Diggy Simmons

Birth Name: Daniel Dwayne Simmoms Born: March 21, 1995 Age: 17

It’s been a long time coming for the son of famed rapper, Rev Run from the legendary rap duo, RUN DMC. Signed to Atlantic Records in 2010, he’s pushed out such hits as “Copy, Paste” and “Do It Like You” which have shot up the Hip-Hop charts. He received the ultimate co-signing on April 5th (2010) when XXL Magazine featured him in their Freshman Class edition; an issue dedicated solely to the standout artists believed to take the rap game to another level in 2011 and beyond. The day after his 16th birthday, Simmons took the stage at the XXL Freshman Class concert where Diggy surprised the crowd on screaming fans by bringing out his dad, Rev Run; making history to have two generations of hip-hop, father & son perform on stage together; (the only other notable “father/son performance” to date would be Peter & Cory Gun.

On December 2, 2011, Diggy came to Hartford, Connecticut for one of the biggest concerts that CT has seen to date, Jingle Jam 2011. Diggy set the stage on fire with his performance. Then, he came back out on stage to accompany Mindless Behavior, singing their smash hit “Mrs. Right”. That performance made the crowd go crazy!!! Diggy has also performed in Boston, Massachusetts where he came for the Scream Tour which has included Bow Wow, Trey Songs, & Chris Brown in the past. Diggy was on the BET Awards per-show and he was also in the cipher with his friend, Lil Twist amongst others. Simmons gave back to the inner city youth in Chicago on October 28, 2011 by making a surprise guest appearance at Snoop Dogg's Youth Football League (SYFL) Chicago Benefit Skate party. Diggy arrived to a room full of screaming cheerleaders and fans where he took pictures with the athletes and staff members. Diggy Simmons is doing his thing and he’s definitely our new freshman of the year!

Why Do the Good Die Young?

The Story of Trayvon Martin

On February 26, 2012, Trayvon was walking home from the store when a 28 year old man, named George spotted the 17 year old teen. George Zimmerman was the neighborhood watch captain. He was watching Trayvon walking around and thought he looked suspicious. Zimmerman made a phone call to the Florida police reporting what he thought was someone who didn’t belong in the area He stated that he seen a male acting very suspicious and appeared to be on drugs, but if you listened to the call Zimmerman made to the cops, you can hear him getting out of the car to pursue Trayvon. The police dispatcher asked George if he was following the boy. Zimmerman replied, "Yes". Police clearly told George not to follow him, but he did it anyways. When Zimmerman approached Trayvon, the confrontation escalated which resulted in George shooting and killing him. Many 911 calls by concerned citizens were made to the police station resulting in the incident being recorded. A plea for help was heard as well as gun shots and then silence. When police arrived on the scene they brought George in for questioning; a claim of ‘Self-Defense’ allowed Zimmerman to walk away as a free man that night. Thanks in part to the “Stand Your Ground” law, implemented in the state of Florida. Imagine you asking your brother to go to the store to buy a big iced tea and bag of skittles and never returning home.

Then you find out, that he was racially profiled, shot and killed. The fact is Trayvon was walking in a neighborhood where he belonged. His father stayed there. He had a bag of skittles and an iced tea in his hands as he was walking along. He wore a hoodie because it was raining and he only flipped his hood up because he noticed that someone was following and he was scared. Why do the good die young? As this tragedy began to unfold, I listened to some of the witnesses’ calls to the police and it sounded like Trayvon was yelling in a horrified way; proving that he was indeed scared, and had fought for his life. The Stand Your Ground law would have, could have been in his favor had he survived that night, but not for Zimmerman, the pursuant. Zimmerman accused Trayvon of attacking him, but the tapes revealed a truth that was the exact opposite of what he stated. He stated that he was attacked first and he reacted in (Self-Defense), but cops say Zimmerman didn't have any marks on his face and the mortician that reviewed Trayvon’s body stated that he didn’t have any bruises on his hands that showed signs of force or struggles. So who really attacked first? We’ve heard Zimmerman, but Travyon’s side of the story will never be heard.

