PUBLISHING COMPANIES There are two different types of publishing companies; institution and independent.

Institution

Institutional publishing companies are large groups that usually publish multiple magazines.

Bauer and Time Ink UK are both institutional companies.

Independent

Volcano Publishing is a small, independent company that publishes magazines such as shindig.

Bauer is one of the largest publishers in Europe. It originated in Hamburg, Germany in 1875. It manages over 600 magazines, 400 digital products and 50 radio and TV stations around the

world, including Kerrang!, Q and Mojo. Bauer refers to the 'brands' it has, this is because many of its publications are on multiple forms of media. Kerrang!, for example, is a magazine,

a radio channel and a music channel.

Time Ink UK, formally the 'international publishing corporation (IPC)'  is a magazine and digital

publisher in the UK, selling over 320 million copies each year. NME and Uncut are just two of the magazines that are published by Time Ink UK.

VolcanoPublishing

Volcano Publishing is an independent company. It publishes magazines such as ‘Shindig’, ‘Reverberate’ and ‘Artrocker.’

Shindig

Shindig is a magazine that is independently publish by Volcano Publishing.  Shindig, much like Kaleidoscope, is a magazine that

focuses on a niche audience. Shindig focus on 60's/70's music, as well as art, fashion, film and architecture.   82% of Shindig's

readers are in the ABC1 category, 83% of these are male while the remaining 17% are women.  Worldwide it achieves a circulation of

26,000.

WHERE WOULD I PUBLISH MY MAGAZINE?

Most magazines are sold in supermarkets such as ‘Tesco’ and Sainsbury’. I will sell my magazine in supermarket because these are known locations to

purchase magazines therefore making ‘resonance’ more easily accessible. WHSmith is also a well known distributer of magazines therefore I will also sell

my magazine here to increase my magazine exposure.

As well as this, by selling in supermarkets I can ensure that I target a wide range of people rather than just one specific group. For example, if I were to sell in a

sport shop I would limit myself to a smaller audience.

Additionally, due to my target audience of 16 - 20 year olds, selling my magazine in supermarkets will ensure sales; this is because parents are likely to purchase the magazine for my target audience who may be unemployed due to

their age.

WHAT KIND OF MEDIA INSTITUTION MIGHT PUBLISH MY MAGAZINE?

My magazine will be published by Bauer, an institutional publishing company. This is because I target a mass audience. Since my magazine is of a charts based genre, my magazine would be more suited to institutions. By publishing with a large company

my magazine will be able to be accessibly to a large range of people; this is important as my magazine music genre will change along with the trends and consequently will

attract a large group of aspirers.

I chose Bauer, in particular, to publish my magazine as it currently publishes ‘Q’, a magazine that also focuses on popular culture music and targets a similar audience to

my own.

If I was to publish with an independent company such as Volcano Publishing I would not efficiently target 16 to 20 year olds who follow the trends. This is because,

typically, independent publishers target niche audiences; for example, Shindig targets a niche audience, particularly the ’50 quid bloke’ who enjoys 60’s and 70’s music.

By publishing with a institution I also ensure a larger circulation, whereas if I was to publish with an independent publisher I would be unlikely to achieve a world wide

circulation of above 30,000.
