Keylogger can either be software or hardware device, which is designed to surveillance on users activity by tracing keystrokes.

It is executed by monitoring input of any user and having a log of the keys pressed.

This record of keystrokes may keep as a file n system or can be sent to the host (developer of keylogger).

Usually, it is included in spyware as it keeps log of users activity without users consent.