Page 9: What Girlz Talk About Magazine

9

Trayvon Martin was an innocent young man in all of this. I watched the parents of Trayvon speak out on their son's death; my heart goes out to that family. I have so many unanswered questions. My questions are why would Zimmerman pursue someone that looked suspicious in his eyes after being told not to do so? And why would he have a gun while approaching this young boy? These are only a few of my questions which remain unanswered... Some people think this is a racist issue and honestly it is. We have an armed Latino, white male and an unarmed black teen boy. We have two parents that will never get to hold their son again or tell him how much they love him; or even say goodbye. We have a police chief that allowed this man to go free and because no one was ever charged with this senseless death, we have communities across the nation in outrage. If you think about it, doesn’t this kind of remind you of the Emmitt till story in a sense? A young black boy being hunted down and murdered…regardless of how it happened, it happened. This case touched many people's hearts around the world and prompted walks, marches and rallies for justice for Trayvon.

As I was writing this, I found out some updated news that Zimmerman was formally charged with the murder of Trayvon and that made my heart some relief, but we all know that this is just the beginning. There is a lot of work to do. George Zimmerman went looking for trouble and he found it. George was trying to be a block cop instead of a block captain. If it were the opposite and a black man had killed a white boy, that black man would have been arrested at the scene and never see the light of day. The truth is Racism still exists, no matter how people try to ignore it, sweep it under the rug or say that black people need to let it go. No one wants to discuss the pink elephant in the room, teens are able to get along with those of different races because we are exposed to different cultures, but if adults cannot get along, how are we supposed to do so? An answer came on March 31st as people of all races, ages, classes and backgrounds came together in unity to say, right is right and fight for justice for Trayvon Martin. It was a beautiful sentiment to see everyone wear the symbolic hoodie and take to the streets of downtown Springfield. On April 12, 2012, after several protests and pleas for justice, George Zimmerman was formally charged with the murder of Trayvon Martin by DA. He went to court and pled, “Not Guilty”. We wait to see if he will be charged with 2nd degree murder of the young Trayvon Martin and will continue to hope that justice will be served. I will keep following up on this case. My heart goes out to that family. I am a young girl, and I wear hoodies, and I can’t help but think the next time I am walking down a street, will I be next? #JusticeforTrayvon!

Relation to Reality:

Teen Girls Respond to What We See on Reality TV. {Bad Girl's Club, Basketball Wives, Love & Hip-Hop, 16 & Pregnant & Teen Mom}

Bullying in our Schools: Relation – Bad Girls Club Everyone knows that bullying has an effect on people. Bullying has been around since the beginning of time...You've either seen it, done it and/or experienced it. In the past few years, bullying has become one of the most controversial issues among adolescence. There are many reasons behind the heightened popularity of it, but is T.V. a factor in all this? As many young people watch reality shows like "Bad Girls Club and Gossip Girls” they seem to aspire to practice the negative behavior they see on TV. As the media portrays these images, young people begin to imitate their behavior resulting in situations where one is either the bully or the victim. For whatever reason, albeit looks, intelligence, jealousy and/or cliques, whatever people don’t understand or relate to, they make fun of and that’s just not cool. I interviewed a few girls to get their opinions on this issue. Let’s call them Keera, Desiree & Stephanie. Lay: Have you ever been bullied? Do you know for what reasons? Keera: Yes I have and yes I do; mostly because I was shy and for the way I talked. I was just misunderstood. Desiree: Yes, I have been bullied. It was all because I was tall (taller than most) and girl's didn't think I was pretty. Stephanie: I was and still am bullied. It has not stopped and I am being bullied every day. Seriously, I was bullied because I’m chubby, I dress very dark and tough, I have piercings, colorful hair and I’m an unconventional girl. Lay: Do you think T.V. shows have any factor in that happening? Desiree: I truly believe reality shows do have a factor in bullying because if adult's are acting a certain way, children and teen's believe they should act the that same way. Keera: Possibly, but at the time I was being bullied reality shows weren’t that popular, but the media was conveying the idea of the "Cool Girl".

