What is broadband Multiple broadband technologies Advantages DSL and DSLAM Types of DSL transmission Services through broadband Cable Modem Internet Access through satellite Power line broadband

Broadband refers to high internet access. It allows users to access the internet and internet related services at significantly higher speeds than modems. It provides services more than 256 kbps to several mbps. There are many different technologies both wired and wireless. BSNL’ s broadband working under the brand name “cell one” and MTNL ’s brand name under “triband”.

There are many different types of broadband technologies such as cable, EDSL, power lines, satellite n wireless. Each of these technologies can compete to provide similar services to customers and business.

Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) Cable Modem (CM) Wireless Access WIMAX and WIFI Satellite Access Fiber Technology Power Line Broadband

The connection is always on,which means user can access the internet without the need to dial up internet service provider over a telephone line.

Information can be downloaded into your computer at significantly higher speeds than traditional modems.

Users can go on without tying up their telephone lines.

Business can use broadband networks for videoconferencing and to let employees telecompute.

The data processing capabilities is are digital in nature, meaning that they compress vast amounts of voice, video and data information that are broken down into bits. These bits become words ,pictures on your computer screens. The transmission technologies make high speed internet access possible move these more quickly than traditional modems.

DSL is a wireline transmission technology that brings data and information faster over copper telephone lines already installed in homes and business. A DSL modem access the local telephone company’s central office where a DSL Access Multiplexer (DSLAM )has been installed. The DSLAM transmits the signal from the copper telephone line onto a network backbone.

DSLAM Is the Equipment Located at a Phone Company’s Central Office (CO) That Links Many Customer DSL Connections Over Exiting Copper Telephone Lines to a Single High Speed ATM Line.

Symmetrical Digital Subscriber Line: It is used typically for business applications such as video conferencing.

Asymmetrical Digital Subscriber Line: It is used primarily by residential users who receive a lot of data but do not send much as internet surfers.

ISDN Digital Subscriber Line (IDSL) :It provides symmetrical connection Integrated Services Digital Network and is needed to extend DSL to locations.

BSNL has commissioned broadband, a world class, multi_gigabit, multiprotocol, convergent IP Infrastructure through National Internet Backbone II (NIB_II),that will provide convergent services through the same backbone and broadband access network. Its network consists of core routes at MUMBAI,NEW DELHI,CHENNAI,KOLKATA and BANGALORE in INDIA.

IP.

High speed Internet Access: This is the always-on Internet access service with speed ranging from 256 kbps to 8 Mbps.

Bandwidth on Demand: This will facilitate customer to change bandwidth as per his / her requirement. For example a customer with 256 kbps can change to 1 Mbps during the video Conferencing session.

Multicasting: This is to provide video multicast services for application in distance education, telemedicine etc

Dial VPN Service: This service allows remote users to access their private network securely over the NIB-II infrastructure.

Video and Audio Conferencing: Content based Services: Like Video on Demand, Interactive

Gaming, Live and time shifted TV

It allows a single computer (or network of computers) to connect to the Internet via the cable TV network. The cable modem usually has an Ethernet LAN (Local Area Network) connection to the computer, and is capable of speeds in excess of 5 Mbps.

It is a device that enables cable to provide high speed Internet access using the coaxial cables used for cable TV.

High speed internet access that offers bandwidth or speed among neighbours among the same cable system.Speed is asymmetric and will vary depending on the number of people on the network.

It is targeted towards only residential use.

High speed internet access that uses DSL have a dedicated connection to our home. The performance of DSL services depends on the distance between enduser and phone company central office.

It is targeted towards residential and business uses.

Very Small Aperture Terminals(VSAT) and Direct to home (DTH) services would be encouraged for penetration of broadband and internet services with the added advantage to serve remote and inaccessible areas. Commercial VSAT services providers having ISP licence shall be permitted use of same hub station and remote station to provide internet service directly to the subscribers.

Satellites are used to transmit telephone, television and data signals originated by common carriers(broadcasters and distribution of broadcast ) and TV program material.

The download and upload speed for satellite Internet access depends on various factors including the satellite Internet provider, the consumers line of sight to the orbitting satellite, the service package purchased and the weather.

Power Line Broadband (also known as Power Line Communications) is the delivery of data over the exiting electric power distribution network. It is another way of accessing the Internet, which would allow to surf the web and road their e-mails with speeds much faster than dial up access and comparable to the speeds of DSL and CM.

The present ADSL broadband services provides high quality of service at low price but it has limits of the area of utilization. Other broadband access services provide lot of mobility and large area of utilization but charges are very high and service quality is poor. Hence, present BSNL’ s broadband on copper loop (Data One) is the best compared to any other broadband services.
