FABRIC-FIRST APPROACH Fabric-first approach is the best approach to

design a passive house. It means building with very high quality materials, to try and reduce the heat losses from the house.

This approach provides a simple solution because, by making just small changes to the products used and the construction methods, it is possible to achieve better results at little, or no extra building cost.

THERMAL BRIDGES Thermal bridges occur when you have part of the

construction -such as the concrete wall- passing down through the insulation into cold earth below. It is very important to eliminate “thermal bridges” in a passive house, we have to create a break between the inside and the outside, to avoid heat loss from the inside to the outside of the house.

In this picture we can see the points in the house where we can have thermal bridges.

In this picture there is a solution to reduce the thermal bridges against ground through wood fiber materials mixed with concrete.

HEATING AND COOLING SYSTEM

Heating requirements are dramatically reduced in a passive house, thanks to good insulation, good windows, and airtight construction.

Heating system is used only as a back-up, because most of the energy come from natural resources for example the sun, from the people living in the house and the electrical appliances.

Ventilation system is also used for cooling system.

TRADITIONAL HOUSE VS

PASSIVE HOUSE In a passive house all the heat losses are

reduced because it has a good insulation, good windows and it is an airtight costruction.

The heating power required is about 10% of what it is in a normal house.

In this graph we can see that the heat losses in the passive house are very reduced and we have the same gains of a typical house though the heating power required is less.

THE FUNCTIONS OF VENTILATION SYSTEM

To distribute the back-up heating in the house

To take out of the house the damp air To contribute to very good indoor air quality
