Processes and flows

• Processes as core elements in LCA

• A process has inputs and outputs, which are called flows.

• There are different flow types:

» Elementary flows: “material or energy entering the system being studied that has been drawn from the

environment without previous human transformation, or material or energy leaving the system being studied

that is released into the environment without subsequent human transformation” (ISO 14040)

» Non-elementary (or complex) flows: inputs (e.g. electricity, materials, transport) and outputs (e.g. waste,

(by-)products) in a system that need further modelling efforts to be transformed into elementary flows

» Each process needs a reference flow; it reflects the main product of the process

Flow properties and units

• Each flow has a reference flow property.

• Each flow property has a reference unit group.

• Each unit group has a reference unit and other units that are scaled

based on the reference unit.

• Examples:

Flow property Reference unit

group

Reference unit Other units

Mass Units of mass kg t, mg, g, etc.

Net calorific value Units of energy MJ kWh, MWh, kcal, etc.

Radioactivity Units of radioactivity kBq Bq, Ci, Rutherford

6

Datasets types

• Aggregated dataset (LCI result): Complete or partial life cycle of a product system that next to the

elementary flows lists in the input/output list exclusively the product(s) of the process as reference

flow(s), but no other goods or services.

• Partially disaggregated dataset: A dataset with a LCI that contains elementary flows and activity

data, and that only in combination with its complementing supporting datasets yield a complete

aggregated LCI data set.

• Partially disaggregated dataset at level-1: A partially disaggregated dataset at level-1 contains

elementary flows and activity data of one level down in the supply chain, while all complementing

supporting datasets are in their aggregated form (see next slide).

Company-specific vs. secondary datasets

• Company-specific datasets

» Directly measured or collected at a specific facility or set of facilities

» Data shall include all known inputs and outputs for the processes.

» All inputs and outputs need to be scaled to the reference flow of the process.

• Secondary datasets

» Generic data from literature or scientific papers or average data from LCA databases,

industry association reports, government statistics, etc.

» Data sources shall be clearly documented and reported in the EF report.

Page 9: What is an EF compliant dataset? - European Commission

9

Data needs matrix (DNM)

• Data needs matrix (DNM) indicates when to use company-specific or secondary data

• Three cases are distinguished:

1) Situation 1: the process is run by the company

performing the EF study

2) Situation 2: the process is not run by the company

performing the EF study, but the company has

access to (company-)specific information

3) Situation 3: the process is not run by the company

performing the EF study, and the company does

not have access to (company-)specific information

.

Note: Partially disaggregated datasets at level-1 are used exclusively for Situation 2/Option 2.

Page 10: What is an EF compliant dataset? - European Commission

10

Requirements for secondary datasets

1) PEF studies shall use secondary datasets that are EF compliant. If not

available, use (in order of preference):

2) EF-compliant proxy: The use of proxy datasets shall be reported in the limitations section of the EF

report.

3) ILCD entry level (EL) compliant proxy:A maximum of 10% of the total environmental impact may be derived from ILCD-

EL compliant datasets (calculated cumulatively from lowest to largest contribution

to the total EF profile).

4) If none of the above available, process shall be excluded. This shall be clearly stated in the in the limitations section of the EF report as a

data gap and validated by the verifier.

About the ILCD system

• International reference Life Cycle Data (ILCD) system provides guidance and standards for greater consistency

and quality assurance, developed by the Joint Research Centre (JRC) and DG Environment since 2005

• ILCD consists primarily of:

» ILCD Handbook: set of guidance documents for

different aspects of data and study development

» ILCD/EF Reference flows (derived from the ILCD

Nomenclature guidance), ILCD impact assessment

methods and factors

» Life Cycle Data Network (LCDN): website for the

publication of quality assured LCA datasets from

different organizations

» ILCD data format: dataset format used in EF and LCDN

» ILCD DN Entry Level Requirements

» Range of supporting documents and tools

EF compliance

1) Modelling compliance (capital goods, CFF, etc.)

2) Meta data compliance (e.g. DQR, extent of

documentation, etc.)

unit groups, contacts, sources) in ILCD archive structure (zip) and additional

documentation (change logs, XLS package, etc.)

• Two EF reference packages available:

» EF Reference Package 2.0: to be used for all EF studies

using PEFCRs/OEFSRs developed in the pilot phase

21

Data quality

• Data quality as important aspect to evaluate validity of EF studies

• To assess data quality, different data quality requirements are defined:

Used to calculate the data quality rating (DQR)

Page 22: What is an EF compliant dataset? - European Commission

22

Data quality rating (DQR) (I)

• Each data quality criterion to be scored (i.e. TeR, GeR, TiR and P) is rated using a scale from 1 to 5:

• Example for the assessment of company-specific datasets:

Page 23: What is an EF compliant dataset? - European Commission

23

Data quality rating (DQR) (II)

• Based on the rating, the DQR for each dataset shall be calculated with this formula:

• The formula is applicable to company-specific datasets, secondary datasets and EF studies

• Overall data quality rating:

Harmonisation of EF datasets

» The EF transition datasets, that are currently being prepared by external contractors,

will be harmonised in foreground model methodology and will use the same background

data for all energy, transport, packaging and end-of-life (recycling, incineration, landfill)

processes

» The EF transition datasets will be available in aggregated and 1-st level partially

disaggregated type.

» For the partially disaggregated datasets, the European Commission is working on the

finalisation of the extended ILCD (eILCD) format

Page 31: What is an EF compliant dataset? - European Commission

31

User rights

» Datasets are owned by data providers

» Usage in the PEF/OEF framework is funded by the European

Commission

» PEFCRs/OEFSRs from the pilot phase: EF 2.0 package datasets to

be used

» PEFCRs/OEFSRs within the transition phase: EF 3.0 package

datasets to be used

» For any other purposes, the dataset use rights need to be

purchased

33

Look@LCI

» Look@LCI shall be used as a tool to check EF-compliant datasets

» It calculates LCIA results using the .xml files of processes of EF-

compliant LCI datasets and the .xml files of the EF-methods (with

the elementary flows and characterization factors)

» Calculations are run using the “raw” data: no transformation (i.e.

mapping) of the original files in/out of an LCA software is necessary

» The tool, including a guidance document is available at:

https://eplca.jrc.ec.europa.eu/LCDN/developer.xhtml

» EF package to use with the tool is available at:
