research.

EVERY day is a Yakult day.

Yakult was developed in 1935 by the scientist Dr Minoru Shirota. And although our bottle may be

small, we have a big story to tell…

That was then...

The scientist Dr Shirota spent many years investigating microorganisms. In 1930 he succeeded in isolating a unique strain of lactic acid bacteria that was robust enough to survive through the intestines.

He used this strain, now known as Lactobacillus casei Shirota, to make a fermented milk drink – and so, in 1935, the fi rst bottle of Yakult was produced!

This is now:

Fast forward over 80 years, and today over 30 million Yakult products are consumed every day in 33 countries around the world. Yet our core product has changed very little – today’s Yakult still contains the very same Lactobacillus casei Shirota strain that was discoveredby Dr Shirota all those years ago.

Each little bottle contains at least 6.5 billion of these special little bacteria that are scientifi cally proven to reach the gut alive. And that includes Yakult Light, the one with the blue top, which has fewer calories.

Did you know?

Dr Shirota was keen that people all around the world would enjoy his product, which is whyhe used the universal language of Esperantoto name his new drink.

Yakult means ‘yogurt’ although Yakult is really a fermented milk drink, not a yogurt.

What exactly does ‘Lactobacillus casei Shirota’ mean?

The strain name is broken down as follows:

Lactobacillus (genus): Made up of two Latin words: lacto meaning milk, and “bacillus” meaning small rod. Lactobacilli are small rod-shaped bacteria, often found in dairy products.

casei (species): Latin for ‘cheese’, refl ecting the association of this species with fermented dairy products.

Shirota (strain): Named after Yakult’s founder the scientist Dr Shirota.

A science-based company

Science has always been at the core of our product and at the heart of everything we do.

Dr Shirota himself established Japan’s Yakult Central Institute in 1955. Today, scientists at this renowned institute and the company’s European research centre continue to work in the fi elds of research, development and manufacturing of a wide range of products, many of which use Yakult’s unique strain of bacteria.

Science has always been at the core of our product Yakult is the official partner of FINA

The Fédération Internationale de Natation (FINA) is the international governing body of swimming, diving and water polo. Since 2005 Yakult has been an offi cial partner of (FINA) World Championships and the FINA World Swimming Championships.

The Tokyo Yakult Swallows

Since 1970, Yakult has sponsored the Tokyo Yakult Swallows, a professional baseball team that compete in Japan.

Did you know about?

How often should I drink Yakult? We suggest one bottle every day. If you’d like a second bottle that’s fi ne

– however, Yakult isn’t meant to be a thirst-quencher.

Does Yakult contain any colourings? No - Yakult’s colour is natural and due to the process of

caramelisation, which happens naturally when milk is heated. As part of its production process, the milk in Yakult is

heat-treated before it is fermented.

How should Istore Yakult?

Yakult must be refrigerated.Bottles can be kept out of the fridge for a short time (e.g. bringing Yakult

home from the shops).

Does Yakult contain any colourings?

What is the difference betweenthe red and the blue bottles?

Both have the same fl avour and quantity of bacteria. Yakult Light (blue top) contains the sweetener sucralose, so has less sugar and

fewer calories than the original Yakult (red top).

...vegetarians?Yes – it contains fermented skimmed cow’s milk but noother animal products.

...people who are lactose intolerant?Possibly – Yakult contains very little lactose (approximately 1g per bottle), so may be suitable for some lactose-intolerant individuals. If you can tolerate a yogurt, then it’s likely youwould be able to drink a bottle of Yakult.

...pregnant or breastfeeding mothers?Yes – Yakult can be consumed as part of a normal balanced diet.

...people who are intolerant to gluten?Yes – Yakult is gluten-free.

...people taking antibiotics?Yes – antibiotics can disrupt yourgut bacteria.
