What is Diwali 2014?

National festivalsare the lifeblood of a region. They add charmand thrill to our stresslife. India

being a melting -pot of religions, race, and ethnicities, it has a varietyof festivalsand feasts.

Among these, Diwali 2013possibly is the most pan-Indian celebrationcelebrated with excellent

pomp and mirth throughout the length and breadth of the country. Diwali, better known as,

Deepawali among the Indian masses, is a festival of lights.

The actual origin of the festival is not known. Some believe that it is related with the triumph of

Lord Krishna over Nakrasura. Some associate the beginningof the festival to the praiseof goddess

Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth. However, the most prevalent belief is that the festival marks the

win of Lord Rama over Ravana. On today, it is assumed that Rama cameback to Ayodhya later

his win over evilRavana of Lanka who had taken away his wife, Sita. People significantlyrejoiced

Brightness of every hue and colour light up shops and buildings. Thus, there is gaiety, sunniness,

merrymaking and fun almost everywhere. There is joy on every face. On this day everybody put

on their best dresswhich has been purchased well in move forward. People exchange greetings

and share sweets and foods as a mark of friendship and brotherhood.

Diwali is an important day for the traders. It is the beginning of Hindu commercial work schedule.

Many of them begintheir fresh account books on this day, after the puja held in honour of goddess

Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth. Special prayers are offered to goddess Lakshmi for her

blessings on the household and on business.

The celebrationof Diwali instructs us many values of life. More than anything else the

celebrationsymbolises the ultimatewin of good over evil. It teaches us that one day or other the

evil existing in this world would be subdued by goodness and righteousness. Rama's behavior to

parents, Sita's loyalty, Lakshman's unflinching love for his brother, etc., teach us many noble

lessons of life. The celebration is a national festival celebrated by everyone regardless of caste,

creed and race. It therefore, encouragesunity, common brotherhood, and communal tranquility.

Hence, in a world like ours, broken by thinhousehold walls of religious fanaticism and social

disharmony, a celebration like Diwali can bring people together, heal wounds, and can help in

fostering national is intergrated.

Of late, external celebrations of Diwali have taken predominance over its religious content. As
