“What is and El Camino Conquista?”

Not unlike the “Super Sport” Model, the “Conquista” (Body Ordering Code/RPO:

D91), is strictly an appearance-only

package, and it also cannot be verified by

the VIN.

The Conquista package consisted of a

“striking paint and molding treatment. The

basic body color appears on the roof, and

upper portion of pickup box, lower body

sides, and tailgate. The center section of the

body side, the hood and lower portion of

the tailgate are set off by a special accent

color. Also featured, are bright paint break moldings along the upper side of

pickup box, and tailgate; bright moldings along lower side of body and over wheel

openings. Conquista decal on tailgate.”

The “Conquista” logo decal was located towards the right-hand lower portion of

the tailgate on the ’78 model, and from ’79 & up they were relocated to the right-

hand upper portion of the gate.

For the GMC Caballero version, the same option package was available, but was

labeled as the “Laredo” for ’78 and ’79, and for the ’80 model year, was changed

to the “Amarillo”. It is speculated that this may have been related to the

introduction of the Jeep Laredo trim level for the Cherokee, and likely had

something to do with which manufacturer paid more for rights to the name.

The (D91) package was available with all Powertrain combination options, all

interior option combinations, and did not “require”, or include options such as

the Bumper Impact Strips, Bumper Guards, Bed Cargo Rails or Tie Downs, Bucket

Seats, Center Console, or Sport Gages. Therefore, optioning out an El Camino as a

Conquista did NOT mean it automatically came with the aforementioned options,

a full Gage Package, Air Conditioning, Power Windows and Locks, the Custom

Cloth Split-Bench, as some would assume and it often being perceived as the

“Deluxe Model”. However, these were all options that could indeed be added to

the order, and many were indeed ordered as “fully loaded”.

Essentially, the only option that was included with the Conquista/Laredo/Amarillo

package, were the full-length, lower body and half-fender opening bright

moldings: “Fender and Body Side Moldings” (RPO: BX8). It should be noted that

these moldings could be ordered installed on a Standard model, so the presence

of the moldings alone cannot be a determining factor.

The key components of the (D91) package, were the

following group of parts and paint combinations:

• A Two-Tone Paint scheme with an “Accent Color”

on the body side, the hood and lower portion of

the tailgate. Basic body color appears on the roof,

and upper portion of pickup box, lower body sides, and tailgate

• Paint colors separated by bright paint break moldings along the upper side

of pickup box, and tailgate; bright moldings along lower side of body and

over wheel openings

• “Conquista” Vinyl Graphic Logo on the Tailgate

• “Conquista” nameplate on the Dash above the Glove Box Door

In order to properly identify an actual Conquista model, the primary means of

doing so requires either access to the Original Window Sticker, or the Production

Line Call Sheet (Build Sheet for years prior to mid-’85) -or- the RPO Label from

inside the Glove Box (mid-’85 to ’87), in order to locate and reference the Code

“D915”, which is the RPO Code for the “Conquista/Amarillo” model package.

A secondary option on the years prior to the middle of ’85 (around when they

went away from the Body Identification Plate/Trim Tag) on the Firewall, is to look

for the Trim Code of D91 on the tag, but it may not be listed there.

One last possible, but not completely reliable method that may help, would be to

try to use the Paint Codes on the Body ID Plate, but there would have to be some

remaining signs of the original paint scheme for it to really be effective.

Page 3: What is and El Camino Conquista?”

• A Standard Model, would be one solid color, would have the same Paint

Code shown for the Upper and Lower colors: (73U, 73L). However, the

same rule should apply for the Black/Royal Knight packages, but they were

available only in a limited selection of single exterior and interior color

combinations.

• A Conquista Model (D91), which would be two-tone with the Roof and

Lower Sides below one color, and the Hood and Middle Sides in between a

second color. It would also have the same U (1) & L (2) color codes, but

should have a third color code listed with an “M” suffix for the Middle, or

Center Color: (25U, 31M, 25L).

• A Super Sport Model (Z15), which would be two-tone with the roof, hood,

and sides one color, and the lower body Accent another color. It would also

have the same U & L color codes, but would also have a third color code

listed with an “M” suffix: (25U, 31M, 25L).

It should be noted that the literature specifies that “non-recommended color

combinations not permitted”, so the color combinations shown, should be the

only combinations found.
