The Cosmological Argument for the existence of God

St Thomas Aquinas1227-1274

Page 7: What caused Ted to miss his flight to Chicago? Sort the cards. What was the first cause?

The Cosmological Argument

• The Universe and everything in it exists

• Everything that exists in the Universe has been caused

• There had to be a first cause of everything

• God is the first cause of the Universe

Page 8: What caused Ted to miss his flight to Chicago? Sort the cards. What was the first cause?

Write up the argument in your books using the prompts.

Thomas Aquinas on Change and God

• In the cosmos as we experience it, it is obvious to us that some things change. Now whatever changes must be changed by another. And if that other itself change, then that too must be changed by another. But this cannot go on to infinity, because there would be no change going on at all. You eventually have to arrive at something that is Unchanging. This is God.

One explanation of creation is found in the Bible…

Genesis is the first book of the Bible and gives a clear account of God creating the Universe; God is the first cause

Page 11: What caused Ted to miss his flight to Chicago? Sort the cards. What was the first cause?

The Genesis Account

The Genesis story tells of God creating the world in 6 days and resting on the 7th ; humans were planned and important to Him

Stephen Hawking is a Physicist at Cambridge University

• He believes that the Universe was created at one point in time as a massive explosion (the Big Bang)

• As the Universe expanded and cooled, the right conditions arose for life to begin

Page 13: What caused Ted to miss his flight to Chicago? Sort the cards. What was the first cause?

The Big Bang

• This idea suggests that the Universe was caused by natural events

• The Earth and our place on it seems to be a random act of chance

Page 14: What caused Ted to miss his flight to Chicago? Sort the cards. What was the first cause?

Genesis account vs the Big Bang

Does the Big Bang mean that God was not responsible for creation?

Or…Is God the being that cause the Big Bang to happen?

Page 15: What caused Ted to miss his flight to Chicago? Sort the cards. What was the first cause?

The Universe hada beginning

God made the worldin 6 days and

rested on the 7th

God started theUniverse through the

Big Bang

The Universe startedwith a massive

explosion and we arehere by chance

The Bible comesfrom God and is

literally true

The idea of the BigBang is wrong as it

contradicts the Bible

God set up the lawsof nature that govern

our world and itscreation

God acted in theWorld to trigger

The Big Bang; He wasthe first cause

14 billion years agothe right conditions

prevailed forthe Universe to start

Nothing was neededto start this off;

it just happened!

God vs The Big Bang

• Where would a liberal Christian, a fundamentalist Christian, and an atheist fit into these three ideas about God as the first of all causes?

• Which of the three views do you think has the most merit and why?

What are the pros and cons of the

Cosmological Argument?

Pros

ConsThe Universe just is; it

doesn’t need to have been caused

Just because everything we see has a cause, doesn’t mean there has to be an overall reason or plan to the world

There wasn’t necessarily a first cause; the Universe could be eternal

It’s a contradiction to say all things are caused apart from God

The argument is based on experience of the world; all we see does have a cause

Something must have started everything else off; it’s logical

God is the only eternal and unchanging being so must be the first of all causes

It is flexible; it fits with both the Bible

and modern science
