some swim (video 1
video 2) Cilia or flagella on cell
body move back and forth or around like a propeller to produce movement
Can you think of other ways cells might move?

Can you think of things other than cells that move in similar ways?
