WHAT IS IT ?

The Trinity Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (Cert TESOL) is a TESOL or TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) certificate designed for those with little or no experience of teaching English. It equips candidates with the basic skills and knowledge needed to take up a first post as an ESOL teacher. It gives an introduction to the theory and practice of English teaching and an insight into the challenges facing the learner and the role of the teacher.

The Cert TESOL is accepted by the British Council as an initial TESOL or TEFL qualification for teachers in its accredited teaching organisations in the UK and in its own teaching operations overseas. Credits are also awarded towards degree programmes offered by universities in the UK.

The Trinity College London Certificate in TESOL is generally accepted within the worldwide English language teaching community as the leading TEFL qualification available in the world today. The successful completion of this course results in a qualification that is accredited at Level 5 on the UK National Qualifications Framework (the NQF) and is regarded as comparable, in terms of difficulty and assessment standards, to the second year of an undergraduate degree course.

Here’s a brief look…

You develop a greater understanding of the language itself by looking closely at key areas of English Grammar and also the sounds we use in English (Phonology).

You complete three assignments which introduce you to important language teaching issues and areas. Namely….profiling an individual student (Student Profile), experiencing and accounting for what it’s like to be a beginner student of a foreign language(Unknown Language Journal), and a presentation of your analysis of some materials you have used in the classroom (Materials Project)Of course there is no substitute for practice! The central features of the course are the development of teaching skills and lesson planning. To this end you teach classes of students at different language levels and by the end of the course you’ll have a clear idea of what constitutes good classroom practice linked to good lesson preparation.
