1. Welcome to MyPAL I am Jackie Pool, an Occupational Therapist with 30 years experience in supporting people and families who are living with dementia. As part of my work, I developed the PAL Instrument which is a reliable and valid tool that is used by Nurses, Care Workers and Therapists to understand how to provide practical help to people with dementia When my Mum developed dementia, I realised how little information is available for families to enable them to know how to help. Because of advances in our use of technology, I am delighted to now be able to provide the PAL Instrument in this new MyPAL format for families 2. MyPAL helps people with dementia and other forms of cognitive difficulty to do personal, domestic and leisure activities 3. MyPAL has an easy-to-complete Checklist that automatically works out how to support the person 4. It also adds personal details about the individuals preferences, routines and likes or dislikes 5. The Checklist automatically turns into the MyPAL Guide for supporting the person bathing/showering/washing getting dressed dining engaging with others engaging in leisure activities 6. You can use the MyPAL Guide for self-help but also for telling services how to support the person great if you or your relative is going into Hospital or a Care Home, or receiving care support at home 7. Developed by myself, Jackie Pool, a leading UK specialist in dementia care, the PAL Checklist is a reliable and valid tool that is used around the world in Hospitals, Care Homes and other care settings. 8. THERAPEUTIC INTERVENTIONS FOR PEOPLE WITH DEMENTIA COGNITIVE SYMPTOMS AND MAINTENANCE OF FUNCTIONING 7.2.2 Interventions for promoting independence Activity planning The principles of ADL skill training can be applied across various activities beyond personal care. Identifying the persons strengths and challenges and his or her level of performance can contribute to plans for establishing a wider range of activities. Care providers and the person with dementia should also consider preferences, interests and life histories in order to create meaningful activity plans (Kolanowski et al., 2005; Pool, 2002). The Pool Activity Level Instrument provides guidance on individualising activity plans to maximise a persons performance in individual or group-based activities (Pool, 2002) Page 167 9.
