F.A.Q’SWhat is Block Exemption and what does it have to do with oil?• It is a European Commission law that is

designed to stop unfair competition and means that motorists can have their vehicle serviced or repaired in any chosen workshop without invalidating their manufacturer’s warranty.

• Prior to 2003 car owners in the EU risked voiding their vehicle warranty when the vehicles were serviced or repaired in workshops not belonging to the vehicle manufacturer or its dealer network. This barrier was broken in October 2003, when the European Commission (EC) passed a law allowing vehicle owners the freedom of having their servicing and repairs done at their chosen workshop, providing it was undertaken to the same standard as the manufacturer.

• Block Exemption also covers spare parts which means that workshops do not have to use vehicle manufacturer original equipment parts (including lubricants) to ensure a vehicle maintains its warranty. Parts can be sourced from any supplier as long as they are of appropriate or ‘matching quality’.

What is OEM (Original Equipment Manufactured) supplied oil?• OEM refers to something made specifically for

the original product, while aftermarket refers to equipment made by another company that meets the standards set by the manufacturer.

Does the servicing have to be done at the manufacturer’s network to keep the warranty intact? • No, as long as the independent garage

performs the servicing to the same standard as the manufacturer.

I don’t want to invalidate my vehicle’s warranty by using the incorrect oil; do I have to use OEM oil only?• No, as long as the oil meets the manufacturer’s
