Life in all its fullness

2020 Vision

Life in all its fullness

That is what our vision tries to put into words. That we would be a school that gives children the start to life, with the values and priorities that will see them live a full and enriching life. That they would make a difference to the people they meet; strive to challenge themselves and one another to be better and kinder; that they would handle all that their future holds with resilience and integrity. That they would live life in all its fullness.

And our values help us to realise this vision...

And our values help us to realise this vision…

(These were voted on by approximately 400 members of our school community from a shortlist of values that best represent our school, selected by the Governing Body.)

These values will be taught and explained this Spring Term and referred to throughout the years ahead.

What have we achieved?● Identified our school vision● Transformed safeguarding practices (including a secure reception area)● Gave children’s behaviour clear boundaries and consequences● Brought a focus on attendance (and improved it to above national and in line

with local levels)● Balanced the budget!● Made changes to staffing to better support teachers, children and parents● Made assemblies more meaningful and central to the school day● Transformed governors’ understanding of their role and how they challenge● Created all sorts of leadership opportunities for children

In 2019, we achieved a lot - both the obvious and many less obvious achievements. Here are some of the key achievements this year:

What else have we achieved...● Transformed the teaching of Computing, PE & Modern Foreign Languages● Supported teachers in making consistent judgements of attainment and

progress● Made the teaching of spelling something that makes a difference● Gave proper time to supporting all teachers with their children’s wider

development through rigorous pupil progress meetings● Much more robust ways of identifying children’s barriers and better

evidence-based interventions to support them

What else have we achieved...

Additional comments from parents attending the two sessions:- The work with Hampton Wick Infants is a huge change this year and makes a

big difference as it is one journey for the families.- Mr Chamberlin agreed that this has seen amazing progress in the past

year and that just this week, the teachers of the two schools got together to begin to build a greater progression within individual subjects so that both schools are working to clear outcomes in all areas at the end of Year 6 and planning each year from nursery upwards to realise these outcomes.

- Communication from school over the past year is so much clearer and more meaningful.

- The class blogs are a great addition to weekly communication- Sports day was much more inclusive last year than previously- The way spellings are taught seems much better- There is a real buzz in HWINS about looking forward to coming to St John’s- The PE, Computing and French lessons (taught by specialists while the class

teacher gets non-contact planning time) are very well thought of by children

Last May, I shared the following three slides with staff - showing what we hoped to do with some of the spaces in our school.

The image above was an initial plan for our new school reception. This is still a work in progress as it is still quite clinical, but it has had the desired impact. It is now a secure space, more appropriate for modern school life.

The images above were shared ahead of our hopes to get funding to redevelop our playground. We are very grateful to the PTA and Hampton Wick United Charity for their donations in enabling us to complete the first phase of this redevelopment. Playtimes are now significantly better structured, safer and much more active!

This remains in the planning stages. The process of transforming our main school library into a nurture room to support children throughout the school day and especially during break times is well underway and will be a wonderful space to support children’s personal development.

The space is currently care and awaiting development, yet at least 10-15 children make use of the quiet space off the playground every day.

Life in all its fullness

2020 Vision2020 Vision (teaching, learning and assessment)

● All teaching staff will know what it looks like to do their jobs brilliantly, are supported to do this and own their development to make it happen

● Marking is manageable, meaningful and impactful● Embed the teaching sequence for writing so that all children make good

progress● All members of the school know the purpose of our curriculum and how each

subject fits into this wider curriculum...and it works!● Maths hub support means our Maths teaching is excellent and all children

excel

1. This year we are focussing on the development of teachers’ practice as they look to continually tweak their teaching methods to best encourage all children to make brilliant progress. It has been amazing seeing how many different strategies the teachers are experimenting with and the impact it is already having on the children.

2. Long, in-depth marking has historically been required by external figures to prove a teacher’s impact on pupil progress. Research does not, however, suggest that this makes as much of a difference as had previously been thought. As such, in line with latest educational research, we have been adapting the way we mark books and support children to make progress in their learning. This remains a focus this year.

