Lesson 1What is a star?

Sun Facts

Our sun is really a star .It has the same characteristics as the other stars we see in the sky, but because it is the closest star to Earth and the Earth revolves around it, it is also called the Sun.

The sun contains different kinds of hot gases that interact in a special way to give off heat,

light and other kinds of energy.

How does a scientist know about the Sun if it is too hot to go there and they can’t touch it to examine it?

Scientists can get closer to it by using telescopes. Scientists can examine what the sun gives off in forms of energy. Scientists develop special tools such as a spectroscope to learn more about the sun.

Words to know

star light year

What is a star?

Page 277

A star is a giant bal of hot glowing gasses that releases ENERGY.

A LIGHT YEAR is the distance light travels in one year.

On page 277, complete 1. Main Idea and Details

1. Main Idea:Light from stars takes time to reach the earth.

Types of stars

Page 276:Stars look like points of light as they are

very far away. Physical characteristics or PROPERTIES of

stars are:Size... Brightness...temperature...color

Scientists use these characteristics to describe stars.

Brightness of stars

Some stars are dim. Some stars are bright. Dim stars can be close to earth but

they seem far away.

Size of stars

Stars can be different sizes. Our sun star is average size. Stars size can change over time.

Temperatures and colours of stars

Stars can have different temperatures and colors.

Stars can be red, orange, yellow, blue and white.

A stars temperature is caused by its color.

Blue stars are hotter than orange stars.

Patterns of stars

Stars form in groups in the sky. They form patterns. The stars that make up the patterns

are very far apart from each other. The patterns the stars make, change

with the seasons. As Earth moves around the sun,

these patterns are in different parts of the sky.
