Readings for next Sunday, August 27, 2017 Isaiah 22:19-23

Romans 11:33-36 Matthew 16:13-20

From the Pastor’s Desk Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

I mentioned a few weeks ago in a Sunday homily that I have recently begun the habit of daily journaling. It’s a habit that I had been hesitant to take up over the years because I never thought I’d have enough thoughts to make it meaningful. But over the past few weeks, I have found that God has provided plenty of inspiration as I’ve reflected on the circumstances and events of each day. I have found that journaling can be a wonderful way to bring our joys, successes, sorrows and failures before God and process them in a way that is a bit more engaging than just speaking these things in prayer. I was looking back at the first entry the other day, when I laid out my purpose in starting the journal. The first words I wrote were the words of the prophet Jeremiah: “For I know well the plans I have in mind for you, plans for your welfare, not for woe, plans to give you a future full of hope” (Jeremiah 29:11). I have always believed that God has a plan for each of us that He’s working out. Sometimes He does this in ways that make it clear to us the path He has chosen for us. But sometimes His ways can seem very confusing or His path very difficult.

The Gospel today makes you wonder what the Lord’s plan is for someone like the Canaanite woman, who comes to Jesus asking for the healing of her daughter. She had to come to a point of begging Jesus for “just a scrap that falls from the table”. This might be viewed as a humiliating or unnecessary way to ask for God’s grace, but in a way I believe God had a deeper purpose in bringing her to this point. This woman comes from the Canaanite people, who traditionally were known to be very independent. They had settled on the northern coast of present-day Israel about 500 years before the Israelites entered into the Promised Land. And their culture was based largely on the agricultural cycles. They knew hard work. Their livelihood and everything in their daily life depended on their ability to be independent and adaptable.

So it’s not typical for a Canaanite to admit that they can’t do things on their own. But this is exactly what the woman in the Gospel today had to do. She had to recognize that, no matter the efforts and labor she put in, they couldn’t heal her daughter. Only the grace of Jesus could. So she begged for that grace.

But Jesus makes it more difficult than it had to be, doesn’t he? He challenges her faith and prompts her to beg. It wasn’t to humiliate her, but rather to test the sincerity and perseverance of her faith. Jesus recognized that her desire to surrender everything to him was sincere. And that’s the attitude that’s necessary for Jesus to work great marvels in a life.

There’s a lesson here for us. We are trained by our culture to be independent in everything we do—we’re going to provide for our families, take control of our challenges, do it all on our own. We think asking for help is a sign of weakness. But at some point, we come to realize that God calls us to become dependent on Him, to call out to Him in our time of need and surrender to Him all of our need for control of a situation. Sometimes, when it seems Jesus is refusing to listen to our prayers, perhaps he’s doing what he did with the Canaanite woman today. Perhaps he’s challenging our faith in Him and our dependence on Him. Perhaps He wants us to give up the final vestiges of our need for control of our lives, and offer it to Him—let Him take control. The Canaanite woman today learned total surrender of her life to Jesus, and she experienced the reward for her faith. May we be as able to surrender everything to Jesus in like manner, so we too may experience the fullness of what He wants to give us!

God bless, Fr. Chris Shofner [email protected]

Please note that Fr. Shofner will be out of the office August 21-23. During this time, please direct all urgent matters to Fr. Adams.