3. We are working to better immerse children in a text type so that their final written work is of the highest standard. This means much more reading, drama and interrogation of texts. Our Year 3 children have already found this to make a difference in their recent fairytale story writing. We look forward to seeing how this will enhance children’s written work in the months ahead.

4. We are reviewing our wider curriculum so that it is the best it can be. Do all our Big Picture topics have the desired learning outcomes? Do we build on the children’s previous learning from the year before well enough? We are asking these and many more questions as we look to ensure best practices in all curriculum subjects.

5. We are part of a national ‘Maths hub’ training initiative this year where two of our teachers are being given a year-long development programme that will see our school’s teaching of Mathematics go from strength to strength.

Life in all its fullness

2020 Vision2020 Vision (not teaching, learning and assessment)

● Our school works seamlessly with HWINS, continuing to enhance the perception of both schools in the local area (including our USP)

● Everyone knows our school values and they make a difference across the school

● An expanded Go For Its● All staff, parents and children have appropriate support for their mental

health and wellbeing● Excellent presentation - of classrooms, communal areas, children’s uniform

and children’s books

1. We are proud of how far our relationship with Hampton Wick Infants has come in the past year. We believe it is just the beginning though! We have many plans to keep moving forward in this collaboration so that we can support our children to have the best start to life.

2. We believe our new school values will be crucial in realising our vision as a school. So we have some work to do this year to ensure we know them and understand the difference they will make to our school community.

3. In response to requests from parents, we have been looking at expanding our after school club - Go For Its!. We want to enhance this provision as well as expand its capacity. (It also helps that it is one of the only income generating aspects of our school so a larger capacity will have wider benefits!) We have recently appointed two new after school club assistants to enable this growth.

4. Good mental health and wellbeing of all members of our school community is crucial to the realisation of our school vision. We have worked on a number of initiatives this past year and are continuing to prioritise this work to support children, staff and parents to live life in all its fullness.

5. We want our school to be the best it can be. This includes looking the part. We want to clarify uniform expectations; raise our expectations of the children’s presentation of their work; and see our physical environment continuing to be improved. There is lots planned in this area this year.

Life in all its fullness

2020 VisionMy role as a parent in realising this vision

● Keeping our eyes fixed on what is ahead: Knowing the school is investing in my child’s long term future, the smaller niggly things may feel less niggly…

● Presentation - correct uniform including coats and PE kits● Reinforcing behaviour expectations and consequences● Keeping up key learning at home● Keeping the closest possible watch over my child’s digital life (too many

children are walking blindly into all manner of issues)● Supporting the maintenance fund● Supporting PTA events● Taking part where possible (reading the newsletter, responding to surveys /

requests, coming to events, maybe even donning some gardening gloves!)

1. A note on the first point: This is already a strong part of the culture of St John’s. It is so encouraging that so many parents trust the school and our approach. Where there is this trust, we interact positively and messages are shared and supported; having the best impact on our children. Where school staff and parents seem to work in conflict, children find it much harder to accept consequences or take responsibility for their learning and actions. We must continue to cherish and work on this positive collaboration.

Questions from parents who attended:- Q: What are some of the barriers that might have stopped you from achieving

other goals?- A: The challenges that come from children’s inappropriate or

unsupervised interaction on social media and gaming platforms take a significant amount of senior leader time as any fallouts online show themselves in interactions in school. Financial constraints in education are another key factor in preventing us achieving even more or achieving things even more quickly. Therefore, the work of the PTA is crucial in supporting us in achieving as much as we do.

- Q: What work does the school do to support children in their understanding of online life?

- A: We include digital literacy and online safety within our computing curriculum lessons as well as ad hoc whole class discussions where relevant to a news item or issue that may arise.

Suggestions worth consideration:- A more positive message around the use of digital technology- A review of school lunches- A review of homework practices in the school