Page 11: What Girlz Talk About Magazine

11

Stephanie: Reality T.V. is a factor for sure, because of movies like (Mean Girl's) and programs like Gossip Girl's. Girl's see it glamourized. If Tailor Mohsen & company looks hot being catty, young ladies, why wouldn’t it inspire other girls to try? Lay: I also interview other young people and it is quite clear of their opinions, reality show is truly a factor in bullying.

Is it Real Love or the Celebrity of Love & Relations? Relation – Basketball Wives/Love & Hip Hop It’s definitely not all good in the hood, but TV shows like Love & Hip Hop and Basketball Housewives glamorize unhealthy relationships and make it seem OK to deal with infidelity, mistrust and verbal abuse and they call that love? What are these shows teaching young girls looking for love? To look in all the wrong places. Having money, power and respect is great, but can it bring true happiness, joy & satisfaction? Trust, it’s not all about the benjamins; nothing is more precious than your sanity; know your worth. Ladies, we’re beautiful, we’re precious and we can do it for ourselves and yes, there is someone special out there for you, so don’t sell yourself short for a good time, a Prada bag, an iced out chain and some red bottoms.

Teen Pregnancy: It’s the Reel Deal: Relation – Teen Mom/16 and Pregnant Shows like "Teen Mom" and "16 and pregnant" have helped make teen pregnancy a topic of national conversation for teenagers. However the latest data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention show that the actual rate of teen pregnancies’ in the U.S. has declined to a record lows. In 2009, around 410,000 teenage girl's age of 15 to 19, give birth in the United States. That's a 37 percent decrease from the teen birth rate in 1991. The 61.8 births per every 1.000 females was a teen pregnancy. The rates have now dropped to 39.1 births per 1,000 women. Yet according to the United nations, the rate of teen's pregnancy in the United State is nearly nine times higher than the majority of other developed nations. What makes American girls be more liberal in their dealings with the opposite sex? And Why are they not taking heed to the devastating statics of HIV & AIDS that affect many young people. Is promiscuous behavior something that entices us as we sit and watch all the videos and movies that glorify doing the “nasty”? Seriously, it’s time to have that talk and gear up before entering into uncharted waters.

In a press release attached to new vital signs report, Dr. Thomas R. Friend, the director of the CDC, wrote that "despite the steady reduction in teens pregnancies over the last two decades, still far too many teens are having babies." Preventing teen pregnancy can protect the health and quality of teenager It gives them a chance to be all they can be, travel the world and see what they want to see before taking on the responsibility of another life. Are we really ready to move out on our own, pay a bunch of bills and stay up all night while a little baby cries? Not. Yet, oddly enough, reports look at data from 1991 to 2011 and found that even though there’s been a steady decrease in the rate of teen pregnancies, there's continued to be a high rate of high school students that are having sex. Is it that more teens are finally using contraceptives? Using two forms of contraception for example (Condom's and Birth Control Pills) increased from 5 to 9 percent. Still roughly 1,100 teenage women give birth every day. According to the CDC, that means one of every ten new mothers is a teenager; the majority are Hispanic or African-American.

