After we had made our music video and the ancillary products to go with it we did some research to gain some audience feedback. To get a good sample of the target audience we sent out a survey on SurveyMonkey. They were able to see the music video, the tour poster, the album poster and the album cover. We asked them a few questions about each of the things to gain there opinions. 8 people replied to our survey.

FINDINGS OF THE RESEARCHFrom this research we found that people enjoyed our music video and the majority felt it

represented the indie genre. The special effects we used were also successful as all 8 of the people that filled in the survey said they liked them. It is hard to evaluate these type of results because they don’t provide much information but they show to us that we achieved what we set out to do by producing a music video that fitted the intended genre.

The answers from the survey about the album cover were mixed with only 5 of the 8 saying that they liked it. Without any further opinion it is hard to take anything from this but only 5 of the 8 felt that felt that the album cover follows Alt-J’s conventions very well so this could explain why it wasn’t liked so much.

The tour poster was well appreciated with 7 of 8 saying that it provided all the information they expected and 6 out of 8 said it was very successful in terms of colours, layout and the information that was given. This was positive feedback and didn’t make us want to change anything about it as it was positive.

Half of the people that we surveyed said that the information on the poster would make them want to buy it, this is an okay result as most people would want to hear the music before they bought it so we are happy with the result. We are also happy with the results from the other question as 7 out of 8 people thought that our poster is typical of indie conventions which is good as it will help attract the indie music fans who are also our target audience.

If we could do this research again I would have done an interview of the people that viewed it as this would have provided much more detailed results which would help us to change anything people didn’t like as they could have expressed themselves more and been specific about what they liked and didn’t like.

FEEDBACK FROM OUR MEDIA CLASS

In lesson we had screenings of everybody's music videos and gave each other feedback on what we thought about them. The points that were highlighted in ours were:

• The lyrics match the storyline of the video

• Lots of close ups of the band (typical of the indie/rock genre)

• Use of dramatic melodrama

• Follows Todorov’s theory

• Use of binary opposition

• Breaking 180 degree rule

• Uses stereotypes of masculinity

• A few errors with lighting in opening scenes.

FEEDBACK FROM OUR MEDIA CLASS

From the feedback from our media class we learnt, in more detail, what features people felt stand out and whether it was actually liked by people that are doing something similar so know the different elements of music videos and what convention suits what type of music.

This feedback was useful as it highlighted on or two errors that we hadn't noticed and we then corrected them to make the video more professional and error free. For evaluation of our finished video this was a perfect way of gaining opinions that we could in the evaluation of our video. I would recommend this to other groups if they were looking for ways to gain opinions.

AUDIENCE RESEARCH

The first research and feedback we gained was from interviews of our target audience on what they felt was the most important thing in music videos. This research was very good as we got results from the people that would be watching and using the products that we would be producing. This feedback made our artefacts better by telling us what the audience wanted when they watched music videos, we could then use the answers they gave us and design our digipak to suit this as it would make it more suitable and desirable by the target audience. This method was quite successful although some people were reluctant to take part as they had to be filmed and recorded so we could review the answers at a later date. An interview is a lot better than a survey as qualitative answers are more useful to us than quantitative when looking for opinions on what the target audience want.
