What Is “Missions” All About?

What does going on a short-term mission trip look like to you?

Who goes?

What does the Bible say about Missions? Why go?

Where do we go?

When do we go?

How do we get there?

SO, ..... Who? Who goes there? • Curious Christians

• Those who enjoy travel

• Those whose hearts are breaking for another’s loss

• Those whose hearts are burning for the lost

• Those whose hearts are full of love of the Lord and desire that his Kingdom come.

What and Why? What does the Bible say about missions and Why should we participate? The Bible says to go

in order to: ...fulfill the Great Commission of Christ ...fulfill God’s promise to Abraham that

through him all nations of the earth will be blessed

Wherever God touches your heart to go

Whenever an opportunity arises

and you feel the Holy Spirit directing you

to go

How? Using whatever skills, training, and preparation God has given you.

Some areas of identified needs are: • Medical, all areas, including dental, vision, veterinary (in some

areas) • Street children ministries • Construction • Computer technology • Teaching in general, Bible teaching and training, ESL • Disaster response

MTW and MNA are always sending appeals for help with missions home and abroad. Bring the talents, skills, and

training that you have. • http://www.pcanet.org • (you can copy and paste to search) Look under “Get Involved” for available trips and order or download “Short Term Opportunities Catalog

Misconceptions-Frequent questions and comments

• Does it make me look more spiritual to others? Probably, but that wears off when the work starts

• Accumulating “testifying badges” to wear on our team tee shirts? Maybe, but that wears off when you meet another mission team who is doing that and you are indignant that someone would assume you are not “saved”.

• Taking a little “vacation” with church friends? Yeah, but you’ve earned a day of R&R by the end of the week! Do you need an invitation to go? No, but some medical trips require a certain ratio between health professionals and lay people.

• Doesn’t it make more sense to just send money? For some purposes, yes, but it’s not about the money. It’s about being the hands and feet of God to those who are in need, both physically and spiritually

• What about the responsibility of the locals? MTW works with ministries that are already in place to support the local pastor and church. The pastor can then contact local businesses and professionals to help people and improve situations. It is a ministry. Sometimes the people don’t know the churches are there or are reluctant to approach them. It is an outreach ministry-an extension of the church plant.

• There is so much need right here, why don’t we put our money in local needs? We do. Our responsibility does not end there. Some are called to serve here, others, there. We all have plenty of work to do.

• Don’t’ you really just do it to feel good, not feel so guilty about not doing it? Yes, but the experience will change your life. You might never go again, finding your gifts more useful in other types of ministries, or you might go over and over again at the drop of a hat.
