Look at the camera’s in the front…
• How do these work?
![Page 5: What do you see? (don’t tell your partner just yet)](https://reader036.vdocument.in/reader036/viewer/2022062721/56649f265503460f94c3cc83/html5/thumbnails/5.jpg)
Cameras• Light passes through a lens and puts the
image on a piece of film, where it can be permanently seen.
![Page 6: What do you see? (don’t tell your partner just yet)](https://reader036.vdocument.in/reader036/viewer/2022062721/56649f265503460f94c3cc83/html5/thumbnails/6.jpg)
The Eye
• Have you ever wondered how such a simple object can allow us to see everything around us?
![Page 7: What do you see? (don’t tell your partner just yet)](https://reader036.vdocument.in/reader036/viewer/2022062721/56649f265503460f94c3cc83/html5/thumbnails/7.jpg)
How does the eye work?
• The world around us is projected into the eye in the form of visible light.
![Page 8: What do you see? (don’t tell your partner just yet)](https://reader036.vdocument.in/reader036/viewer/2022062721/56649f265503460f94c3cc83/html5/thumbnails/8.jpg)
How does the eye work?
• The image passes through the cornea, which covers the lens.
![Page 9: What do you see? (don’t tell your partner just yet)](https://reader036.vdocument.in/reader036/viewer/2022062721/56649f265503460f94c3cc83/html5/thumbnails/9.jpg)
How does the eye work?
• The image then is projected on the back of the eye, which is called the retina.
![Page 10: What do you see? (don’t tell your partner just yet)](https://reader036.vdocument.in/reader036/viewer/2022062721/56649f265503460f94c3cc83/html5/thumbnails/10.jpg)
What do you notice?
• The image is flipped!
![Page 11: What do you see? (don’t tell your partner just yet)](https://reader036.vdocument.in/reader036/viewer/2022062721/56649f265503460f94c3cc83/html5/thumbnails/11.jpg)
Why?
• What kind of lens is it?
![Page 12: What do you see? (don’t tell your partner just yet)](https://reader036.vdocument.in/reader036/viewer/2022062721/56649f265503460f94c3cc83/html5/thumbnails/12.jpg)
There are two types of lenses
• Concave -the lens bends inward
• Convex -the lens curves out
![Page 13: What do you see? (don’t tell your partner just yet)](https://reader036.vdocument.in/reader036/viewer/2022062721/56649f265503460f94c3cc83/html5/thumbnails/13.jpg)
So which lens is in the eye?
• A convex lens
![Page 14: What do you see? (don’t tell your partner just yet)](https://reader036.vdocument.in/reader036/viewer/2022062721/56649f265503460f94c3cc83/html5/thumbnails/14.jpg)
![Page 15: What do you see? (don’t tell your partner just yet)](https://reader036.vdocument.in/reader036/viewer/2022062721/56649f265503460f94c3cc83/html5/thumbnails/15.jpg)
So….
• This means the image gets flipped as it passes through the lens.
![Page 16: What do you see? (don’t tell your partner just yet)](https://reader036.vdocument.in/reader036/viewer/2022062721/56649f265503460f94c3cc83/html5/thumbnails/16.jpg)
Why is this important?
• When we build and use the pinhole cameras, the photos will pass through a hole that acts as a convex lens.
![Page 17: What do you see? (don’t tell your partner just yet)](https://reader036.vdocument.in/reader036/viewer/2022062721/56649f265503460f94c3cc83/html5/thumbnails/17.jpg)
So what does that mean?
• This means that the photo we get will be upside down.
• We simply flip the image.
• More on that in a few minutes….
![Page 18: What do you see? (don’t tell your partner just yet)](https://reader036.vdocument.in/reader036/viewer/2022062721/56649f265503460f94c3cc83/html5/thumbnails/18.jpg)
But how come our world isn’t upside down?
• Our brain controls our eyes and flips the image!
![Page 19: What do you see? (don’t tell your partner just yet)](https://reader036.vdocument.in/reader036/viewer/2022062721/56649f265503460f94c3cc83/html5/thumbnails/19.jpg)
Is this always the case?
• Actually, it is believed that when a baby is born, it sees the world upside down because its brain is not used to vision yet and has not been trained to flip everything.
![Page 20: What do you see? (don’t tell your partner just yet)](https://reader036.vdocument.in/reader036/viewer/2022062721/56649f265503460f94c3cc83/html5/thumbnails/20.jpg)
How do we know our brain controls everything?
• Check out the these images….
![Page 21: What do you see? (don’t tell your partner just yet)](https://reader036.vdocument.in/reader036/viewer/2022062721/56649f265503460f94c3cc83/html5/thumbnails/21.jpg)
This really isnt moving….
![Page 22: What do you see? (don’t tell your partner just yet)](https://reader036.vdocument.in/reader036/viewer/2022062721/56649f265503460f94c3cc83/html5/thumbnails/22.jpg)
Wait…
• Our brain tries to see something that makes sense. If it doesn’t make sense, our eyes are told to adjust until we see something.
![Page 23: What do you see? (don’t tell your partner just yet)](https://reader036.vdocument.in/reader036/viewer/2022062721/56649f265503460f94c3cc83/html5/thumbnails/23.jpg)
But how do we know?
• A famous study proved this!
![Page 24: What do you see? (don’t tell your partner just yet)](https://reader036.vdocument.in/reader036/viewer/2022062721/56649f265503460f94c3cc83/html5/thumbnails/24.jpg)
More optical illusions
• Stare at the following image for 30 seconds….stare at the plus.
• Do not look away. Do not stare past the image
