What do you think the cake up front represents?
• Africa has many raw materials and natural resources not found in Europe including: – cotton– rubber– ivory– minerals including gold and diamonds
Why Africa?
The Scramble for Africa
Berlin Conference (1884) meetings held in Berlin, Germany European nations attended the
conference. African rulers DID NOT. The European nations partitioned (divided) Africa amongst themselves.
Europeans owned almost ALL of Africa by the end of the conference.
The Berlin Conference
Independence• European countries began to
free their colonies in the 1950s
• By 1960 - 27 free countries• By 1975 - 47 free countries
Problems After Independence Different ethnic and religious
groups wanted to be in control of their new countries
This lead too many long, bloody civil wars throughout Africa
Lack of education also lead to problems because native African leaders were not prepared to run the new countries left in their control
Conflicts still continue today!