The Reality of it All So, the question remains, how does these ‘reality type’ shows affect the way teens perceive reality? The answer is up to you. Is it just entertaining or do you really believe what you see on TV? The real deal is these types of shows glorify & glamorize the real life issues teens’ deal with daily, but the people depicted in these shows should be held to a level of responsibility to their devoted fans and faithful audience. On these shows, women and men can sometimes be shown in a negative light, but it’s all in how they respond in the end that really counts. The world wants us to think that this is how it really is, but what happens when all of the lights go off? Girls are talking about it and even wanting to

Page 13: What Girlz Talk About Magazine

13

be like their favorite stars. If they’re going to do what they are being shown, how about creating a show that shows young people getting goals accomplished? Or maybe a ‘Rags to Riches’ story, not just Sweet Sixteen...What about a show that shows how hard it is to raise a truckload of kids, oh wait they have that already. The reality of it all is that we have enough sense to know this is not REALITY. It’s just pure entertainment with some common themes and trends that grab our attention. It’s OK to talk about it, so you won’t be about it. It’s OK to Gossip Girl! Spread the word and let you friends know that it’s not cool to be someone you’re not. Keep it real. Create your own path and maybe one day you can be the reality on TV. But for now, keep being your beautiful self, get your mind right and the rest will follow…Until next time BE the Reality we’d like to one day see on TV. Until then, I’ve learned to just read a good book!!!

Going Crazy Over Mindless Behavior What’s the definition of Mindless & Behavior? Mindless: Having a foolish mind, the opposite of thought; careless or heedless. Behavior: The way a person or thing behaves or acts; conduct or action

Enter in Mindless Behavior…

For those of you who don’t know who M.B. is, I’m here to give you some education so you can get with it! Mindless Behavior is an American boy band best known for their hit singles: “My Girl”, “Mrs. Right” and “Girl's Talk ‘Bout”. The ages of the members range from 13-16 years old. Yes, girls, there’s someone for everyone!!! The band was put together back in 2008 in Los Angeles, CA. Armed with fearless passion for music and performing; they trained, danced and sung for two years preparing for their success. The members of the group are: Prodigy, Ray-Ray, and Roc Royal & Princeton.

Prodigy was named after his ability to quickly master all new thing's relating to dancing and music. Ray-Ray came up under the rank of famed Los Angeles battle dancer, Tommy the Clown. Roc Royal who began rapping at the age of eight years old, also honed his skills in a dance crew. Princeton, well Princeton got his start at the age of four appearing in television commercials for Sketcher’s, McDonald’s, and Nike as well as music videos.

In 2011, the boy's teamed up with Diggy, Ciara, Tyga and Lil Twist to perform on 106 & Park and the BET Awards Pre-Show. Mindless Behavior has toured with many ‘up and coming’ artists. The “Scream Tour” is a big tour that they have been on and man, they had an explosive performance! On December 2, 2011, M.B. came to Connecticut for the biggest concert of the year, Jingle Jam. That show also featured Diggy Simmons, Meek Millz, Wiz Khalifa and Drake. They impressed me once again with their amazing talents. I learned a lot about the each member...I learned that Prodigy is the quiet and focused one, Ray-Ray is the joker, Princeton is the bookworm and Roc Royal loves animals and is the baby of the group.

Who’s Got Next?

Our New Shooting Star

Jacob Latimore is what girls are talking about; with the release of his hot single, “Like Em’, the radio version ft. Issa, has been getting much radio play and has been steady climbing the Pop charts. But, who is this ‘boy wonder’ and where did he emerge from?

Jacob Latimore was born in

Milwaukee, Wisconsin, in 1996, but his sound and style tells of years of experience or is it just a gift? Jacob considers the stage his second home. The young teen with a seasoned voice declares "I love performing...this is what I do because I love it ". His first single featuring Diggy Simmons, “Like Em All” is produced by Infinity and is an up-tempo track in which Jacob and Diggy lets girl's know that we’re beautiful despite our flaws and I can dig that!

"I love performing; this is what I do because I

love it ".

Jacob was surrounded by music since birth, so by the time the singer/dancer turned 9-years old, the Milwaukee native knew he wanted to pursue a career in the music business. Developing a serious discipline for the art of dance, young Jacob studied and emulated the choreography of The Temptations and boy band group B2K. Moving forward with his parents’ full support Jacob teamed with local Milwaukee producers to produce his first song “Best Friend,” which was featured on Radio Disney’s incubator station that profiles young artist around the country.

