What is your nervous system?
YOUR VISUAL SYSTEM
Our eyes tells our brains……
What kind
Where
How much
….about light in the world.
…in the Electromagnetic Spectrum.
Our visual system detects light energy…..
Our eyes are designed to focus light on our retina.
Our retina is in the back of your eye.
…called rods and cones.
In our retina, we have special cells to catch the light…..
•Color•Light
•dark
Inside of the rods and cones is…
…a photopigment.
rhodopsin
The photopigments help to trick us by making you “see” things that are not there!!!
This is called an after-image, and it happens because your cones get “tired”.
“Tired” really means you have broken all your photopigment.
“Cone”
opsin
The rods and cones send the info to the other cells in the retina.
The axons from cells in your retina all gather together….
…to form the optic nerve.
Blind Spot
The info is brought into our brain…
…by a nerve optic nerve – Cranial Nerve 2.
The info is brought to our occipital lobe…
…after making a few stops along the way.
The information is turned around….
…and put together, like a puzzle.
Amount of light
Color of light
Where the light is
Movement of light
Your brain processes information about the light from about 100 million photoreceptors.
Lots of neurons are connected to pass the information along.
All of the connections, within your visual system…
…means that processing takes time.
It takes time even when you know….
…what you are looking for.
There is a lot of info to put together…
…and lots of places for info to change.
Where your attention is focused…..
…changes what you see.
Where your attention is focused…..
…changes what you see.
Where your attention is focused…..
…changes what you see.
Where your attention is focused…..
…changes what you see.
Learning changes what you see.
Learning changes what you see.
Expectation changes what you see.
There are lots of connections, lots of places to change info…..
….and still we see.
Our brain puts together the light puzzle..
