What is a Narrative Editorial Infographic? Explorative – info graphics that encourage the viewer to explore, analyze and arrive at his or her own insights and conclusions at their own speed. The information offered in Explorative Infographics is unbiased; just facts and no opinions. Explorative info graphics are often used in science and research. They have a narrow and specific target market and would not be appealing to the general public. (Explorative Infographic on brain mass vs. body mass by Edward Tufte) Narrative - infographics contain an editorialized message that uses comparative data in the form of imagery (photos or illustrations), data visualizations and text to support a thesis, communicate a predetermined value judgment or tell a story that focuses on one central subject. Narrative infographics have a specified target market, yet can equally appeal to a broad audience because of their highly visual design elements and ability to quickly communicate information to the viewer. Narrative info graphics are often used in publishing. (Narrative Infographic using oil as a metaphor for money to be made in data by Nigel Holmes)

Word Cloud

Word Clouds are a way to visualize text data. The text data is often generated from keyword tags (metadata) on websites, but it can also be used to visualize freeform text. The tags are usually single words, and the importance of each tag is shown through prominence using type hierarchy through typeface, size and color.

Pictograms

Pictograms are a way to visualize data through universal symbols or icons that generate word associations to the object represented. Color, scale and/or hierarchy of the pictogram used to represent the significance of its value in association to the subject at hand.
