WHAT DOES THE MIXED BREED ANCESTOR MEAN FOR MY DOG?

We have identified for you the 5 next best breed matches which appeared in the analysis of your dog's DNA. One ormore of these breeds could have contributed to the genetic makeup of the ancestors indicated by the mixed breedicon. The breeds are listed by the relative strength of each result in our analysis with the most likely at the top ofthe list. There could also be a breed or breeds present in the mixed breed component that we cannot detect with ourcurrent database of purebred dogs.

HOW WISDOM PANEL INSIGHTS WORKSThe process started when you sent a sample to our laboratory, where the DNA was extracted from the cells andexamined for the 321 markers that are used in the test. The results for these markers were sent to a computer, that evaluated them using a program designed to consider all of the pedigree trees that are possible in the lastthree generations. The trees considered include a simple pedigree with a single breed (a likely pure-bred dog), twodifferent breeds at the parental level (a first-generation cross), all the way up to a complex tree with eight differentgreat-grandparent breeds allowed.

Our computer used information from over 185 breeds from our breed database to fill these potential pedigrees. For each of the millions of combinations of ancestry trees built and considered, the computer gave each a scorerepresenting how well that selected combination of breeds matched to your dog’s data. The pedigree with the overallbest score is the one which is shown on the ancestry chart. Only breeds that reached our set confidence threshold forreporting are reported in the ancestry chart.

In the mid-to-late nineteenth century when Scottish weavers were forced out of work due to the industrialrevolution, they found their way to northern England in the hope of supporting their families. When they leftfor England they brought their dogs with them. The Yorkshire Terrier that we know today evolved from thisbreed, with many believing that the bloodlines of Paisley and Clydesdale Terriers were also added to the mix.The Yorkshire Terrier was used as a form of vermin control, since the areas where they lived were commonlyinfested. In 1865, the breed was given the official name of the Yorkshire Terrier and was introduced to theUnited States in 1872. Just six years later, in 1878, the Yorkshire Terrier was recognized by the AmericanKennel Club. However, the breed that was recognized in 1878 is completely unlike the Yorkshire terrier oftoday. Selective breeding has reduced the average weight of the breed from thirty pounds to less than tenpounds. Today’s Yorkshire Terriers are now miniature versions of their ancestors.

Yorkshire Terriers are a long haired breed that comes in combinations of Black and or Blue (A steel graycolor) mixed with a tan or more vibrant gold color. A small white chest blaze is also sometimes seen. Thecoat can sometimes be slow to develop color, and it is common to see Yorkshire Terriers clipped for easygrooming.

The Lhasa Apso originated from the areas surrounding the sacred city of Lhasa, the capital of Tibet, around 800BC and recent DNA testing has identified the Lhasa Apso as one of the fourteen most ancient dog breeds inthe world. Also known as the Abso Seng Kye, “Bark Lion Sentinel Dog”, the dog was traditionally kept indoorsas a second line of defense against intruders, where its keen hearing and ability to distinguish strangers fromintimates were put to good use. The breed was raised by the monks that resided in the monasteries in Tibetand it was not uncommon to find these small, precious animals in the company of a monk. The monks believedthat to be in the presence of a Lhasa Apso was to be blessed with good fortune. In the 1920’s, the KennelClub of England recognized the Lhasa Apso as a separate and unique breed. After World War II, several of thedogs were imported from China and, in the early 1930’s, the first American pair of Lhasa Apsos was given toC. Suydam Cutting, by the 13th Dalai Lama. The American Kennel Club officially accepted the Lhasa Apsoas a breed in 1935.

The Lhasa Apso shares a wide range of colors seen in other dog breeds. Although generally solid colored, some dogs may be two colors (particolor), and some have white markings. Brindle and black mask patternsare possible. The coat is generally long, though some Lhasas have this cut in a "puppy clip" style.

DO YOU RECOGNIZE ANY OF THESE LHASA APSO TRAITS IN MIDNIGHT 3?

They can be wary or shy around strangers and mayrequire careful socialization to prevent or reducedefensive aggressive tendencies.
