FOR?About Maccaferri Gabions: An Overview

THE HISTORY OF GABIONS

The original Gabion patent, as awarded in the late 1890s, belongs to Maccaferri along with the title of the inventor of the modern Gabion.

The modern Gabion that is used today features a double twisted hexagonal steel wired mesh which forms a rectangular box.

UNDERSTANDING THE MESH

The mesh is reinforced with selvedges of wire that is much heavier and runs along each edge as well as by transverse diaphragms.

The wire mesh boxes are flat packed upon delivery and are easily assembled simply by lifting them into position and pouring durable rock into them.

STYLE AND STRUCTURE

The style and structure of the modern Gabion enables it to be used i a myriad of different formats, configurations and applications.

If necessary, they are easily reshaped for different project and site amendable requirements.

WHY ARE THEY SPECIAL?

The double twist woven mesh modern Gabions are particularly useful in the case of differential settlement accommodation as they are unlikely to tear, unzip or unravel despite exposure to heavy loads or wire damage.

This is unlike any other retaining structure and is unique in its capabilities for accommodating differential settlement.

FINISHING THEM UP

The style of Gabions that Maccaferri provides can be offered with a galvanised finish, or alternatively you could opt for an additional polymer protective coating or Galfan coating.

The high performance galvanising process Galfan employs uses zinc, aluminium or mischemetal alloys.

RECOMMENDATIONS AND USE

It is strongly recommended that a polymer coated galvanised unit is used in projects that involve water exposure or a saline environment in order to improve the life span of the design.

Once the Gabions are filled with stones they can be used for structures such as river bank protection works, erosion control works, retaining walls and weirs to create a monolithic, permeable and flexible look.

PRODUCTION AND STRENGTH

The low carbon content wire that is used during the production of the Gabions can be coated either by Galfan’s zinc/aluminium or cerium/lanthanum alloys, or even an additional plastic material coating, all dependant on the intents of use and the possible degree of environmental aggressiveness.

PRODUCTION AND STRENGTH

A further measure can be employed to strengthen the structure with reinforced edges. This would be created using a larger diameter wire than initially used for the mesh box.

Many combinations of wire diameters and mesh are available for Gabions, with a dependence on the mechanical importance of the project, as well as the dimensions, measurements and environmental damage that can be expected from the structure.
