April / May 2014 Price 40p Copy Deadline for the June / July issue - Monday 12 May A long weekend off work? A chance to spend time with family and friends? An excuse to eat too much chocolate? A time to finish off that DIY project which you started last Easter? For followers of Jesus Christ, Easter means so much more than this. It is the greatest celebration of the Christian year and it focuses our minds on the heart of the Christian faith. Easter means that our sins can be forgiven. When the Son of God died on the cross, he was dying in our place and paying for our sin. He suffered what we deserve to suffer. He paid the price that we owe. He received in his body the punishment for our wrongdoing and our rejection of God. God’s Son was treated like a sinner, so that sinners can be treated like God’s sons. And because Jesus has died for us, there is no price left for us to pay. Forgiveness of sin is offered as a free gift to all who turn to Jesus in repentance and faith. The Bible says: “God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God” (2 Corinthians 5v21). Easter means that death has been defeated. By his resurrection from the dead, Jesus Christ has conquered death itself. Jesus has overcome our greatest enemy and made safe our greatest fear. For those who trust in Jesus, death is not an end, but a beginning. It is not a dark doorway to an unknown future, but the pathway to our heavenly home. Even in the valley of the shadow of death, believers will fear no evil, because Jesus is with us and he has power over death. The Bible says: “We believe that Jesus died and rose again, and so we believe that God will bring with Jesus those who have fallen asleep in him” (1 Thessalonians 4v14). Easter means that Jesus is alive. Jesus Christ only died once. After his resurrection, he did not die again. He is alive today at God’s right hand. Jesus lives forever as our representative and advocate before God. Jesus lives forever as our Saviour and Redeemer. Jesus lives forever as our Lord and King. One day, we will all stand before the risen Lord Jesus as our judge. For those who love and follow him, that will be a wonderful day, but for those who reject and ignore him, it will be a dreadful day. The Bible says: “God has set a day when he will judge the world with justice by the man he has appointed. He has given proof of this to everyone by raising him from the dead” (Acts 17v31). In our services of Holy Communion, we often proclaim the simple summary of the Christian faith which says: “Christ has died; Christ is risen; Christ will come again”. Easter teaches us these foundational truths and Easter also reminds us that we are called to be active and devoted followers of the one who died for our sins and then rose from the dead. Copy Deadline for the June / July issue - Monday 12 May

Along weekend off work? A chanceto spend time with family and

friends? An excuse to eat too muchchocolate? A time to finish off thatDIY project which you started lastEaster?

For followers of Jesus Christ, Eastermeans so much more than this. It isthe greatest celebration of theChristian year and it focuses ourminds on the heart of the Christianfaith.

Easter means that our sins canbe forgiven.

When the Son of God died on the cross,he was dying in our place and payingfor our sin. He suffered what wedeserve to suffer. He paid the pricethat we owe. He received in his bodythe punishment for our wrongdoingand our rejection of God. God’s Sonwas treated like a sinner, so thatsinners can be treated like God’s sons. And because Jesus has died for us,there is no price left for us to pay.Forgiveness of sin is offered as a freegift to all who turn to Jesus inrepentance and faith. The Bible says:

“God made him who had no sin tobe sin for us, so that in him wemight become the righteousnessof God”(2 Corinthians 5v21).

Easter means that death hasbeen defeated.

By his resurrection from the dead,Jesus Christ has conquered deathitself. Jesus has overcome ourgreatest enemy and made safe ourgreatest fear. For those who trust inJesus, death is not an end, but abeginning. It is not a dark doorway toan unknown future, but the pathwayto our heavenly home.

Even in the valley of the shadow ofdeath, believers will fear no evil, because Jesus is with us and he haspower over death.

The Bible says: “We believe thatJesus died and rose again, and sowe believe that God will bringwith Jesus those who have fallenasleep in him”(1 Thessalonians 4v14).

Easter means that Jesus is alive.

Jesus Christ only died once. After hisresurrection, he did not die again. Heis alive today at God’s right hand.Jesus lives forever as ourrepresentative and advocate beforeGod. Jesus lives forever as ourSaviour and Redeemer. Jesus livesforever as our Lord and King. Oneday, we will all stand before the risenLord Jesus as our judge. For thosewho love and follow him, that will bea wonderful day, but for those whoreject and ignore him, it will be adreadful day. The Bible says: “Godhas set a day when he will judgethe world with justice by the manhe has appointed. He has givenproof of this to everyone byraising him from the dead” (Acts17v31).

