The developing definition of art.

TRANSCRIPT

  • 1. If the definition of art

2. has developed over time, 3. and if it is defined as 4. 'a product or process 5. of deliberately arranging symbolic elements 6. in a way that influences and affects 7. the senses, emotions and intellect', 8. and also says that the word art 9. was traditionally used forskill or mastery, 10. but later as an intention 11. to stimulate thoughts and emotions, 12. and if according toDavid Bohm, 13. the original definition was 'to fit', 14. that the word art hascome to mean 15. 'to fit, in an aesthetic and emotional sense', 16. but can also mean 17. 'fitting in a functional sense', 18. then taking those definitions together 19. you get the following ingredients for art: 20. 1. a product or a process 21. 2. skill or mastery 22. 3. fit together in a certain context 23. 4. affect senses, emotions, intellect in others 24. So far this is a definition of art 25. that describes a person to person thing. 26. One person has the skill to produce something 27. (a product or process that fits together in a certain context) 28. that affects another person. 29. But there is also an element of 'fitting', 30. or 'not fitting' in the whole of society. 31. And if art is about changing contexts, 32. going beyond what is known, 33. about seeing a 'new fit', 34. searching for new patterns 35. that are 'fitting in every sense', 36. then apart from the previous4 ingredients 37. in the definition of art, 38. there is a 5th: 39. 5. a search for new patterns that fit in a greater whole 40. Something that goes beyond the individual. 41. A search for a new order 42. in the whole of society or beyond.
