As parents, one of our biggest challenges during the Christmas season is keeping the focus on Jesus. Advent is a valuable tradition that returns our attention to the birth of Christ. This Ad-vent experience will equip you to lead your family through some simple devotionals & create some holiday memories. What Do I need?

Jesus Storybook Bible (preschoolers to 3rd grade) Can be purchased at Faith Promise Resources or ordered on Amazon for less than $15. Bible NIrV Version (elementary to high school) Check out the online version at www.biblegateway.com free of cost. Wreath (artificial or real) & 4 candles Set up wreath on a counter surface or a table top. You can use live or artificial. Set up the 4 candles in the wreath. Be advised that the candles will be lit while sitting in the wreath. Please take appropriate fire safety precautions.

When do I do this?

Choose one night per week in December to complete the activities as a family. Choose a time that works best for your family.

How do I do the activities?

1. Give yourself lots of grace. If you don’t normally do family activities like this then don’t expect it to be perfect. Just enjoy the time with your family.

2. You’ll find a series of “Share/Read/Do/Pray” steps. The “Do” activities are a great way to help your child internalize these topics. Make every attempt to set aside time for the “Do” activities. You’ll have more fun than you expect.

3. “Go Deeper” is the optional material so you can dig deeper in your own personal study. All “Go Deeper” materials comes from the Serendipity Bible.

Advent means "coming". In all the busyness of the Christmas season, it's important that we stop & remember that Christmas is all about the birth of Jesus. For years before Jesus was born God's people, the Israelites, looked forward to the advent (the coming) of Jesus. Over the next few weeks we are looking forward to the advent (the coming) of a special day... Christmas Day. We can get excited about Christmas because of what is under the tree, but the real gift of Christmas is Jesus.

Here are 3 things to remember: 1. Jesus came as the Messiah (the Savior) to save, to forgive & to restore us to Him 2. We look forward to the advent (the coming) of Jesus a second time when Jesus returns to earth for us. 3. We pray for those that don't know Jesus & as that they might know Him through us.

Have you ever waited for something but you really weren't sure what it would look like? Have you hoped for something so much you couldn't wait for it to get here? The Israelites waited for the Messiah, but they really didn't know what He would look like. They didn't know what to expect but they couldn't wait for Him to come. Preschool to 3rd grade : "Get Ready" (Jesus Storybook Bible) 4th grade & older : Malachi 1 & 4

Grab your paper & pen. Tell everyone, "We're going to share some of the great things God has done." Use short phrases to describe something God has done or will do." Give some examples like: "Provides for us", "Created the Earth", Gave me a family", "Show me His love", etc. As everyone shares, record these phrases on your paper. Display your work somewhere where everyone can see it throughout the week as a reminder of all the great things God has done.

God, thank you for all the ways that you love us. Thank you that we can celebrate just as the Israelites celebrated all the wonderful things you have done. Would you prepare our hearts? Would you remind us this week of how you love us. Would you use us this week to show Jesus to others? Amen

Preschool to 3rd grade: "He's Here" (Jesus Storybook bible) ~ 4th grade & older: Luke 1: 26 - 38; 2:1-20 Discuss: Jesus' birth was an answer to a prayer the Israelites prayed for many, many years. But a tiny baby in Bethlehem is not necessarily what they were looking for. Parents, share about a time God met your needs in a way you didn't expect. What did you learn about God and how He works? Trusting God to meet our needs isn't often the challenge. It's recognizing the ways in which he does it. The Israelites were anxiously waiting for the Messiah, but how He came into the world was not what they expected.

A melodrama is overly dramatic, exaggerated acting. Choose parts for everyone in the family. You may have to improvise based upon the number of people in your family. That's what makes this fun.

The narrator reads the story of the birth of Jesus from Luke 1&2:1-20 or "He's Here" (Jesus Storybook Bible). Narrator, as you read the story aloud 'feed' the different lines to the actors. Actors, use your words and your whole body to act out your role. Enjoy, laugh & have fun. As crazy as it might seem your kids will internalize this moment in history helping them to better understand what it might have been like for Mary & Joseph.

There are many options available during this season to show the light of Christ through our actions. Where can you show up like an "army of angels"? Reserve a few hours on your calendar, take the kids & serve as a family. Visit the local nursing home & play games with the residents, sack food at the local food pantry, or serve meals at the homeless shelter. Be an army of angels & take Jesus to the streets!
