What can one hope for when a human being lives
with the label of intellectual disability?
Ann-Louise Davidson Ph.D.Casca May 2008
Context
• Deinstitutionalization in the world’s richer nations:
• Dispersed housing schemes: community residential units, group homes, shared living concept.
• Cluster housing schemes: campus-type living arrangements, intentional communities.
• LiveWorkPlay pilot projects: OOOT
The Problem
• Ageing parents,
• Stereotypes;
• Lack of autonomy and mobility.
• Hope is a belief in a positive outcome related to events and circumstances in one's life. Hope implies a certain amount of despair, wanting, wishing, suffering or perseverance — i.e., believing that a better or positive outcome is possible even when there is some evidence to the contrary.
• Labeling theory (or social reaction theory) is concerned with how the self-identity and behavior of an individual is influenced (or created) by how that individual is categorized and described by others in their society.
Hope and Labelling theory
Research Questions
• Which use of ICT can solve problems experienced by intellectually disabled adults during their residential and community integration process?
• To which extent can this group learn from the research process?
Method
• Observe object of research through an anthropological lens;
• Collect data by using the SAS2 (Social Analysis Systems) methods.
Results
• 2 real-life problems emerged:
• How to talk about our intellectual disability?
• How to get paid jobs and keep them?

• Implications for future research:• Engage participants directly in the formulation of
the problem, the analysis and the interpretation of data;
• Empower participants by giving them the control and ownership of information;
• Allow participants to imagine the ideal scenario.