In our services of Holy Communion,we often proclaim the simplesummary of the Christian faith whichsays: “Christ has died; Christ is risen;Christ will come again”. Easterteaches us these foundational truthsand Easter also reminds us that weare called to be active and devotedfollowers of the one who died for oursins and then rose from the dead.

Derek McManus (Advertising Co-ordinator)and I have been working hard since the last

issue, to standardise the advertisements andbring them back to the pre-set regulation sizes. We would like to thank everyone we havecontacted for their co-operation. We hadreceived several enquiries from new advertisersbut we found ourselves short of space. Over time, when space had not been at such a premium, some of the old adverts had “grown” and severalwere taking one and a half “slots” and this waseffectively stopping us accepting new advertsbringing in a potential of £85 p.a. for each largebox.

There were also some adverts where the text wasvery small and difficult to read but, wherepossible ( to save asking for new jpgs ), I haveadded text overlays using a larger font. Somepeople have moved from small to large boxesand we have also started a new size box, whichis effectively two small boxes side by side. Thereis a new price for this size.

DEANERY SYNOD27 February, 2014

The meeting was opened by Simon Friend fromCullompton, who introduced himself as the

new Lay Chair of the Tiverton and CullomptonDeanery, with a brief background of himself. Before the opening prayer, he referred us toPsalm 16 verse 5, “Lord, you have assigned memy portion and my cup; you have made my lotsecure”.

A questionnaire had been circulated to membersasking them, about what they felt that DeanerySynod should be. The main points arising fromthe feedback received were:

* Deanery Synod should be the voice of thelocal churches.

TODAY April / May 2014

* It should be about – learning together, growing together, going together – in otherwords, working together.

* The main aim should be mission, and there isa need to identify priorities and resources.

There then followed a presentation on ‘TheMarriage Course’, a DVD based course aimed, not just at those considering or embarking onmarriage, but also on those already married(and may have been for many years!) and thoseliving together.

The key to the course is hospitality, and is about, amongst other things, building strongfoundations, the art of communication, resolving conflict, the power of forgiveness, theimpact of family and love in action.

Courses have already been run in both theTiverton and Cullompton areas, and further areplanned for the near future. Copies of flyersfrom a previous course, detailing what it is allabout, are available in our churches for thoseinterested.

Despite a fall in the number of couplescommitting to marriage, the evidence points tothe fact that far more children end up in singleparent homes, where their parents are livingtogether, than within a marriage.

Paul IliffCHATter – update from

Churches Housing Action Team

I am making a way in the wilder-ness and streams in the waste-land - Isaiah 43:19

Many of you will be aware that – due toausterity measures - CHAT has lost most

of its statutory funding, and is phasing out theYouth Housing Project. From April we will nolonger receive any Local Authority funding forour Tenancy Support services either. We arevery blessed that we won’t need to close, butwe now need local support more than ever.

Our “Giver of Hope” scheme is a way to givemonthly, helping to ensure the sustainability ofour vital work. We know that CHAT started as a

‘heart’ movement – being moved by local needinto action - and we believe in God’s faithfulessand his heart for the disadvantaged. We wantto expand, not contract, as needs grow everbigger and the safety net grows smaller. Pleaseconsider prayerfully whether giving a smallamount monthly is something that you couldcommit to. Thank you. Find out more [email protected] 01884 255606.Good news storiesNot only do we see God providing for ourorganisation, importantly we see ways beingmade in the wilderness for those we help. ‘G’came to CHAT  last summer following a longspell of homelessness in his home town. Hecontinued to be homeless and was sleepingrough.  CHAT provided him with a tent, beddingand food. We supported him in his search foraffordable accommodation and made theappropriate referrals to other helpful agenciesincluding SHOT (Street Homeless OutreachTeam for Devon & Cornwall). He has recentlyviewed and been offered a 1 bedroom flatand has applied for the Deposit Guaranteescheme.   Once settled, he will be offeredand referred to Tenancy Support toenable him to gain the skills tosuccessfully maintain his tenancy.Sometimes we hardly notice we’ve helped!

