    What is Wi-Fi

A local area network that uses high frequency radio

signals to transmit and receive data over distances

of a few hundred feet. This enables people to useinternet wirelessly.

    Wi-Fi Overview

y This is a technology mostly associated with

    Wireless Networks and their technologies

y There are many wireless ready/capable devices

now, some common devices:y Cell phone

    Lap top

    Pcetc.

    Wi-Fi Network Topologies

    AP-based topology (Infrastructure Mode)

    Peer-to-peer topology (Ad-hoc Mode)

    Point-to-multipoint bridge topology

AP-based topology The client communicate through Access Point.

    BSA- coverage provided by anAP.

ESA-It consists of 2 or more BSA.

ESA cell includes 10-15% overlap to allow roaming.

Peer-to-peer topology AP is not required.

Client devices within a cell can

    communicate directly with each

    other.

It is useful for setting up of awireless network quickly and

    easily.

    Point-to-multipoint bridge topology

This is used to connect a LAN in one building to a LANs in otherbuildings even if the buildings are miles apart. These conditions receive

a clear line of sight between buildings. The line-of-sight range varies

based on the type of wireless bridge and antenna used as well as the

    environmental conditions.

    ConnectingtoWi-Fi

Access Point (infrastructure mode) usually an area ofconnection is referred to as a hotspot.

A Peer (ad-hoc mode) usually means connecting to another

wireless device within range of your device.

    What is Wi-Fi Hotspot

A Hotspot is a geographic area that has a readily accessible

    wireless network.

Hotspots are equipped Broadband Internet connection, and oneor more Access Points that allow users to access the Internet on

    wireless.

Hotspots can be setup in any public location that can support an

    Internet connection.

Wi-Fi Security Threats Wireless technology doesnt remove any old

security issues, but introduces new ones

    Eavesdropping

    Man-in-the-middle attacks

    Denial of Service

  • 8/7/2019 What is WiFi

    17/26

    Eavesdropping

Easy to perform, almost impossible to detect

By default, everything is transmitted in clear

    text

Usernames, passwords, content ... No security offered by the transmission medium

Different tools available on the internet

    Network sniffers, protocol analysers . . .

    Password collectors

With the right equipment, its possible to

eavesdrop traffic from few kilometers away

    MITM Attack

    1. Attacker spoofes adisassociate messagefrom the victim

    2. The victim starts to

look for a new accesspoint, and the attackeradvertises his own APon a different channel, using the real APs MAC

    address3. The attacker connects

to the real AP usingvictims MAC address

    Wi-Fi Security

The requirements for Wi-Fi network security can be

broken down into two primary components:

    Authentication

    User Authentication Server Authentication

    Privacy

    20/26

Basic Security Strategiesy Block your Service Set Identifier (SSID) from being

    broadcast.

y Wireless beacon so PCs can easily find the access point.

y Change the default network name in the access point.

y Change the default access point password.

y Center the access point in the middle of the

    building/house.

    Impacton Mass Communication?

It has changed mass communication by making internet

    easily accessible virtually everywhere.

Wi-Fi has also dominated other types of masscommunication such as radio and television.

People can now get Wi-Fi on cell phones, iPods, video

    gaming systems, etc.

    Impact

    on S

    ociet

y Wi-Fi has made things quicker and easier, which iswhat our society craves.

We can communicate more efficiently, from almost

anywhere. Soon wireless internet will be everywhere and there will

be no need for Dial Up, DSL, and other forms of

    internet.

    Wi-Fi can be found

    On many college campuses.

    Dorm rooms

    Lobbies

Advantagesy Freedom You can work from any location that you

    can get a signal.

y Setup Cost No cabling required.

y Flexibility Quick and easy to setup in temp orpermanent space.

y Scaleable Can be expanded with growth.

y Mobile Access Can access the network on themove.

    Limitations Interference

    Degradation in performance

    High power consumption

    Limited range

    Disadvantagesy Speed Slower than cable.

y Range Affected by various medium.

y Travels best through open space.

y Reduced by walls, glass, water, etc

y Security Greater exposure to risks.

    y Unauthorized access.

    y Compromising data.

    y Denial of service.
