BECOMING A CITIZEN

Two ways to become a citizen Birth Naturalization

To be Naturalized, a person must go through several steps.

You must take a test on US History, US government, be able to read, write, and speak English.

The 14th Amendment defines what a citizen is.

Immigration and naturalization have led to a more “diverse” population.

RIGHTS/FREEDOMS OF CITIZENS As citizens of the US, you are

promised several things. The promises of the government are called your rights.

These rights are laid out in the Constitution(mainly in the Bill of Rights and other amendments).

The 5th amendment promises us due process from the national government.

The 14th Amendment extends due process to the states It tells the states they have to give you

the rights promised in the US Constitution

DUTIES

In exchange for all the rights you have been given by the government, you are expected to complete your duties in return.

Failure to do your duty could mean going to jail.

Duties of Citizens: Obey the laws Pay taxes Serve on a jury if selected Serve in the military if called upon

Citizens also have responsibilities. Responsibilities are not required, they

are voluntary(things you should do). Voting Holding elective office Communicating with the government Participate in politics Stay informed Respect the rights of others