‘J’ came to only one drop-in advice session, yethas become an unofficial ambassador for CHATat Tiverton High School (he’s an ex-pupil), as hecredits CHAT’s help with turning his life around.

ANN’S NATURE NOTES

Iread somewhere that the Redshank is calledthe guardian of the marsh, as it is very wary

and, when disturbed, makes quite a racket. Iknow for similar reasons that the Jay is knownas the Guardian of the Woods and I would saythe Oystercatchers could be the guardians ofthe shoreline. So I thought about some of the

old folk lore names of birds and here are a few. There are birds named because of their colour, like the Blue Tit / Blue Bonnet or Blue Spick;Robin / Redbreast or Reddock and theGoldcrest / Marigold Finch. Then there arenames connected with where they live, like theWhitethroat / Nettle Creeper; Linnet / GorseBird and the Meadow Pipit / Moss Cheeper.

Birds are also named after their call, like theYellow Hammer / Little-bit-of-bread-and-no-cheese and the Stonechat / Stoneclick. Othersare named after their nest, the Blackcap /Haybird or Jack Straw and Long-tailed Tit / Jackin a Bottle. Others are called after the patternon their eggs, like The Yellow Hammer /Scribbling Lark. Others by their behaviour, likethe Mistle Thrush / Storm Cock, as it sings fromthe tops of trees in stormy weather or the littleGrebe / Divvy Duck. Others have affectionatenicknames like the Jenny Wren.

Now it is all change in the bird world and theButterflies are flitting in the garden and flowersare starting to shoot. Spring is in the air andsummer is not too far away.

His appointment was announced by the PrimeMinister’s Office. Bishop Robert will becomethe 71st bishop of the Diocese of Exeter whichcomprises more than 500 parishes across thecounty of Devon.

Aged 59, he spent ten years as a Benedictinemonk at Burford Priory in Oxfordshire and thenserved as a parish priest in London beforebecoming Bishop of Stockport in 2008.

He said: “I’m immensely honoured and a littlebit daunted to be chosen as the next Bishop ofExeter. From family holidays, I know Devon tobe a beautiful county, large and full of varietyand I’m looking forward to getting to know itbetter and above all getting to know the peopleof the county”.

“I realise that the picture postcard image manyhave of Devon isn’t the whole truth. There arecommunities facing great hardships, throughpoverty and lack of employment, as well as therecent flooding which has affected manypeople and caused problems for the farmingcommunity. I’ve been moved by the stories I’veheard of churches and individuals across thecounty getting stuck in and helping people.”

He pledged to spend time listening to peopleand explained that his priority will be to leadthe Diocese in prayer, witness and service. Hesaid, “My ten years as a Benedictine monktaught me that all growth is rooted in prayer.God doesn’t want us just to exist or to fritter ourlives away. He wants us to be fully alive and toserve people with joy.” He is passionate aboutthe church’s role in providing education for all,and looks forward to supporting the 130church schools serving families all over Devon.

In his spare time he enjoys gardening andwriting. He is the author of a number of books, including Pilgrim: a course recently launchedby the Church of England to encourage peopleto explore the Christian faith. Bishop Robertwill be installed in Exeter Cathedral in July andwill be living in Exeter.

He succeeds Bishop Michael Langrish, whoretired last year.

At the time of writing these notes, ourchurchyard is a mass of snowdrops

and crocuses, with the daffodilsbeginning to bloom. This is always amuch admired sight and also makes usthink Spring is around the corner!

We send our sympathy to the family ofAnthony Hill who died recently. Ourchurch was full for his funeral servicebefore internment in our churchyard, uniting him with his wife, Valerie.Anthony will be particularlyremembered by us, as he made thewooden cross which is always on thealtar, apart from when services are held, when we use the brass cross.

We also send our sympathy to Gerry andKath Winchester on the death of Kath’ssister, Eileen. Eileen lived in Tivertonbut attended our Church regularly withGerry and Kath before ill healthprevented her from doing this.

Our sympathy is also with Lyn Judd andher family on the death of Ray, whodied in February. Ray was a member ofthe Village Hall Committee for a while. He also did the floral arrangement inone of the windows in our Church forspecial services during the year until illhealth prevailed.

Our thoughts and prayers are with allthese families at this time of theirsadness.
