A Celebration of Excellence
2009A Celebration of Excellence
1
This special section of Advanced Materials & Processes is dedicated to the 2009 Fellows of ASMInternational and to the distinguished winners of ASM’s awards. The American Society for Metalsestablished the Fellow of the Society in 1969 to provide recognition to members for their contribu-tions to the materials science and engineering field. To become a Fellow, a member must demon-strate broad and productive achievement in production, manufacturing, management, design, de-
velopment, research, or education. Fellows must currently be ASM members, and must have been a memberfor at least five years.
The first class of ASM Fellows, 200 strong, was installed in 1970 during ceremonies at Metals Park, whichlater became Materials Park. The total number from that day to this has grown to almost 2000 ASM Fellows.
The Fellows are a unique group, not only for their outstanding achievements, but also for their ongoingcontributions to the society. The Board of Trustees solicits their advice to help guide the society, and to sug-gest new technical directions. This guidance enhances the capability of ASM to carry out its mission of pro-viding in-depth materials information to its members in every materials field. They have provided invalu-able advice as ASM has transitioned to the online products that enable information to be updated frequently, making it more useful while reducing costs.
As shown by the list of some of their accomplishments, these outstanding engineers and scientists contribute to the overall success of society in general. They find better and more efficient ways to producematerials and products, enabling more people around the world to participate in technological progress. Themodern world owes a tremendous debt to these materials engineers whose contributions enable modern tech-nology. It is only on rare occasions such as this that they receive the accolades they deserve.

For outstanding contributions tomaterials for energy conversionand storage, and to the understanding of interconnectsand their interfaces with electrodes in SOFCs.
“It’s a great honor to have been elected as a Fellow of ASM International that recognizes not only my personal achievement as a materials scientist , but also the
accomplishment of the teams and the organizations I havebeen fortunately associated with in the past.”