Page 24: What Girlz Talk About Magazine

24

(Jacob continued)

In order to keep his music career on the fast track, Jacob relocated to Atlanta in 2007; immediately going to work, honing this craft. Jacob’s team set up a premiere showcase to introduce him to the Atlanta music scene, executives and tastemakers. The showcase not only attracted Grammy award winning producer Rodney Jerkins

and R&B singer Lloyd, but introduced him to ATL producers Corna Boys and Rico Love, who produced his viral single “Superstar” that charted on Billboard R&B and Hip Hop Sales Charts.

In 2010, Jacob, with the help of a viral video performance, caught the eye of RCA Records A&R, Wayne Williams. Members of the RCA staff were also left in awe by his charismatic personality and astonishing voice that instantly answered the question of whether the young teen has star power. Jacob was immediately signed to the label and brought along powerhouse managers Larry Rudolph and Jeremy Geffen.

Between recording, dancing, acting and touring, Mr. Latimore is making all the right moves to cover all bases of the entertainment business. Jacob has been

touring, promoting his album. I had the opportunity to see this star in action and he lit up the night at the “Scream” Tour, with his illuminating dance moves and various songs. That night was pure magic! He’s been going out into the community to show mad love to fans…Jacob, along with his friend Diggy Simmons, also stopped by Snoop Dogg's football League in Chicago. He closed his appearance with encouraging words to his peers and agreed to come back to do a benefit concert to help the team Jacob Latimore possesses vocal talent that spans far beyond his years proving that age is nothing but a number when it comes to performing. What does his family say about his success? According to Jacob’s fan page (www.welovejacob.com ), he’s moving forward, with his parents’ full support. Jacob is a very sweet and intelligent young man and I hope he keeps pushing forward with his music career and acting. All the girl's love him and are he’s definitely a star on the rise! Ladies, be on the look out for Jacob Latimore, for he truly is our Shooting Star, ready to fly across our hearts with some of the hottest moves and vocals to date. Be sure to check out his song's, “Like' Em All” and “Nothing on Me” on youtube and various video channels across the world.

From NBA Lockout to the Finals

What it means to the Next Generation of Ballers…

2011 was a crazy year in the world of B-Ball! Many were traded to new teams, Shaq finally retired, Dennis Rodman was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame and the NBA had a serious lock-out!!! Now that the Superbowl is over and Basketball is in full swing after the lockout, many are excited, relieved and anticipating the playoffs and finals. Older franchise teams like the Bulls, Lakers, Celtics & Heat are staying alive and keeping the faith. Younger teams like the Timberwolves and the Saints are getting their game on. Was the lockout a wakeup call for all? During that time, the basketball players couldn’t use their celebrity or the NBA name while out in the

public. That was the NBA Lockout in a nutshell. Here in Springfield, we were directly affected by it when one of the Boston Celtics, Ray Allen came to town to show support and participate in a Home Makeover for a family that lost a loved one to bullying. Carl Walker Jr., took his life in the family’s home after being directly affected by bullying. Ray Allen was so moved by this family that he came down to Springfield to help rebuild their home and participate in the Walk against Bullying. He brought his family along as they all encouraged us to “Stand Together against Bullying”. It was a very proud moment for our City. So, when the show aired on national TV, all of the parts where Ray Allen contributed were cut out! I couldn’t believe it and it was because of the infamous lock out. Now that the lockout is over, and the finals are in full swing, a lot of young ballers had an opportunity to take a look at what can happen in

the game called basketball. It’s not about just having a jumpshot! It can all be ended or prolonged if the deal is not a sweet one. So, stay in school get an education and be well versed in what the details are when signing a contract. You’re very livelihood can very well depend on it.
