What do you do if acomplaint is made
against you?
Your integrity andprofessional status are
under pressure. It can bestressful, even soul
destroying. What do you do?
Thankfully, we have a rangeof expert advice to help you
work through the processcalmly and professionally
1.Don’t have a knee-jerkreaction. Don’t react untilyou have been told exactly
what it is about.
2.Get the details. Theinvestigator should give youfull details of the complaint
made against you.
3.Contact your union.
4.Think back to the event. Youcould request an informal
meeting to talk this throughwith the complainant with theintention of giving an apology.
5.Do not confront.
6.Take evidence. This personmay start to intimidate you.
Take note of the date, time andplace and inform the
investigator as soon as possible.
7.Explain. You should be giventhe opportunity to explain your
version of events, includewitnesses and any material
evidence.
8.Don’t despair, stay positive. Youwill overcome it, learn from it anddevelop strategies so that it can’t
happen again.
9.Be aware of appeals. Thecomplainant can appeal against
the decision and the issue will notbe finalised until the appeal has
been concluded.
